It was Dale Dye's first advisor role, now he is the best in the business. The sand pit was not on a Marine base, it was an old quarry in Simi Valley. The original "Invaders From Mars" was one of my favorite films as a kid, so I was curious to see the remake. However, I do remember being disappointed by the sand pit scenes. The original sand pit (with that creepy music) was so iconic in my mind. The remake tried something new with the "moving hole", but I found it to be more silly than scary. That being said, your review does make me want to give the remake another viewing. It's been decades, so I'm sure it will be fun to revisit. You always put together great exploring videos. Oh boy, this movie. The frog eating, the father munching down on the artificial sweetener, the needle in the neck and the ending really got me when I saw it in the beginning of the 90s, I believe, it was the first time I've seen, that a dream fake-out is not a fake-out at all. What, however, really scarred me, is that I caught it later on German daytime TV and the end of the movie was when the ship exploded. They just superimposed "The End" over it. No credits, no nothing. It took years until I got a hold of a copy and could confirm, that I did not imagine the ending that stuck with me for such a long time.

This being the film that featured graphic, slow impaling by telescoping wall spikes, someone being squashed to death by a stone door, multiple stabbings, sword wounds and horrific mutations, as well as the pronounced sexual threat of a bestial union between the female lead and a monstrous reptilian giant. I forget, but wasn't there scenes from this movie that was cut out to avoid an R-rating? I have heard rumors (before the old IMDB message boards got shut down), where there was a scene during the ending sequence, where we could actually see the parents being eaten by those martians (instead of the current ending where David screams after entering their bedroom, implying they got eaten)
@nettack

You haven't watched the video to the end before commenting, I see? The scene was intended, but scheduling errors had the FX team wrap up early.
@DrQuagmire1
@DrQuagmire1 3 года назад
@@nettack yeah, not to mention, I was beginning to fall asleep after pulling off a long shift at work. so with that said, the scene of the parents being eaten (if filmed as intended) definitely would've been pretty damn brutal. and you could make a strong case, that because it cuts to the scene of David screaming, it's only implied that he sees his parents being devoured (making the "less is more" argument just)

I saw this at the cinema my cousin worked at when I was about 4 or 5 years old. It was more surreal than scary. I rewatched it about ten years ago and it still holds up as a good movie. Even the original was pretty good. I never forgot that frog eating scene though, after all these decades.

I remember seeing this on home video. Definitely didn't know what to make of it at the time being a kid. But now more than ever, I've slowly realized the parallels of the cold war mentality versus having "enemies among us." The movie is very applicable today. Especially as we get close to the November election in the US. Is some foreign intelligence invading our society? Will they take over? And how old IS GoodBadFlicks REALLY? 😂 Thanks for all your work. Since I joined this channel, you've hit on so many movies from my childhood. Great to see they're appreciated by other people.

Had the same feeling with another scene, knew I saw it in a movie somewhere but couldn't remember for the life of me as it was damn near 2 decades ago. Finally asked on Brandon's Cult Movie Reviews channel, someone told me it was a movie called Deadly Friend 1986. That movie gave me nightmares particularly because of the final scene. Anyway, a few scenes had stuck in my head as a kid but I couldn't find what movie it was until a month ago. And the thing that's strange is that as known as the movie is I've never seen someone who talks about older movies ever do a review on it (like GoodBadFlicks, Brandon's Cult Movie Reviews, etc.). Literally like a thorn in your brain when you get that feeling and can't put your finger on it.

I don't care how much that movie scared you when you first saw it, imagine being 7 and thinking you're watching a documentary. Anyway, Invaders from Mars is still a movie that I recommend to my friends today. It's amazing!

@@TheRealMacCabbe Ha, I love my mother to death but I was a kid in the 80's and I swear my parents were trying to see how bad they could mess me up. They never censored what I watched as a kid because they felt that movies were fake and as long as I knew that it would be fine. We watched Children of the Corn when I was 5, then just a few weeks later went on vacation to Iowa where my grandparent own a 160 acre corn farm. The first time I flew on a plane was when I was 6 and we had just watched the Twilight Zone movie that has the story of the gremlin on the wing. It rained our entire flight and I had the window seat. My mom also made me a Freddy Krueger glove to wear to school for Halloween, when I was in the 2nd grade. My childhood was nuts but I loved that I could watch all the movies that my friends couldn't.

I honestly have mixed feelings about this film. When I was younger I *LOVED* it. But when I saw it again early this summer as an adult, it's not quite as good as I remembered. Especially the twist ending which I forgot about. Also forgot it was supposed to be a kids movie. I don't hate it, it just doesn't hold up to me as an adult as it did as a kid. Unlike other kid friendly horror like *"The Gate"* .

I remember watching this movie on cable TV as a kid, maybe middle school age, with my cousins and we freakin Loved It!! We watched it so many times!! And you are right about how scary stuff could be and still be PG! The truth is that a lot of PG "kids" movies of the 80s and early 90s were NOT really for kids. I now know why as a child I slept most of the time deep under my blankets with a light on! But man were the 80s movies great in their creepy insistence on revealing kids deepest nightmare fuel - I'm talking about you The Witches, Monster Squad, and Little Monsters! Also I had forgotten how weird and wonderfully bizarre Invaders From Mars was. How scary and campy and unsettling it felt. It totally deserves a renaissance, a big re-release on some streaming platform that will introduce a new generation to how good practical effects can be in what i will call 'High School Horror' movies. I say high school because no way my 7yr old sees any of these before she is 14! Also, thank you for making so much consistently amazing, thought provoking content!

You didn't mention that the blocking and framing are absolutely superb; every now and again, it just blew me away... The editing also is on point, especially compared with modern movies. It also convinces me that although clearly coached strenuously, Tobe was the sole director of Poltergeist (yeah, I know the theories and anecdotes, but especially cross reference with Life force, and it's plain to see in my opinion... Not that it matters much).
