Hahahaha because he's the same Joe, you silly Billy. Haha com'on, they even look and sound the same. It's obvious 😜😝. Actually... OMG no, look he's got a slightly different haircut.... Lemme check. Okay turns out it's two twins, called respectively Joe and Joe. They pretended to be the same person for 14 years since birth until they got found. Shocking!! Na.. I made that up. I'm just bored actually..

Dude, this experiment of muting and soloing bands is beyond cool. Nothing ever helped me this much to notice what a frequency band is. Thanks

Wow!! That was so, so useful! Especially the "Edit all Relative" and the muting advise! I wish, I had seen this sooner. And you have a great pumping singing voice, a build in compressor.. amazing!

Hi joe i always appreciate these videos very helpful. So i have a request (unless a video addresses this) I am currently having trouble with samples and synths that have mono comparability issues. For instance i got a sample pack from the presonus store and a few samples have a single channel that's out of phase making it significantly lower in volume when summed in mono. The only thing i can think of is use the splitter and remove the offending channel what are other ways i can deal with this issue. (also i have a major problem with presence xt as all lot of the sounds available there have the same single channel mono comparability issues stated. I have tried and listened to people say "dont worry about mono compatibility so much" but i cant it makes me feel im loosing clarity were it counts so the fight goes on..

Is there any multiband compression or dynamic EQ that has better connectivity between two instances? What I really want is something that listens to certain frequencies without having to fully duplicate a track and high / low pass it to select just those frequencies. The reason being, say I have a guitar and a vocal and I want the mids of the vocal to trigger the mids of the guitar eq / compression. The problem is the send will take the full range of the input signal when really I only want a part of it.

Hey Joe love your tips. On another subject maybe you can help with a hardware problem. Quantum 26x32 thunderbolt not seen by imac Catalina . It’s been 10 days presonus answered once with the reload security issue. I tried many times all the tips from website nothing works. Maybe someone can help I’m losing an account because of this issue. Please get someone who can help.

Hi Joe, what is the high threshold for? and why is there a low and a high threshold? It's so confusing!

Where would you general want this placed in a mix? Or, if this is for mastering where would it be placed then?
@chrisking6695

For guitars I've learned to place it on the low end of the spectrum especially for palm mutes.

Here’s a dunce question: If you “edit all relative” so that all the bands are adjusted the same...what’s the point of having different frequency bands?
@fueymanchoo1291
@fueymanchoo1291 3 года назад
You are correct. It just makes it a standard compressor at that point. I have an old Marshall ED-1 compressor I use on my guitars. The nice thing about that unit is I can dial in what I want to compress. If I play my big jazz guitars, the bass get's a bit overwhelming so I set the comp. to hit the low end to even out the sound. The nice thing about multi band comps is that you get in essence both a standard comp and a multiband. Once you use one, you will find a ton of uses for it!

It should be linking the settings between the bands, but each band is still compressing independently. Even if the attack/release times and threshold are the same for each band. The side chain for each band is only listening to the frequencies within that range. So if you have program material where you want to set a general threshold of -12 (or whatever) on your mix buss, you may hit a part of the chorus where the cymbals are going crazy, and that upper band is going to be reacting to that and compressing down on those specific frequencies, but at that same moment, maybe your bass frequencies are only just touching the threshold a little bit - the compressor won’t be squashing every- only the frequencies that are getting out of control. When used lightly, with the same settings- it can be away to even out the balance across your track. I think it reeaaalllyy depends on the type of music or sound your are running through it. You might want the kick drum to pump the whole track... well great use a normal compressor. But you might not want that, and you can use the shared threshold for general leveling and let that one band work harder than the other bands on the problem frequencies. It’s a little more natural sounding and transparent to me when set that way. Multiband with linked settings have served me well for sound design, acoustic instruments (jazz and classical), ambient, experimental. All sorts of stuff. But if it’s not working in a linked mode.... unlink it and set your independent atk/rel/thr....

Well.... this would have been a good video, except that you completely glossed over how to use low and high threshold, and that was the whole reason I watched the video. 🤨
