I explored around Matsudo Station in this video. We go into a pachinko/slots center, a claw machine center, inside Matsudo Station, discover some really good mugwort mochi, try some Calpis Jelly drink, discover Raiden Shrine, and miscalculate the distance to Kita-Matsudo Station.

This is fun to watch! The shops are so dense. Every time you look at a building, there are shops on every level. Maybe u you can explore them more, like go into the smaller buildings to see what shops/restaurants are in there and the kind of variety they have :)

@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 лет назад
Yeah, Matsudo-shi is kind of spread out. Like there is more to Matsudo than just this little area around Matsudo Station. hehe I like it a lot here. It's a residential place, like little suburbia, and the pace of life is much more relaxed than inner Tokyo. Thanks for watching!

Man, all those elevated crosswalks. Being able to cross the street without fearing for my life
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 лет назад
Well, in Japan you don't really need to worry at the crosswalks because people actually follow the traffic laws and lights here. Everyone yields for pedestrians, etc. I love it. Now compared to Vietnam, where I was living before Japan, it's completely opposite. You fear for your life DAILY there when walking around, you never know who is going to plow into you because many cars and motorcycles don't follow any traffic laws.

I went into one of those panchinco places recently. They are not very pleasant places, I don’t know how people can sit in there for hours!😂
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 лет назад
It's super loud... like ridiculously loud, which isn't good for your hearing. I bet many of the regular customers are in bad health because of inhaling secondhand smoke and being in a 120+ decibel environment for hours definitely will cause hearing loss. It's a gambling addiction for many people. I remember in the news back in the 80s and 90s when parents would be arrested because they left their child or baby in a hot car to go play pachinko. Sometimes the child even died. So sad.
@elizabeth5193
@elizabeth5193 5 лет назад
I don't understand how it can be so peaceful and quiet in Japan, and then you walk into a Pachinko Place and the decibel level is so horrendous.
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 лет назад
I was looking at the people in there and seeing if anyone was wearing earplugs. Nobody was! I'm not sure what the allure is of sitting in a room full of cigarette smoke and over 120dB level of constant noise. Working there can't be good for the employee's health. Anyway, the chance to win big money with the slots or pachinko is, of course, the big draw for people. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video, Cory. The highlights, I would say, are the mochi, snowflake flower, creepy flickering light on the shrine, and that glorious sunset. Sunsets are always awesome wherever, but Japan sunsets are definitely something else. It's freaking huge! No wonder it's prominent in the flag. Land of the Rising Sun indeed! Cheers!

The sunsets are fantastic here. There was a good one this evening, it just happened about 30 minutes ago. I'll have to try and capture more of them on video, and maybe even some sun rises. My apartment faces the east, so I get the sun rise at 5:00-something in the morning. I need new curtains to block out the light so early in the morning! Thanks for watching!

@@CoryMay81, that would be lovely. I tried to capture the sunset before I left Japan but my phone sucks at dim lighting. I bet the sunrises are epic too, but I'm too much of a night owl to wake up early to appreciate it. Looking forward to the next sunset/sunrise walking tour. Cheers!

Hi Corey - So impressed with how clean and modern and seemingly crime free that little Japanese town is. Where is it in relation to the big city of Tokyo?
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 лет назад
Crime does happen, even in Japan, but the levels are much much lower than other countries by a huge margin. Matsudo is maybe 11 miles northeast of Tokyo. Something like that. I'm not that far from Tokyo and I can see much of the city and Mt. Fuji from my apartment building (not my actual unit, but from the hallway balcony area that is open).
@better2bkind

Cory, the streets look like you could sit down and have a picnic on them. Where are the homeless? Do you have a homeless population/problem in Japan? In America, as of late, there are beggars on every other corner. The homeless problem is out of control. Are there any "bad" neighborhoods there? Looks like such a safe environment. Thank you for another great tour!!
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 лет назад
There are quite a number of homeless people in Japan, for sure. But you don't see them begging or anything as you do in America, for example, Washington DC where the homeless are everywhere in the city, on every block. There is a homeless neighborhood here in Tokyo, several documentaries were made about the citizens who have lived there for years. I've seen just a handful of homeless guys since I've moved back to Japan, mostly around train stations, or sleeping in underpass pedestrian areas, etc. There are some "seedy" environments in Tokyo, such as Kabukicho area in Shinjuku. It's very famous for nightlight, but there are shady peeps there soliciting sex, drugs, and other forms of entertainment. Drunken fights happen, once in a blue moon people get jumped/robbed, but all of that is super tame compared to America. I used to live in DC and Baltimore, and there's just no comparison. In America, you get murdered. In Japan, you don't. Guns are illegal here. Anyway, there's a lot more to this topic for me to say, but I'll save it for another time. Japan is one of the safest countries in the world. ^^

Another great walking video . Such a contrast with Vietnam ( I was in Hanoi a few months ago ) It was very noisy there and crowded ( I stayed in the old quarter near Hoan Kiem lake ) I guess you can say that Hanoi had lotsa humanity in there ;-) , but here it seems so dead compared to it . I like the shrine but everything else ( as far as architecture is concerned ) is just a buncha concrete boxes . You seem to enjoy being there … maybe after Vietnam you were looking for a quieter place . I had always wanted to visit Vietnam … and watching your vids when you were there , gave me a push … and I went and loved it ! Thank you Cory ! Not sure about Japan , but I'll keep watching … keep up the good work ! ;-).

Good work in a new style (sort of) in a surprizingly (to me) quiet spot - which I thought would be a noisy and 'bustling' place. I never knew anywhere near a a big city in Japan could be almost silent. Anyhow, welcome home and keep up the excellent videos..

Another wonderful video! You do such a good job of noticing interesting details to focus on while you’re filming and it makes your videos so engaging. I’ve gotten the feeling, in yours and others videos, that it might be hard to become acquainted with local people in Japan. I’d be curious to hear if you think that is accurate.
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 лет назад
Thanks Swansox! I've gotten this feedback from several people as well. There are some amazing 4K walking video channels out there that do a superb job of showing Japan in very high definition. But they don't talk or explain anything about the culture, or little details. I wish to upgrade my camera and stabilizer one day so I can film walking videos in crisp 4K the way those other channels do, but also keep my narration and exploration vibe along the way. ^^ In the Tokyo area, people are most conservative and keep to themselves. People from other regions, like Kansai or elsewhere, consider Tokyo people as kind of "cold." The Tokyo area is HUGE with over 35 million people, the largest metropolitan area in the world. People here have learned to just mind their own business and keep to their own personal bubble and get on with their daily lives. Not 100% of people do this, of course, but a huge % do. I hope this makes sense. lol Thanks for commenting and supporting my videos!

There are definitely homeless people, but not like in America. I've seen a few beggars and homeless people since I've moved back to Japan. There are never stray dogs, but tons of stray cats. All dogs are house pets, and I've seen so many people walking their dogs every day. But I've never seen a dog off leash just roaming around the streets. Some towns do have community gardens, for sure. I came upon a HUGE one the other day, I hope to capture it in a walking video soon. ^^

The onions left at the shrine were possibly left as a taunt. In some Buddhist teachings it's thought that onions and spices should be avoided before meditation as it's considered a stimulant. Some also believe root vegetables shouldn't be harvested as it's disturbing a living creature under the soil. But more than likely they were just left as a gift to the caretaker of the shrine as opposed to anything sinister.

Matsudo station seems to be an interesting place for some nice train-spotting. That spot where you climbed the stairs crossing the other side of the tracks. And that blob of red bean stuff where you bought the green mochi? Was that a mochi too? It looked like whole red beans lumped up...I’ve never seen that before. Surely it wasn’t available in 7-11 or Lawson because if they were, I should’ve gotten one along with the mochi or strawberry daifuku...yum 🧐🧐🧐
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 лет назад
Yeah, I think anywhere in Japan where there are train tracks, you're bound to find some good spots to just watch trains pass by. My brother and I used to put coins on the tracks as kids and wait for the local trains to pass over them. Train culture in Japan is HUGE. Yes, it was mugwort mochi filled with red bean. Mochi/daifuku filled with red bean is the most common filling of mochi. Surprising you never saw that before. You can easily find it in any convenience store or supermarket. But I love little shops like this where it is handmade on site and usually the quality and freshness are much better, and you get a good amount too!
@MikeBARNUEVO
@MikeBARNUEVO 5 лет назад
That is true! The mochi made in Nara was so delicious although if I needed to get my quick mochi fix, then anything within the 7-11 racks would do the job! Have you also noticed how the sweet potatoes there in Japan are sooo friggin’ delicious? That’s the next best thing that drives me crazy. I encountered them first time in Dotonbori when the sweet potatoes were sliced like fries and wrapped in sugar all around. ¥300 for 150 grams! I got the 300 grams because the smaller serving isn’t enough 😂. And then recently we discovered this dried fruit slices in Tsukiji market. We were like “oh my God Japanese people won’t really stop surprising us with gastronomic delights!” So we’ll be in Tokyo again soon for the nth time 😂😂😂...

Love the walk! I don't know if the suburbs around Tokyo are like most around the world - basically new areas that have built up around the city or just Japan being Japan and replacing vintage houses with new? Like the vintage look you showed early in your video of the restaurant, I like the old style homes built 1950 and back. I know Kyoto has several homes being saved, remodeled, keeping the original style. Are there any vintage neighborhoods in your area? If you find any I would really enjoy seeing that! Thanks for sharing.
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 лет назад
Tokyo has a long history, most of the city area and all the surrounding areas which are now developed, like Matsudo, were all wooden houses. Tokyo suffered some major fires after earthquakes and U.S. carpet bombing in WWII, which destroyed soooo much of the city. I think like most cities, as they grow bigger and bigger, everything spreads out. And of course, older things get knocked down and developments take over to build high rises and what not. But interestingly enough, there are a ton of older Japanese homes around, still in perfect condition. I'll have to look into if there are any fully vintage-style villages close to Matsudo. You never know! It is right next to Edogawa (Edo river), which was extremely important for the trade of goods in the old days and helped grow Tokyo. There's gotta be some old villages still intact somewhere!

Hey Cory, I noticed that when you pay for a meal you have to put the coins in a tray so they don't touch the money while handling food is it like that everywhere or only where food is concerned?
@CoryMay81
@CoryMay81 5 лет назад
It's everywhere. Grocery stores, convenience stores, restaurants, clothing shops, etc. You can just hand your money over but it's the norm to place the money in the tray, let them sort it out, and then when they give the change back, they count the bills in front of you so you know you're getting the correct amount. They hand that over, then they hand over the coins and receipt. It's a funny process to witness, but it's just how they do it here. I want to capture this on video a few times somehow so viewers can see how it's done.

Some places, especially if it is guarded and has CCTVs, you pay a small fee. But there are some free parking too. I think it just depends on what you want or are willing to live with. And just like finding your car in a giant shopping mall parking lot, you just remember where you left it. Bikes are anywhere from $100 ~ $3000+ depending on what kind you want. I just purchased a nice little folding commuter bike with 20" wheels online for about $100. I'm still waiting for the delivery company to process the shipping fee and then tell me when it will arrive. I'm hoping 3 business days at the most! There are slots with the "easy" button. hehehe Or you can individually choose which ones you want to trigger. Thanks for watching!

Hmmm... that is a good suggestion. 1 hour out, 1 hour back? I'll think about it. The problem I've noticed about making multiple-part videos like this is that usually people only watch the 1st video and only 50% or less continue on to watch the 2nd, and if there's a 3rd part, even less % continue on. A good example is my Tokyo Vlogs from 2016. The first video has a huge number of views, the 2nd one is only half that, and so on and so forth. I'll try it out and see how it goes. Thanks Calum!

More walking videos coming soon! Thank you so much for watching. It might be possible, but you'd have to have a tight budget for sure. I pay 60,000 Yen per month for rent. But I also have utilities on top of that (roughly 5,000 Yen). You have to factor in costs for groceries, eating out, transportation like riding trains or buses, and additional expenses like just going out to have fun. I'd say it is possible, once you get past the initial setup fees for everything.

About Japanese people aren’t friendly to stranger on the city. Country people are more friendly. Is because people are force together in small places, so out of respect you give other their small space or privacy. I do the same. I not the type hello hello to stranger.i do nod my head if people look at you to get your attention. But it the same way as I hate it when stranger try to talk story as you know it’s going to be a long while. That in the city. If someone need help asking that another story. It's clean because of both. Japanese people are super respectful and there are also strict laws on littering/recycling. But in other regions of Japan, they're more open to just spark a random conversation on the train or elsewhere. Thanks for watching, Mike!
