During the Covid-19 pandemic, many people have stopped shaking hands and opted for other greetings like the elbow bump or foot tap. In this video, CBC columnist Uytae Lee asks why we ever shook hands - a social norm now turned faux-pas - in the first place.

As a person with a public health background, I find it so weird that the politicians in the beginning of this video are reacting strongly to shaking hands while standing within a meter of each other and talking towards each other.

Its an honor thing, not a medical thing. shaking hands (from my background) is a sign that you will respect and treat the other person "the way you want to be treated" I wouldn't want to be infected with a virus, neither would you. The handshakes respect each other enough to show their mutual trust in their choices.. Or I'm an idiot and trust people too much... Nowadays... When I shake someone's hand... Especially with the world the way it is, is a SINCERE form of trust. If you shake someone's hand it is akin to marrying them. Do right by them, it is the only way.

Good information. I've always been good at handshaking but hated doing it. I hope this pandemic puts an end to it or at least gives me a reason not to reciprocate. I worked in the health field for many years and handwashing was always a big part of my day. I also know how careless people are with sanitary practices and rarely wash their hands especially after using the toilet. Look at the infection rate in the US (and more in Canada every day) because people don't follow the simple steps of using a mask, keeping hands away from their face, distance, and handwashing. Obviously, this pandemic will not be our last or our worst challenge.

This is an amazing series! One non-essential great things covid has given me and many people is a personal bubble. Strangers are no longer violating my personal space in public and its done wonders for my anxiety.
