Came home from a long day of working a homicide. Got cleaned up and then collapsed into my chair to forget about the day and watch you two work and discover things at your farm house. I just want to say thanks because your videos allow me to escape for a few minutes and see something positive and constructive instead of negative and destructive if that makes sense. Keep up the good work. Don't get burned out and have fun. Peace!

I’m not a plumber but I am a water utility operator. My advice is to not spend another moment tracing the existing pipe unless it’s to figure out where to cut it out because it’s in the way. It’s likely in poor shape and not made of appropriate material. Find the well and have the well inspected and tested. If it’s good, then you’ve won a mini lottery! You may need a reverse osmosis system and UV system to make it potable (that means safe for consumption) but whoever tests your well should be able to help you with that. Regardless, you need to install new water lines into and within the house and I would expect that there are some sort of local regulations with this kind of project. While DIY is fun and a lot less expensive, sometimes it’s worth bringing in the pro’s, even on a consulting rate.

I'd be tempted to just use the well for the garden, they already have a mains water meter, which means the water quality is tested and guaranteed by the water board! More expensive but much easier than maintaining your own well.

Yes, esp plumbing will be much easier and actually cheaper in the long run to give to the professionals Also old pipes might be lead, so not only not up the modern code, but a health hazard.
@daveturnbull7221

Yes as so many others have said, replace the lead pipes - they really are dangerous. As others suggested a metal detector may work but it will depend on the depth of the pipe. The other suggestion I saw was for a system I've seen used by the waterboards in UK for finding leaks. that should work regardless of depth but I don't know if the camera they put down is small enough to fit in your existing pipe. Now for the really import stuff. Illia you look worn out and Marina - you don't look far behind him. Please look after yourselves because you got a lot of folks here who love you both to bits despite never having met you.

Plumbers have whats called a borescope or and endoscope and its a cable with a camera on it that they push down your water line and it can see anything that is wrong. And once the cable finds the well they can use a locator outside that tracks a cable inside the borescope that will show exactly where the water line is and how deep it is. Good luck
@Ragnar8504
@Ragnar8504 2 года назад
I've never heard of anyone running a borescope down what looks like 1" lead pipe though. I'd assume that the pipe exits the house roughly in a straight line and start digging for it where the cobbles end. On the other hand, as you need to replace it anyway, why not start digging right where the pipe enters the house and follow it back to the well?

Just for interest... The Latin name for lead is Plumbum, which is where the word plumber comes from. A plumber was the Roman name for a craftsman who works with lead, either for pipe work, roofing, including flashings, or raidwater heads and down pipes. I trained as a plumber in the 60's and a lot of the work was in leadwork. I did a 4 year apprenticeship. All that training and most of it was outdated soon after I was qualified. Such is life.

Several people mentioned using a metal detector, good idea. Lead pipes have to go, Pex (plastic) line is great stuff. Once you find the well there should be a water line going down into the water with a foot valve, the foot valve keeps the water from draining back from the house. The well needs to be pumped out to see if it recovers quick enough and see how deep it is, this may take a few trys to get the water flowing back in the well. After it's pumped out a few times then you should get it tested. You will also see what was used for cribbing in the well, it could very well be brick, possibly wood. Keep smilin

@Ragnar8504
@Ragnar8504 2 года назад
@@marcryvon I'd also say the galvanised pipes should go considering how rusty that filter looks. They might either be almost clogged on the inside or just about ready to spring a leak or both. Going from copper pipe at the pump to galvanised at the shutoff is also a pretty bad idea and very likely to cause leaks. PEX isn't used much in Europe, MLCP ("multicouche" in French) is the most common pipe, and of course copper. MLCP pipe is much cheaper than copper but the fittings are so expensive they outweigh the savings on the pipe. It's a sandwich pipe, PEX on the inside, then a layer of aluminium for mechanical strength and another layer of PEX on the outside for protection. Both compression and crimp fittings are available but compression fittings need to remain accessible in most European countries and crimp fittings require tools you need to either hire or buy. Solder fittings for copper are dirt-cheap but obviously you need a bit of skill to use them. Even seasoned plumbers don't always get solder joints tight on the first try.

Yes, completely replace the water pipes / plumbing please. Lead pipes cause poisoning. Plus the lead pipe is weak and old, will crack and then leak. No point to keep it. What an enormous job you have taken on, but when completed the sense of achievement will be huge. Hope that your family is safe and well.

Wisteria is so beautiful and smells so nice ☺️ but think really carefully about where you plant it. It can easily get out of control and its roots will spread and damage bricks, cobblestone, etc.

As you expose pipe, conduit lines remember that it is a good idea to make them "future accessible . Use marked brick, non corroding plates, insulation etc. Even going thru wall put in access panels. Make up schematics, hard sheets and computer records for reprints. hang them in basement in ziplock water proof bags, carefully measuring where and what. You may want to run , say, cat 5, heating elements in future so make your service trench and wall holes a little bigger. You've already done the hard work , why repeat it. Same for outside.

As others have already pointed out, it's very likely that you will discover that your farm has two sources of ground water: a well that get the water from the aquifer, and an underground independent reservoir that collect the rain from the roof gutters. I found both during the restoring of my early XIX century farm house.

Using underground radar with an expert, you can figure out the water system. The underground radar will show where the pipes are. You have to realize you will have to meet government codes for water, so lead is out. You need to find out before you bury the pipes under concrete. Ask your neighbors they probably have a great recommendation. Great video.

Lead (metal) rhymes with head, but the same spelling is used for lead, such as a lead role in a film, rhymes with read. I know you have googled it by now and know you have to swap those pipes as they are a huge health and environmental hazard. Great work as always.

FYI depending on how wide and or obstructed the lead pipe is you may be able to run a Pex line through it to the source. That way you wouldn't have to dig it up and you'd have the additional protection of the metal pipe over the plastic for future digging.

Oh how I love wisteria, but living in the southeastern USA I would NEVER have it. It's fine if you are a gardener that will live forever to keep it trimmed. But we gardeners can't live forever. The video linked is a young man that lives in Georgia USA that is rescuing an old farm that had been abandoned for decades. I'm sure the lady that planted her lovely wisteria never had the intention that it would become the "Wisteria Apocalypse"! It is fun to watch, but I'm sure dreadful to deal with! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U27_b9rQQ3w.html

Depending on how "new" the tree is it might have sent roots into the well and damaged it, even cement ones will crack if the roots try hard enough to get thru to the water. I live on catchment water and we change our water filters once a month, using both carbon and sediment ones. We also treat our water with baking soda and clorax to keep down other unwanted things, but then our tank is above ground, as we are in hawaii and it will not freeze.

Always a pleasure, digging up rubble. I can imagine you're tired of it, and the thought of having to start again in the next stage can be a daunting one. When you try to start the pump, leave the exit valve almost shut until the pump starts to build pressure. then slowly open the valve.

English Lesson 😉👍 for fun.... Lead 👂red is a noun; The element, heavy metal or an adjective meaning something heavy as in "hurry up, get the lead out" or "that went over like a lead balloon" Lead 👂reed is a verb; meaning to go before or pull something from the front as in leader. They are both spelled the same but come from slightly different root words from different places/languages. The word you are looking for to add water to the pump, we would say "prime the pump" because it is the first thing you have to do. This dates back to the old hand pumps when they had to be primed before they will work. Some modern pumps don't need it but it is better for them if you do. Your hard work, as always is an inspiration. Also, I appreciate that you put the effort into learning English to bring us this content too ❤ thanks.

The first thing I would do is , have a sample of your water tested by a lab. You need to get rid of your lead pipe as iam sure it's no longer used or allowed in Belgium. When I worked in Friesland in 1970 they were already switching to plastic pipe. Keep in mind that even some type of plastic pipe is no longer used. This is especially in the use of under floor heating. But iam pretty sure in the EU you can find what you need. They were years ahead of North America. Is your water pump being shut off by a pressure switch in the system. Take care.

Things like lead pipes are often grandfathered in but that doesn't mean it's a good idea to continue using the pipes even if there's no legal requirement to replace them. Besides, now is the ideal time for replacing those pipes. Once the concrete floor is down, no one will ever want to touch them again. Seriously, seeing they already have mains water I might be tempted to abandon the entire well pump setup and maybe use a submersible pump for watering the garden in the future, plumb everything else to the mains water.

The pump sounds in good working condition.

You can also try water dowsing rods - there are videos on RU-vid showing how to do it. It’s an old fashioned method but it works for me - you can even use two pieces of coat hanger wire.

No wonder people choose the easier route with old buildings and just demolish them . Thank God people like you choose the difficult job of restoration , or there would be very little charm and no visible history in the world . You need strong backs , strong hearts , and an unshakable faith and devotion to the value of the task . Also you must be archeologists , bricklayers, plumbers and detectives. Mostly , you must be amazing and wonderful people . You are all of those things . God bless you in your life and endeavours.

If your well sucks air instead of water it needs to be professionally pumped up in vacuum again. We had that too in our Hungarian farm. But when you don't know where your well is you have a problem or drill a new well

I hope all the work you are doing will last for many, many years. Some day someone will be digging up your work and commenting on what was done. You are adding another layer of history to this old farm. (I wonder if RU-vid will still be around? :D) The tulips in your front yard are so nice to see. My daffodils are just barely popping out of the ground and we just got several cm of snow here in western Canada.

That is such back-breaking work to dig out the subfloors and old foundations. Illia will have the strongest back in Belgium after this is all over! Wouldn't it have been wonderful to see how that house had changed floor-plans over it's lifetime? So many levels and odd floor layouts. Good luck with your wisteria vine. Our temperature swings here in the middle of the U.S. are just as wild, and we sometimes have to bring plants indoors, also. Today it is 29 C and tomorrow will only be 8 C! I hope you get lots of beautiful blooms on it. Thanks again for an interesting video!

I also bring some of my plants indoors for the winter. My basement is painted white to reflect the light from grow lights set on timers. Been doing this for many years.

I hesitate to offer advice on your water supply because I'm confused about the water sources that you have. The water you previously found stored beneath your yard was a very large storage system probably used for purposes other than human consumption. That appeared to me as a very sophisticated "Cistern" system, that was used for everything but human consumption. Being of Belgian descent myself, I was raised among many Belgians here in America. Due to the lack of a public water supply, most people had Wells for their potable water and since wells sometimes run dry, they constructed Cisterns for washing clothes, gardening, etc. Many people had natural Springs; they were the lucky ones. If you don't know where the Well is, you need to find it and have it tested. Keep the Cistern, which you are fortunate to have. If you haven't already done it, route the gutter runoff from your buildings into that Cistern for future use in gardens, etc. I have been avidly watching everything you do and I must say I'm impressed at your energy and work ethic, even during this crisis in Ukraine.

Hoping you get the water situation under control. I would like to drink well water above city treated water any day. Grew up on well water and it's full of minerals that are good for you. Thank you for sharing the process.

The good news with your digging is you'll be able to route and bury the new pex lines where you want, think about how you want to bring it in, which rooms or areas you want it to go, and think about putting a cistern or water system in the basement there where the pump currently is if that is suitable. It seems like you might want/need to run conduit for electrical to go to these areas as well, may as well do it at the same time so you can bury it all again and be done with it. :)

Over the winter, I made modifications to my wheelbarrow which will allow me to carry heavy weight over irregular ground. I added a 2nd wheel, identical to the original one, and approximately 300 mm track width. It is not as easy to turn in a tight space but loads are not critical to balance from side-to-side and pushing over uneven ground, without requiring great strength in the arms & hands. This would make it easier for Marina to help you!

Wishing you luck with the pipes. We had lead pipes in the front of our house which we replaced 25 years ago. Please, please replace them before using any water for anything other than toilets. Also, it looks like you have tulips, jonquils/daffodils growing wild in your front garden. Lovely!
