WATCH EPISODE 3: bit.ly/21Tv17t
In i-D’s latest video series, tattoo artist and activist Grace Neutral explores how younger generations are challenging traditional views around beauty and body image across the world. Through a number of dramatic body modifications, Grace has evolved from self-confessed alternative weirdo to actual pixie dream-girl with purple eyes, pointed elf ears, a forked-tongue, scarification and no belly button. Interested in ideas of alternative beauty and pushing boundaries of positive body image, the 27-year-old navigates us through changing attitudes to how we look. In the first four episodes of Beyond Beauty, we follow the tattoo-covered alien princess to South Korea as she investigates the ways in which Seoul’s youth conform and challenge mainstream beauty ideals. Although it’s socially acceptable for teenagers to have cosmetic surgery within its six billion dollar domestic beauty industry, it is illegal to be a tattoo artist. From underground tattoo studios to specialist club nights, Grace meets the young South Koreans embracing alternative ideas of beauty and discovers the impact it has on their lives.

While this video does bring up some good points about Korea's tattoo culture, they don't address one of the big reasons why Koreans, especially the older generation, look down upon tattoos. Back when Japan was occupying Korea, they forcibly tattooed Koreans. Tattoos became a dark reminder of the time when Japan tried to commit cultural genocide against Korea. Many of the women who were forcibly tattooed weren't able to get married and have children, even if they wanted to. For a lot of the older generation, tattoos weren't something you chose to get. It was something forcibly given to you, and therefore was a symbol of one of the darkest times in Korean history. While I am glad that the younger generation is becoming more open to alternative forms of beauty, keep this in mind before you start vilifying the older generation for hating tattoos. For their parents and grandparents, tattoos are a symbol of the occupation of Korea, instead of being an art form.

And in addition to that, there's also saying in Korean where they say a person should not take their body for granted and use it so carelessly as well.

I agree. The young people tend to forget that the older people were also young as well and experienced different things than themselves.

Favilla Morty "Has no value" in your opinion. I doubt they would expect someone like yourself to understand. It doesn't matter if they can see the difference between a tattoo that was forced and one that was gotten willingly...the point here is that tattoos remind them of a dark time in their history and are also associated with gang members in South Korea. Instead of being a selfish millennial, try having some empathy.

That's a story I haven't heard before. I heard of tattoos being used to punish criminals way back in the Goryeo era, which was also a practice in other areas of the Sinosphere. It's also interesting to note that Japanese society also has a strong stigma against tattoos, and currently probably stronger than it is in Korea (tattoos were illegal during the imperial period for example). In any case, opinions are shifting so quickly that I would guess it won't be an issue by the mid-2020s in Korea, given how quickly the tattoo trend exploded in a few years

Sungazer Many criminal organisations and gangs get tattoos and the members tend to end up with a certain look to them. If you get that type of tattoo you will look like a criminal. If you got traditional maori tattoos, you wouldn't complain if you were associated with maori, no ?

Why are so many people here salty as shit? In my opinion she looks better without all the tattoos, but who gives a shit? It's her body, not yours. It's like if you painted your room and then your neighbor came in and started telling you how much of a piece of shit you are because you made your room look ugly. It's your room, as long as you think it looks good that's all that matters.

This is an awesome video but I gotta say it is rather exaggerated. Just this morning on the subway in Seoul I saw two men with full sleeves and a girl with a nice thigh piece. No one stared or batted an eye. Tattoos are getting SUPER common here and not just for the “rebellious” bunch. Girls get flowers and cute little dainty pieces here all the time and tons of guys have them. I have two visible ones and I’ve never heard any negative comments. Especially in the Hongdae area tattoos are EVERYWHERE and not a big deal. Other than that, great video!

As a Korean, I agree that there are too many prejudices and hatred against tattoos in Korea. Ironically, however, Koreans who dare to get tattoos on their bodies despite such social disadvantages are usually idiot. This is what I learned during my 30 years in Korea.
@eugene188
@eugene188 8 лет назад
What this video fails to get at is that in East Asian countries often it was criminals who would have tattoos. In ancient times in China a convicted criminal would get a face tattoo. This happened for a LONG time. So it is part of the culture for people to avoid/dislike people with tattoos, because they were usually criminals. Without getting at the history, your video just makes it seems like old people are ignorant and angry. But there is actually a deeper cultural story behind it.
@christopherjoonlee4558
@christopherjoonlee4558 8 лет назад
Exactly my point. It's just a cultural difference that has not yet adapted to that of the western world. Tattoos are far more rare in Korea as it is a trend that has recently began to reach the general population and therefore is not as socially accepted as it is in the western culture. Thinks about face tattoos in America, 10 years ago you would have been labeled as a criminal or someone with "bad intentions", today you see rappers and other celebrities rocking it without a problem. Korea just hasn't had the time to reach that point where tattoos are of the norm.
@jellibelli
@jellibelli 8 лет назад
+eugene188 I agree. Japan is like that too since tattoos are still strongly associated with Yakuza. of course there's going to be some negative connotations, so older generations' critical opinion is not totally unfounded or just them being really conservative

+Lin Se-Ah 린세아 Yeah, that's pretty weird. people want tattoos, because it looks good on their bodies, or they just want to show one symbol to others, wich was important in their lives. But whats the point of making these if nobody find these cool in your country. For example I could make a pierced hole in my lower lip and insert wooden disks there, because its very common in some african tribe, but I would be the stupid, not the people who dont like it, because I live in Europe, not in the fucking jungle.
@SoryWearsPrada
@SoryWearsPrada 8 лет назад
+FMMAGE well, tattoos and body mods are not for others. They're in your body because that's what you like, your country or other people have nothing to do with it. Also, Africa is not the jungle, but ok. You get a tattoo because it means something to you or just because you really like it, you don't get a tattoo to be cool and shit, that's just being a poser.
@FMMAGE
@FMMAGE 8 лет назад
there are jungles in africa (you know, the continent) :) actually there are jungles everywhere near the equator. And people do want tattoos because it looks good. Its like so obvious. This guy's image, that he wears tattoos everywhere in a country where noone likes it, is just an escape from his probably already fucked up life. You know, Sory, in this world everyone is just posing to everyone. Even you, and EVEN me. Everyone can say: ye i wear this chain, because it means i was problematic blahblahblahbullshit. I like tattos too, it looks dope and shit, but atleast i dont judge people who doesnt think the same way.

She seems like a nice person who is traveling around the world making videos on things she is passionate about. Yet for some reason people feel the need to focus only on her appearance . I am a whitebread, polo shirt wearing, tattooless yuppie and I approve/appreciate of her individuality and personal expression. Of course, my approval really is irrelevant. People should be judged on the strength of their character. They definitely should not be judged by people who criticize another s appearance, yet hide behind avatars that are not pics of their own faces.

@yebboshwamuel 8 лет назад
+Brad M A big portion of this video is discussion people being uncomfortable with others "modifying" their appearance, and it would be dishonest to say that some of the tattoos/scars that the woman in the video has aren't strange. It's totally reasonable for people to voice their opinions on her appearance given the context of the video.
@bradm6287
@bradm6287 8 лет назад
Stereotypical Mexican Ludicolo Who said they aren't strange? They are strange, very different and something I personally wouldn't do to myself but that is my personal preference for myself. Strange isn't a bad thing. The difference here is that I recognize that as a person she should be able to express her appearance as she chooses and shouldn't be ridiculed or judged by immature people falling victim to their own prejudice. That is the point of the video. The point of the video is to display a subculture that is being discriminated against, not to justify the negative behavior of the bigots.
@yebboshwamuel
@yebboshwamuel 8 лет назад
Brad M Tattooing is becoming a pretty big thing in western culture, but more extreme things like the scarification on her forehead are still very new. When things are strange and new people aren't comfortable with them, and especially on a place like the Internet where there's likely to be no real repercussions for their actions, people are likely to voice their opinions. I think that's totally reasonable, especially when the subject of the video is tattoos/body modifications and the comments are about the person's tattoos/body modifications. There aren't many people who are being bigoted, though. From what I see in the comments, the people who don't like something about her body modifications are still being fairly kind about it saying things like "All of her tattoos are great, but I don't really like the scar on her forehead."

Deo Durant Tattooing itself is not illegal, it’s illegal for it to be done by someone without a doctor’s license, which is ridiculous, so most tattoo artist earn their livings illegally, which makes it that tattoos have a bad reputation if you will. Plus it has a history of being used to mark criminals, which only adds on to that stigma.

Jun but it also has history around the world as tattoos represent from what family or tribe you belong to with the Polynesians and the Native Americans it’s cultural if many things in Korea are adapted and inspired by the US they should also realized that Tattooing in many parts of the world is cultural traditions.

I don't get why everyone is so butthurt about having body mods. It's her canvas to paint on, not anyone else's, so I don't see the problem. I personally think her tattoos and eyes are cool but I don't like her teeth, but she didn't do this for me and it doesn't affect me. She did it for herself and that was her choice to make, not mine or anyone else's. I am fucking tired of seeing people act like their lives are at stake just because someone is doing something to THEIR own body that doesn't affect anyone else at all. What's the point in living if you're just going to worry about what other people are doing. Worry about yourself and the people that affect you. Don't worry about people that you will probably never meet and don't try to tell someone to live like you want them to live. You're supposed to live your own life, not live others' lives. If you don't want to live your life and you're just going to tell other people how to live, then just die because you're not necessary.

***** You mean why people have preferences? Why people choose to be different? Why people don't want to wear ink on their skin for life? why people don't conform to tattoo culture like TRADITIONAL tattooists..of today? Well why is a pointless and ''dumb'' question in a way... as the great explainer said HOW is so much more interesting. and from my perspective.. i know what it feels like to have your skin crawl..all the time.. and to feel constantly like they are watching you, plotting against you...and that.. something is seriously wrong...with the way we function..when making the most important decisions...this lead me to be careful with my skin/body and my beliefs. So that's how i came to the conclusion that i rather not get tattoos.

+IntrospectivePerspective Yeah, I think she's great. In the comments for her video on plastic surgery in South Korea, a lot of people were criticizing her for being a hypocrite because look at all of the body modifications she's done. But I don't think they understand. Grace doesn't say she was pressured into getting body modifications and tattoos. It's quite the opposite. Nobody is. It was a personal choice of hers. She feels that in South Korea people are pressured to get plastic surgery because the society is so superficialized, where if that wasn't the case, it wouldn't be so common for girls to get it.

+MattyBlue99 I do not think Grace Nuetral really cares what other people's beauty preferences related towards her own body. If she did care, she might not be tattooed at all. The point of those is probably to make her own ideas about what is beautiful, and hold that precious. To have control over your own looks, your mind, the changes in your mind, and in a very real way, the world you create around yourself.

The reason that tattoos are illegal in Korea is because of gangs. Gangs would tattoo the mobs they were a part of and tattooing is liked down upon because if this. @@ieatcrayons2058 since the sclera (the white portion of the eye being tattooed), is continuous with the cornea, even if you dont puncture the cornea with the needle, the ink can still seep through the small membrane that separates the two. The tattoo artist would have to have surgeon-type skills in order to inject the perfect amount of ink into each pocket while also simultaneously making sure the patient isn't freaking out and moving the whole time. And even with perfect procedure, there isn't enough studies on the effects of tattoo ink on eyeballs because tattoo ink was originally just made for just skin. Most doctors highly advise against getting this procedure done and many are working together to get this practice banned and illegal to operate.

The two big points here is that it doesn't matter what people think about your body. You should do what YOU want because it is your body and only your opinion matters most. The other point is that people should stop judging people by their looks. Jesus fucking Christ, who cares if the lady has eye tattoos or not. Shes likes it, shes does it. And if one wants to conform to the K-beauty standards, that's fantastic too. What she is concerned about are those who are conforming to these standards reluctantly and unhappily. She is concerned that these standards are forcing people to be something they don't want to be. If you are happy with it, that's wonderful. If you aren't happy with it, don't force yourself. YOU DO YOU.

Late reply but These people try so hard to be different it's kinda sad if you notice anyone who comments on their distaste for tattoos the rebuttals always are along the line of "It's her body not yours she can do whatever she wants(which is a lie)" or "Why do you care it's not your body" Like honestly it reminds me of teenagers arguing with their parents about not getting [insert anything a teen could possibly want] it's so fucking childish Some of these people are literally messing themselves up, like this chick, she'll probably go blind in the next few years with those eye tats what pisses me off the most is when they try to act like they aren't doing it for the crowd, trend, attention or trying to be "rebellious" and "different/speacial" but their narratives prove time and time again that that's all it is. Then it's a "I'm not doing it to impress people I don't care what people think" oh really? If you claim this to be a form of self Expression then who exactly are you expressing yourself to and why do you care enough to screw your body up? These people are fucked up mentally and are lying to themselves And honestly i wouldn't but they are being paraded as some kinda rolemodels and being praised for being "liberal" "free"

so many people are saying her tattoos and modifications look shit and have ruined her appearance, but i think they look awesome, i wouldn't get them done myself but if people want to then that's their choice. true beauty comes from feeling comfortable in your body, and that's exactly what grace has achieved

I love people who express themselves with tattoos and body modifications, however it's always sad to hear people who modify themselves seem to talk shit about people who don't do this, it's like they think they're 'free of society's bonds of whatever' and the people who don't are trapped in a vortex of /normalcy/ They usually don't say it directly but like she does in this video "some insight into the pressure of young people here are under to conform" most young people aren't pressured into this, they just choose not to or have a different style they rather wear.

In my opinion, this women has serious phycological, and addiction issues. Balanced people just don't do thing's like that to their faces. Tattoos and piercing are fine, but once you start thinking about getting your eye's tattooed or getting facial scarification, there's just something seriously wrong with your self image. I think it's similar to anorexia or obsessive weight gainer's. Contrary to popular belief, It's also an actual addiction, akin to alcoholism or drug abuse, when she says "Im on a little tattoo high right now, it feels so good." it's because getting a tattoo or scarification puts your body under a lot of stress which makes your brain release dopamine, the same chemical that get's released during sex or when you consume mind altering substances. This women is an addict and I find it irritating and somewhat saddening that our society champions these people as free spirits and liberators allowing them to garner huge following's and most likely inspiring other's to do the same. I know everyone will call me judgmental and say she is some kind of hero, but I guarantee you, that if not now, at some in this women's life she will very much regret altering her body so heavily. These people shouldn't be hated or shunned, but instead of being encouraged, they should be dissuaded from undergoing such drastic body modifications.

+Zaqqum Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just because you think something or someone looks gross, it doesn't mean they are. This is the reason why bloods and crips exist. They think what they favor is better and try to prove it to such a point that violence is involved. Though there is no violence involved with your comment, the statement still stands true. You can think what you want and like what you want. It doesn't make it true. It's just your opinion. Honestly, I think right now that you're an idiot for being so closed-minded. But it doesn't mean you are one. It's just my opinion.

When I say I'm getting my first tattoo in Korea, I mean my first ever tattoo. I would say getting tattoo number one in itself is a special mile stone. So, getting a tattoo in South Korea (where it's illegal unless you are getting it done by a doctor) has an added allure. Put simply, it makes it a little more special getting it done in South Korea.
@abake4871
@abake4871 8 лет назад
It's not illegal to "get" a tattoo, It's illegal to "give" a tattoo if you aren't a licensed doctor. The 'taboo' of tattoos comes partly of South Korea following the Confucian philosophy which emphasized the important not abusing the body you are given (They are more religiously diverse now). Then in the 20th century, members of crime ‘families’ used tattoos for gang affiliations. That's basically it. There is a nice article on korea4expats.com www.korea4expats.com/article-tattoos-Korea-society-attitude.html
