Exploring PIONEERS best Product - No one uses: THE TORAIZ 

What many don't give this thing credit for is how good the sound quality is. Everything from the DAC to the filter, to the basic but effective eq effect. I don't run anything from the stock library. In fact I deleted all of the stock samples. Most of the stuff I run is from splice or from my KB6 collection. The read reason this thing is loved by it's owners is the insanely easy workflow and ease of use. Also the per beat modulation and offset adjustments are key to making the grooves sit right. I'll never sell mine.

Hi Jon, hope youre well. I agree with most of what you say, the Toraiz SP16 is basic, bit of flop, not marketed correctly, other similar gear can do way better(but complex has workflows), and as an owner of one of these, its not well supported in terms of firmware either(not buggy, just extra features we'd like) it probably only needs 1 more firmware upgrade and its a finished product. HOWEVER... if you're DJ and wanting to get into music production(which most are compelled to these days to grow their presence), or/and your beginner to music production, plus you have a pioneer dj setup(not required though).... THEN this bit of kit from pioneer is a MUST BUY. Why?.... because of its limitations; the very reason its seen as a flop. The user, is forced to focus on the basics of music production, most of the which if you're DJ you'll be familiar with, however the Toraiz helps to formulate this into a music production MINDSET, which is the transition that most will struggle with - hence Toraiz SP16 fits that niche. Essentially you'll quickly go from selecting sounds, scales, instruments, idea/pattern generation, fx and automation, arrangement and finally a bit of EQ. Essentially, in one simple and stable box, you cover all the core elements of music production. I say this, because this is how i'm currently learning on my channel/vlog (ive gone back to basic to limit myself) and i find the limitations are exactly what you need to avoid overwhelm AND speed up productivity. In my experience, the SP16, is a productivity hack for me to get my tracks started, then transition into DAW for more detailed work. (THANKS IF YOU READ THIS FAR!)

I just purchased the Pioneer SP-16. I NEVER produced and I'm a complete moron. However, I was able to make a track after two days. Granted I watched about 6 hours of videos. Here's some advice to everyone: update the software immediately. Make sure all samples are converted to 24bit/48kHz. Having a sampler of this caliber adds so much to any mix. I can make my techno mixes so much more cinematic, epic, and give it really dark musical presence.

You should update the firmware, they added a second fx channel.

I think if it was $600 it’d sell like hotcakes at the release price of $1299 and even its current discount price of $899 it can’t compete with MPC One at $699 or Akai Force at $999 , you should check out the Toraiz Squid Sequencer too. Had it a while and it’s NICE

I love my Toraiz SP-16. Nothing beats it for ease of use and approachability.

Nice video. Great title. The sp16 is pioneers best product. It's very limited but that's a good thing if you ask me. It means you can't spend more time getting less done. The Dave smith filter is the same filter from the prophet 6 synthersizer. It's a famous filter because of how nice it sounds. It's one of the best parts of the sampler. It's an anolog filter and gives everything that goes through it an awesome sound. Try playing something with the drive on full and turn the filter off while it's still playing. There's huge difference. The drive on there really beefs up the sound. Saying it is a marketing stunt is overlooking the significance that filter brings to the sampler. I would love to see another video from you using some of your synths with the samplers through channels, midi control and live recording features. Thanks

the screen with the faders and arrangement and the secondhand price compared to newly convinced mé, but now I know my sp16, lol it's so much more, so much better in everything. It's a portable song composition production studio with extreme synchronization tools. sampler, midi, effects, sequencer, arranger. to be honest, it feels and looks so good. this is the best instrument I bought in my life.

You have to Update the Maschine to 1.60, so you have two FX for each Sound..

Btw, in the video, it looks like you’re running an old firmware of the Toraiz Sp-16. If you update it, you’ll get to add more effects!! That was a huge bonus for mine

Maschine+ no longer uses a separate computer; but has one build in. BTW: Armin van Buuren uses the Toraiz SP-16 sometimes in his live sets.

I have one, and it rules, but it was indeed a *massive* flop. Right when it came out, both the Digitakt and MPC Live I came out to fill the same niche at half the price, and it wasn't really feature complete until last year. But just wait til it is officially discontinued. I'm suspecting it's gonna all of a sudden have its day, like the 303, 909, Tempest, etc...

Get the updates yo. Bicep, Detroit Swindle, Dark Sky, Carl Cox & Disclosure all use the SP-16. It totally is the best tool for what you describe.

Ugh seriously just needs one more firmware update and it would be perfect. It has no ability to record midi from an external controller. I’d also like to see an arpeggiator as well.

Hey Jon. Great video. I own an akai MPC live. It has a step sequencer that is sick! You use the sequencer through the touchscreen. But it also allows you to draw in velocity with your finger. You should check it out. And you can do sound design on it too!!

I am doing a live performance with recording audience responses on my MPC Live and then chopping them up on the MPC and playing them back along with my DJ set. Is this possible on the Toraiz SP16?

Bro...I'm saying... The sp-16 gets no 💕💕💕 It's my favorite piece of equipment.i lusted after it hard when I saw it for the first time.MPC style pads AND 808 step pads!?!?! I'm sold. In addition making chops on this is a breeze. My only real complaint is the FX or lack thereof.sorely disappointing

I'd like to get into music making, and currently as used I can get this one or an mpc one. To be frank all I could critique is the sound of the taps, so are those binary or the sound is changes depending the force you apply? /yes, I know, all have at least 2 stages, but if the second stage is for one use then it does not count/

i bought one in march and another last week. you prob need 2 but i got the second for 600$ the first for 800$, the as-1 is nice to add too. prob get another one of those

I think no one buys it because all the other devices are better positioned to appeal to someone: mpc one/live sampler (autosampling), vsts, usb hosting, mc 707 zencore / roland sound library, digitakt has the elektron workflow, maschine has the NI integration. this thing is more expensive than all these devices and while its not bad, I dont know who its exactly aimed at. i personally would recommend the mpc one first and foremost to anyone who wants a sampler / groovebox, without having more specific needs, it can be beat at the current pricepoint (to be fair this is after years of software patches and adding features). btw. im not trashing the device, im sure its fun to have decent pads (are they decent?) and a step sequencer with a pretty nicely spaced layout and enough sampler / sequencing features. edit: I just realized it has analog filters. well that would be the selling point then? not sure how useful it is in practice on a sampler (with 2 ins at that). edit2: okay i went back to watch some videos and I see why you love it, the whole workflow is very immediate with the layout and the limits on the device. its still a very expensive piece of kit, especially today compared to the market.

Great demo of one of the best standalone sampling workstations on the market. It inspires and gives you the tools you need to make music without getting in the way of your creativity. Love mine and would buy it again.

I really hope you haven't made the price of these things go up. I remember this was suppose to be competition for the Live which came out just after but this was too expensive and didn't have enough memory or something like that. Pioneer wouldn't bring the price down either so it just sat there and no one was spending so much on something like this.

It's limited but I love this machine. I made a few sample packs especially for the SP16 using the slice mode. This way I get 16 samples per pad.

Elektron Analog Rytm is way more dope!!! And the sequencer is also way more dope and the companion Vst (overbridge) is also super dope. Plus it also has analog synthesis, analog overdrive, analog distortion, analog filter, analog compression.....It's just 10 times more sick.

When I reach for TR 909 drum sounds, I just use the real deal. I know you have a Korg M1 there but if you start buying analog vintage gear that is when you start spending the money. Subs will then be asking you for the millionth time how can you afford all that gear. I also had an M1 a long time ago, when it came out. Bought in 1986. It was state of the art for it’s sequencer and ROM samples.

Im addicted to having gear coming in the mail too. I ALWAYS have something coming.

REQUEST VIDEO: Pioneer Toraiz midi capabilities Hey man, great video! I currently have this device at my disposal. It's a great device! However, the midi possibilities have not been properly discussed anywhere... could you make a video about the midi possibilities of this device? The Toraiz has a midi clock ⏰ that you can send, if you send this to a delay that has midi sync like te (IK multimedia x-drive) you can make this delay run in sync with your samples. if you do this with a midi interface you can also run your analog synth in it.

I have a DJM V10 and 2x VCDJ Nexus 2. On channel 1 I have the DJS 1000. Everything seems fine, but on sampling from CDJ to DJS I only get 1 channel output. It might be a DJM problem, but all works fine. Except the sampling comes from 1 speaker. This is not the case when I connect my headphones into the DJS 1000 directly. ( I am not using any laptop here) The connection seems to be the problem when sampling directly from CDJ to DJS 1000. Any clue what is wrong?

What do you think would be another good alternative to this that is really a live instrument? What reasons would this not be used for a live setting instead of a studio setting?

I think the problem is that it looks like a tool for DJs. And as a DJ tool it's too expensive. It would make much more sense for producers, but they would rather buy an MPC for this price.

It's a nice gadget but I would rather use my Ableton Push 2. Of course the Push is made to integrate perfectly in Ableton so not really useful for Logic and it does not work standalone. If I could have a nice hardware device it would be a NI Komplete Kontrol S88 (because of the display and the amazing integration with Kontakt) or an MPE device (as Ableton now has native MPE support) like Roli Seaboard Rise 49 or a Sensel Morph

Oh man finally you got it, I love the Toriaz SP-16 because I prefer adjusting my sample hands-on rather than using native instrument battery instead while making music, However, it not available in my country, and getting it really taxing for me to get one here. Man I wish I can own one soon but until then have to stick with battery.

It's starting to get ridiculous how much money you spent for your gear. Yeah it's kind of entertaining but expensive gear almost on a daily basis 🤔😄. Sure you can call it investment but it seems like there isn't much value from a lot of these things in a practical way and more of a gimmick one doesn't really use in his actual work flow. And I'd doubt that the actual music becomes better buy spending all the time for a new short excitement of new gear. I'm sure you would be a millionaire by now if there wasn't all this gear 😅

Actually it is on gear list I ended up getting an octatrack instead. I think the pioneer is more instant then the Elektron.

abelton does this reallllllllllly welllll . You can sequence one part and just keep adding to it . Now with abelton 11 you have tracking when you record so you can add two different parts off difftent takes to make one

I was super hyped for this monster and then the specs came out aaannnddd... no uninterrupted song changes and very limited pattern length. Absolute no-go for live sets :/ unusable when i want to play 2 hours straight

The reason it flopped I think is because apparently they rushed it to the market with lots of bugs and missing features. Though most things are fixed now and features have been added, it never got off that initial bad reputation. Similar story as the Akai Force I reckon.
