Donald Hoffman interview on spacetime, consciousness, and how biological fitness conceals reality. We discuss Nima Arkani-Hamed's Amplituhedron, decorated permutations, evolution, and the unlimited intelligence.
The Amplituhedron is a static, monolithic, geometric object with many dimensions. Its volume codes for amplitudes of particle interactions & its structure codes for locality and unitarity. Decorated permutations are the deepest core from which the Amplituhedron gets its structure. There are no dynamics, they are monoliths as in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

All of us who are ready for idealism/consciousness as fundamental structures and reality were born around a certain period. 1940 to 1960. We all had common cultural and conceptual frameworks. One thing I'm an expert on is physiology. I have deep knowledge of this as I have done scientific research in it. In physiology, The complexity is beyond anything mechanical. It starts with biochemistry, organizes into cells, organizers into organelles, organizers into cells, organized into subsystems, organizers into systems, organizes into physiology. If you look at it mathematically the number of permutations that are possible rise exponentially with each level. It becomes a universe in itself. No machine operates that way. Not even the supercomputer or, the global workspace of Google.

One of the wonderful things about Donald Hoffman (‘s icon) is that, despite the high levels of technicality, the immense intricacies of his theories, and the academic works that he talks about with his incredible breath of knowledge, he consistently grants soundbites of wisdom that point toward the important essence behind it all. Which wonderfully allows for an applicable appreciation for the truth he orbits around.

As great as Orch-Or is, it definitely takes as it's starting point space-time. They definitely have consciousness as center of their theories but Donald doesn't use space-time...But I do think there's a reason why Hoffman's starting point for his grand theory is consciousness. From consciousness he is building space time, quantum mechanics and what it is like to eat an apple. Great post! I don't think many people make that intuitive leap: I happen to be one that did

I am just another guy, which is just an avatar of the "one unlimited intelligence" that we all are. (1:37:11) It's unlimited because it contains itself, and the further you go, the more of itself it "creates". An intelligence that is having a dream could never reach such a thing as a boundary from where its dream ends. Any boundary it would imagine would only be a part of its dream. It's a concept, and it can only be valid within the concept because that's all there is. An intelligence that must be unlimited because it isn't contained within something else and thereby isn't able to have such a thing as a property that would give it shape. It doesn't have a beginning or an end, and it doesn't start or stop because terms like that are only valid within this concept. To be an "avatar" of the one unlimited intelligence "that we all are" is what creates the illusion of duality. Duality is the dissonance that will emerge when this intelligence, which is all that there is, believes itself to be separate from itself. A dissonance that is part of what makes up this concept, who are having a delusion of a "you", that believes itself to be something separate, like a person that is having a conversation with someone else within this concept. You can’t get something from nothing, and if you could, then there would be nowhere for it or a place where it could reside because the whole notion of there being something rather than nothing is only a point of view that is valid from within this unlimited intelligence that is having this dream. What you describe when you say, "I am just another guy, which is just an avatar of the one unlimited intelligence that we all are," is God. The Bible says that no matter where we go, we cannot escape the presence of God. Well, you can't escape the Matrix in a self-contained concept that is also all that there is. Jeremiah 23:23-33 in context 23 "I am a God who is everywhere and not in one place only. (The concept lacks a true duality.) 24 No one can hide where I cannot see them. Do you not know that I am everywhere, in heaven and on earth? (This could also describe a four-dimensional being within this concept looking down on us from a fourth dimension.) "The one unlimited intelligence that we all are" sounds a lot like panentheism, which means God is present in all creation by virtue of his omnipresence and omnipotence, sustaining every creature in being without being identified with any creature. To describe "one unlimited intelligence" as "all that there is" would be indistinguishable from describing God with creation in such a way that the two are indistinguishable.

Carlos: you can't see base reality (but)...do you think the practice of meditation give us or can possibly move us in that direction you know even if we can't see it directly? This is what the objective of meditation is in the East. (Not the popularized commercial meditation in the West.) "Enlightenment" is precisely when you see it directly or rather more accurately, when being the truth, as Hoffman so eloquently stated it. There is a mountain of literature on this. These are what the "Buddhas" claim. This requires a total commitment to seeking the truth - not just sitting meditation, but changing lifestyle and behavior. This is Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism 101 (with respect to its contemplative traditions). Practically all the numerous Hoffman's interviews are explaining and reinforcing basic learnings from these contemplative traditions in the language of today's Western society. This is useful and needs to be done. The fundamentals were always there - literally for thousands of years (this is not an exaggeration, if you know the history).
@Carlos.Explains
@Carlos.Explains Год назад
Thank you for this wonderful comment. I suspect that meditative practices do move us in the direction of the ultimate truth - they likely offer an insight into base reality and perhaps hold the answer as to why we're having this conscious experience. Why are we here? Why is there anything at all? I think contemplative practices can certainly help answer these questions (or at the very least, assuage anxieties related to them).

First, thanks a lot for your great job 👏 The idea of “our consciousness is watching the reality through the VR headset and renders simplified/processed projections on the go” is okay. I’ve read about this in Bhagavad Gita, LOL. So, if we are all okay with this approach, how can we use it daily? How to jump out of the headset and update some stuff in space-time?) More straightforward: if a wall is an illusion, how can we walk through it?
@Carlos.Explains
@Carlos.Explains Год назад
Thanks George! Don often makes the case that we should take the object (the wall) seriously, but not literally. I.e. a blue folder on your desktop. The folder is not actually blue, it's just a symbol representing computer code/diodes/transistors (hardware & software). But it would be a mistake to just drag and drop the folder into the trash bin, as you would lose all the information/work inside the folder.

I've had this thought over the years that if me and any other person could switch consciousnesses (if you could imagine that), neither of us would have any idea that anything had happened. I've spent a lot of time looking for someone who had similar ideas, and I think Don Hoffman would express that idea instead as consciousnesses or the single consciousness switching interfaces. It makes intuitive sense to me that we could all be god experiencing himself from every possible point of view. And why wouldn't he? A unity literally has nothing else to do lol. A lot of my own intuitive thoughts about things of this nature seem to be in tune with Don's ideas. I'm very glad to have found his way of thinking, and this video in particular has been very nice. Thank you for creating it.

Apropos the claim that how we evolved (in mere 4 dimensions) limits what we are are able to be aware/conscious of: I've contrived conceptual tools (lingual lenses) for grasping (gaining and maintaining insight into) what it is that we tend to avoid becoming thoroughly aware of (insightful about); and how and why this evasive aspect of humanity exists. More specifically, that the cognitive and social/emotional functions-functions that we have in common with our closest simian cousins the chimpanzees-got leveraged (and to a far less prominent extent masked) by uniquely in our phylogeny occurred DNA-changes that amongst else gave rise to our (ambiadvantageously adaptive) language functions. These ambiadvantageous changes (primarily pleiotropic mutations of DNA-the fundamental molecular Unit of Inheritance in the phylogeny of flora as well as fauna) were successfully pioneered by common ancestors of ours. These individuals are aptly to be seen-as are all other individuals (including "eusocial individuals" such as ant-colonies)-as biologic evolution's basic Units of Reproduction. Individuals are what classic Darwinian Natural Selection (such as sexual selection and group selection) 'operate on'. I refer to the in our recent phylogeny (evolution) added language function associated ways of coping (with lifetime challenges of opportunity type as well as of threat type) with the acronym EAVASIVE. EAVASIVE approximately refers to that, how and why a great variety of more or less adaptive human neuroticism exists. I only managed to arrive at this "MAD"-inspired conceptual tool after abundant error plagued trials and by resorting to doggedly applying a by Werner Heisenberg as if heralded Tolerance Principled attitude. Presumably, today's humans (all of whom are examples of the so called "modern human" lineage) manifest EAVASIVE characteristics to a greater degree than did all other since long extinct human lineages of so called "archaic humans". The most surely known of these once upon a time contemporaries of "modern humans" are the Neanderthals and Denisovans. Most current non-African humans have an admixture of DNA from either one or both of these archaic humans. The origin of this (thus far on balance adaptive) admixture is likely to have involved occasional bride stealing in conjunction with how "moderns" most likely contributed strongly to the demise of the archaic lineages by murderous raiding. The extra EAVASIVEness involved in this usurping by "moderns" of "archaics" would not necessarily have manifested as better wielding of better weapons but is more likely to have mainly consisted of that "moderns" were more able and more inclined to organize raids and to staunchly maintain a murderous focus of "actention" while raiding. Perhaps interbreeding caused by raid-associated bride stealing was as common (or even more common) a cause of the recently discovered admixture of archaic DNA than was clandestine 'romantic' encounters between female "moderns" and "archaic" males. aeimcinternetional.org

Time = the rate at which gravity pulls one infinity through all other infinites. ♾️1 becomes ♾️2. The sum of ♾️2 is equal to ♾️^♾️-♾️1. The sum of ♾️3 is equal to ♾️^♾️-the sum of ♾️1+♾️2. Idk how else to describe it but it feels like consciousness = a higher dimension of gravity. Which so far as I know gravity needs some kind of mass in order to be generated. Hyper mass? Gravity to me has the qualities of sinking, pulling/pushing, progressing, transitioning, motion, time, consciousness. We observe particles pass through time as we ourselves, made of the very same types of particles , experience the sensation of passing through time. We can remember what the past was like bc our brains are existing in a higher dimensional state which consists of one point that is = ♾️^♾️. If point A is ♾️^♾️ and point B is ♾️^♾️-point A and point C is ♾️^♾️- the sum of point A and B then point B is also ♾️^♾️+ point C. Sorry I’m not a mathematician I’m certain there is another way to write that but I hope the point is still understood. So what I’m trying to get at is gravity is the pulling/pushing effect that drives not only a pull in the 3rd dimension but at least through the 4th as well which would be the sensation of being pulled/pushed through the 4th dimension or time. What’s interesting to me is that at every point that is = ♾️^♾️ it is also equal to ♾️^♾️-♾️^♾️ as well as equal to ♾️^♾️+♾️^♾️. Again not a mathematician don’t judge I know there’s a better way to write that but idk the correct symbology. So I guess I’m theorizing that some type of hyper mass is generating a type of hyper gravity which is responsible for the motion we experience as time. Our brains are actually computing at a level where we are processing the totality of this moment ♾️^♾️ the processing is taking place bc hyper gravity is pulling us into the very next moment which is ♾️^♾️-♾️^♾️ we could potentially be gaining memories not by adding one moment into the next but by comparing the totality of this moment to the totality of the moment pier. In other words a memory (if we think about it as being a point or a collect of points) isn’t being stored anywhere but rather our brain is looking at the totality of a moment in time and it’s recognizing the loss of the totality of the most previous moment in time. Like suduko you don’t know which number goes into a space sometimes until you know every number that isn’t in that space. Our brain is processing all the ♾️^♾️ that is being lost (or being pulled away in a different direction) in order to be able to conceptualize the current moment while simultaneously being pulled forward through time to experience the very next moment.

Throw 1 million watches over a waterfall. At the point of impact the watch breaks into its components and all the pieces are visible on the surface of the water for a moment. Soon after some of the component pieces start to sink towards the bottom while others float on the surface. Some of the pieces start floating together on the surface like gears fitting together and start to form a system on the 2d surface. While the “denser” pieces sink to the bottom. Imagine the surface of the water as a filter the denser materials sink and the more buoyant pieces float. Now picture the surface of the water as a piece of paper that is on top of huge stack of papers. Again we drop our watches onto the surface and upon impact with the surface the watch once again breaks into its components but this time imagine that the very next sheet of paper which we can also imagine as a filter can only consist of the pieces that passed through the filter. While the pieces that remained on the first sheet of paper, the first filter, quickly start to come together and form a system within that dimension. The pieces that make it to the second sheet of paper are again filtered by that sheet of paper some pieces remaining and others staying behind but again importantly to note the pieces that make it to the 3rd sheet of paper cannot consist of any piece that has already been filtered by one of the passes two filters. So the “sinking” through the stack of papers is not only creating a system at every “sheet” but it is also becoming its own filter through which any new system passing through will be filtered by! Consciousness is just gravity functioning in higher dimensions! We are literally experiencing being pulled through into the next sheet of paper. Ok so now I’m going to start to hypothesize bc I haven’t given it proper thought yet but given what we know about gravity and please if I simplify this is am sorry I do not know how energy relates to gravity at all I only understand it’s relationship to mass in that more mass equals more gravity. So if gravity is causing the “pull” we experience as time doesn’t that mean there pretty much has to be some kind of mass somewhere like hyper mass or some shit?

Ok but isn't this just assuming that the abstract mathematical relationships best describing the behavior of what we perceive have a reality to them, while the perceptions themselves don't? Since perceptions are undeniably real (irrespective of the fact they are not what they appear to be), but mathematical relationships appear to us as nothing but perceptions, why would one assume they are different from and more fundamental than perceptions? I mean, as a sentient being that brings me into a contradiction: I know the driving experience is real, models are composed of thoughts and all thoughts derive their existence from perceptions, which in turn derive their existence from consciousness, but now I'm supposed to believe that things are different from what they appear to consciousness and the model made out of perceptions is more fundamental than the perceptions themself. I'd have to believe that forever, since the onthological existence of a non-experiential reality inaccessible to consciousness cannot be verified.

What a thoughtful comment, amazing. I agree that the math might just be another extension of our perception. I believe Hoffman responds to this question at the end of his TED talk years ago. My opinion is that formal logic and mathematics likely have the best chance of truly existing beyond our perceptions. But they might just be another symbol system we cooked up to make sense of our world. Useful here though not beyond. Possible, and then I'm reminded of how we've always had to accept the limitations of our tools. And perhaps that's a deeper truth... and then the circle of reasoning continues... Levels, Fid! Thank you!

Please show me where my reasoning is wrong (and it certainly must be or else I’d be smarter than Don which I’m definitely not): isn’t Don trying to explain fundamental reality in terms of its self when he states that our senses / perceptions have an incentive to not see “the truth” (aka reality?) as if reality itself were not the object of investigation in the first place? Meaning, how can we characterize our perceptual world as a function of the very thing we are trying to elucidate? Dunno if I make any sense… please help :)
@Carlos.Explains
@Carlos.Explains Год назад
Hey Boris! Thanks for the thoughtful comment. You bring up a solid point. Don's position is that it doesn't matter what "the truth" actually is. Whatever it may be, evolution by natural selection crafted a user interface (think of this as a VR headset) by which we can interact with a subjective world. Even though our senses can't make this leap, it may be possible using formal logic and evolutionary game theory to prove this.
@undercoveragent9889
@undercoveragent9889 Год назад
@@Carlos.Explains "Don's position is that it doesn't matter what "the truth" actually is." Jaw-dropping; simply astounding. Don opens up by saying that you can get the hang of thinking outside of space and time and personally, whether or not that is true is quite important to me. 'Thinking' is a verb; an _action_ word, right? To 'think' requires some expenditure of some amount of some energy, right? How can thoughts flow if there is no time over which they can flow? Where would they flow _to_ and _from_ if there is no space between the transmitter and the receiver? 'Thinking' is a 'process' and any process must unfold over time - By saying 'I think...' he is implicitly acknowledging the fact that his mind exists in a spacetime environment. The OP is quite right, Don is smuggling in far too many assumptions and you simply refuse to challenge him on any of them. He says he can think outside of space and time so why not ask him; how does one compose ones thoughts without some form of space and time to separate them? I think I know where he has gone wrong: think of a transformer, a device to step voltage up or down. Now, when you apply an alternating current to the primary coil, you create an oscillating magnetic field around it. That oscillating field then induces a voltage in the secondary coil... basically. Well, I would say that the 'transformer' is analogous to the 'universe' and the magnetic field around the coil is analogous to 'consciousness'. And the thing is, you can analyze that magnetic field, map it out as it changes over time, and as long as you understand exactly how the transformer works, theoretically, it would be possible to tease out a lot of information about what is going on at both the input and output of the current that flows in the coils, right? However, where I would say that the existence of the transformer, (the universe), is prerequisite to the existence of the magnetic field, (consciousness), Don is arguing that it is the magnetic field that gives rise to the existence of the transformer. So clearly, if the magnetic field is the force of creation, let's say, the 'transformer' doesn't really matter at all since that same field can create any reality it desires... and Don _does_ desire. But, until he can demonstrate some method by way of which _any_ process of change can occur outside of a spacetime context then I will maintain that you can make a magnetic field from a coil of wire but you can't make a coil of wire from a magnetic field and moreover, the truth of that statement does indeed matter.

@@Carlos.Explains the example of sexual selection that Hoffman provides is really just sensory exploitation. And sensory exploitation often yields runaway dynamics, that is, the secondary sexual trait tends to grow across of range of a variables , for example, luminance, intensity, spatial, frequency, etc. Sensory exploitation ultimately begs the question of why nature would devote so much energy to ornament over and above veridical cognitions? Recall that Hoffmans, original, superficial, not-so-deep insight was that evolution would favor a less costly route. Sensory exploitation proves costly in the long run as do many runaway, evolutionary dynamics. Just think of the great Irish Elks antlers - ever larger and more cumbersome. But sensory exploitation is simply one instance of sexual selection, there are others. Sexual selection has been recast in the image of an adaptationist paradigm , that is, effectively reduced to natural selection, with the theory of costly signaling. According to this theory, the male’s secondary sexual ornament is in fact costly to maintain, and these costs are in effect inimitable, they cannot be easily faked. In other words, the signal is a truthful symptom of a number of behavioral and physiologic qualities sought after by the female. If the male can shoulder the costs required to maintain his sexual ornament he is truly robust andcan by extension resist predation, he can resist parasites, he’s capable of intensive and sustained parental investment, etc. etc. In other words, costly signaling is about the truth: where the female is concerned: Does he truly have the qualities I’m looking for. Where the male is concerned: Look at me! Only a male who is truly robust could generate and sustain this signal. So, clearly we see here an instance in which sexual selection does not devolve into a scenario whereby males blindly track untruths. Rather, the truth is very much at stake.

I say that Donald Hoffman and Nima Arkani-Hamed are full of hooey, and I challenge anyone to argue otherwise. The fact that Hoffman claims to be working on a dynamical aspect to the putatively static Ampltuhedron (and other supposed geometrical structures outside spacetime is LAUGHABLE, because no such structures exist. They are mere conceptual models used to simplify quantum computations. Nima’s Amplituhedron encodes amplitudes (building blocks of probabilities in particle physics) in the “area” of a multi-dimensional analog of a polyhedron (hence, Amplitu-hedron). But there is no such thing as the “the Amplituhedron,” meaning a single monolithic geometric structure outside spacetime that is more fundamental than spacetime. Hence, “the Amplituhedron” is just a concept, which manifests in various amplituhedra, each corresponding to a calculation that one might make. The Amplituhedron’s advantage is that it makes these calculations much simpler. But this hardly makes the Amplituhedron more fundamental or foundational than quantum mechanics or spacetime. Imagine using an abacus as a computational tool and then discovering an electronic calculator that is many times faster. Well, that is an analogy for what Nima has done. And while it’s very commendable, it hardly revolutionizes physics, as he and others contend; but merely simplifies quantum computations.

These are very high risk and very low return niches of science. Money is scarce, and non-tenured faculty are expected to publish or perish, so only those who can afford to not care about the value of their research (tenured faculty) can also afford to pursue interests that are in expectation unyielding and would stop their career dead in its tracks if they still were an assistant professor. This is because or course it is easier to publish on topics that are more easily publishable, and that distribution has its mode around current hype topics.
