I’m going to be a dad anytime today or tomorrow and I can’t wait to do stuff like this with my kid. Update: our baby was born at 1:57 PM and it has to be the best feeling ever!
I feel like I spent a substantial portion of my youth strategizing and mental rehearsal for all the times that I would inevitably find myself in quicksand. I am sooooooo ready. Still, after 45 years on this earth I have yet to use this quicksand survival skill!
"I really want the people watching to able to see it" I see you're raising quite the little filmmaker over there. Good on you for instilling your talent and passion onto future generations. These are the sorts of things he'll remember of you long after you're gone.
Thank you for letting your son get scared. While this can be seen as a negative comment- you let him see there are unforeseen, unintended consequences. He knew who to call- Dad would be there. Love your work.
Aww, hearing X be so vocal for the first time is really special. What a clever kid he is. Really makes me wish I had some kids. You're a lucky man, Van. Thanks for an awesome video again dude. And be careful in these storms. Much love from Max in London. Cheers
I'm just impressed a five year old in this day and age knows what quicksand is! As a GenXer growing up in the 70s, we were fed a steady diet of quicksand on TV. But nobody has talked about it for 40 years. Love his enthusiasm. Glad you took him out on an adventure while the nannies were blasting us with phone messages to stay at home.
This video could’ve been five hours long and I would watch every second of it. Damn, I miss the days when my daughter wasn’t too cool to explore with me in my Jeep. His enthusiasm brings back so many happy memories. 😊
And BAM! Just like that Van has a pro film crew! Great job X. It runs in the family! (And thanks Van for letting your kid push himself and expand his own boundaries).
when he felt like he was sinking and started crying I remembered Mr. Rogers saying children have powerful feelings which we shouldn't take for granted. One day he will be a big man and remember how his dad was always there for him
A few weeks ago we had a nasty ice storm where most people (and rightly so) stayed home, but i took my kids to church and for a drive anyway, it was just us and the pastor, we had a nice time. I hope i can instill in my kids a healthy respect for "conditions" while not handicapping them with fear of things they can't control. Kudos to you for giing out and letting him live real life instead of hiding him away where it's "safe"
Oh how I miss these days. When your boys are young and the whole world is full of magic and possibilities. Cherish these times man. It’s gone in a blink of an eye and you will miss it till the day you’re gone from this world.
I live in the area you live in Vann. Luckily i was in the UK last week and missed the storms and the earthquake. Your kid will never forget the storms - great memories and moments for him with his Dad. Stay safe.
As a parent..... this was the moment you made your son love what you do. He may not end up doing that for a living, but he will fully understand why you did it. I hope he follows in your footsteps. He took some incredible shots for a 5-year-old!
His reaction sinking in quick sand is exactly how i picture it would have reacted in the same situation as a kid. I thought quicksand was guaranteed death as a kid💀
Your son has a great sense of confidence...your cultivation of his confidence shines through in this video. With a little more practice and a gimbal, he'll be a great cameraman soon!
THIS is good parenting. Spending all day on screens is useless, get in the car with your kid and take them to see nature! It's these "little moments" that children remember when they grow up. Anybody can take their child to Disney World, but these mini adventures are the special ones for those precious short child years....and as a bonus don't cost a dime! Kudos to you Van, X is going to turn out just right!
Woah first time being first. Love these videos Van, I hope you continue to make amazing videos I continue to learn and shape my own understanding of the world with your channel. Thank You After watching the film I have to say there's something special about you and your process that allows a video to capture not only incredible events around you but also the curiosity and joy from a child's perspective that I don't think anyone else on this platform has the ability to do.
Thank you for sharing. Reminds me of me times with my son when he was 5. He's now 25. We lived in the coastal range of northern CA. You know, Santa Cruz area? Also thank you for sharing the beauty and power of nature. Media has been only portraying it as awful, and for some I'm certain it's been very difficult and don't want to minimize that, but by the same token let's not ignore the wonder and beauty and scarriness through he eyes of a 5 year old.
What a great adventure. Did the same things with my boys. Helps them respect the power of nature and learn to manage calculated risks. They are 21 and 26 now and they "strive to be the masters of their environments, not the other way around'. Thanks for sharing your adventure! I've shared your "Why dangerous toys are good for kids" video with several overly protective young parents. 👍
I truly love that you have your son in the video and that you're not afraid to show him or part of him or side views unlike like your brother...... I think one deeply sad thing about Casey is that he doesn't involve his kids at all, this seems super strange to me or at least some decent side views of his girls so we can kind of watch them grow up 🌷🙏🌟🙂
Thank you for sharing Van. I grew up in Costa Mesa but am familiar with the canyons. Your child is adorable. So great to see what's happening in SoCal.
Van- I hope your house is okay. That area of the planet can be challenging to live in. I love this little adventure with your son, so cool, he will always remember this. Please keep making art about the wonderfully mundane. Cheers SWAMP FOOT, Steve aka The Talking Fly.
I grew up in topanga and just moved to Oregon. Seeing those waterfalls and that creek next to the road at red rock park is insane!!!! Topanga doesn’t always look like this I’m kinda jealous I’m missing it
Nice video man.. I like how you are promoting your Patreon channel better these days also. The old "this video is on RU-vid this week, but next week you don't get to see it" wasn't happening for me. The new approach is way improved. Love that the old Van is back!
Im ok with making this a 2 guys adventure series. The Doctor (from Dr Who) always has companions with him, because he has seen everything already. Having "normal" people around, just gives context and lets you experience it again from the perspective of someone for whom this is all fresh.
