This is interesting. I saw the video and liked it - FINALLY someone showed something that the people who aren't affluent can afford and use to have some incredible adventures. Justin didn't say it was the best of the best and didn't say it was for everyone. I recall him being what I thought was very upfront about things. Not everyone can put out $1000.00 for a sleep system and there are other options. But if none of the content creators show this too many people think they need to buy the high end things to go hiking/backpacking. If people don't like Temu or any other retailer they don't need to buy from them. It's that simple. Justin, you are not a sellout or any of the other things your viewer wrote. You didn't sell your soul, nor did you say anything you didn't believe all you did was provide another option for low-end affordable gear. I admire you for doing it. Taking down the vid to appease people that want to dictate what other do and think well . . . I hope you are both reading this. Accepting sponsorship: Do it! There is nothing wrong with it as long as you are up front about being sponsored. Are these people who are complaining about it sending you money to pay the bills and build your channels? You aren't forcing them to buy those products. If you don't like something don't accept that sponsorship. If you don't use the items like the Temu products and tell your viewers it's not for you but it might work for someone else there is nothing wrong with that. How many of the people watching your channel are going to use the products like you do? How many of them are going to do a thru hike? I bet very few. How many people think backpacking is beyond their means because of what they see on RU-vid? I don't hike/backpack but my dream is to do a backpack trip to celebrate turning 70 years old. I already have the majority of what I need since I'm an avid motocamper but if there are things that I need to add I will probably check Temu. Until your video I didn't know they had things like that. I have ordered a couple of things from them and other than it taking longer than say Amazon I was happy with my purchases. Kyle and Justin I enjoy your videos, keep up the great work and get those sponsorships so you can continue to do what you do. One last thing for Kyle: Each time I hear you say "I'm not gonna lie" and you say it a lot my thoughts go to either everything else you have said is a lie and you are now going to tell the the truth or you are lying about not gonna lie. 😁

It’s absurd that you got “push back” for that. RU-vid content creation is a business. If someone wants to pay you to give an honest review of their products, you’re totally within your moral rights to take the paycheck. The only thing I’d say is it if they’re a scummy company, might have been good to research that and make mention of it in a way that’s respectful to both the audience and the company. But screw the haters, keep doing what you’re doing Justin. The content is great overall.

I would agree that outdoor content creators are held to a higher standard, because sustainability and considering something outside of yourself (LNT) are just a core part of the culture. So anything seen as an antithesis to that, probably won’t fly with most in the community. Justin made an honest mistake and I think the humble way he handled it says more about his character than that original misstep. Great pod, thanks to you both!

Kyle-love your stuff, both channels. One thing-I was really interested in what Justin had to say but you did a lot more of the talking than he did. I think he did a great job explaining what happened in the short time you let him talk, but I feel like he didn’t have enough time to really say what he learned and how he would avoid a similar issue in the future. I’m probably wrong here but I think you were uncomfortable with the subject and so (forgive me for this) “ran off at the mouth” a little instead of letting him speak. I’m not saying you need to pin him to the wall and grill him but I personally would have appreciated more of his insight into the situation and aftermath than you allowed him.

I think the entire controversy is a little ridiculous. His video didn’t bother me in the least. Mostly because I have a life and brain outside of what RU-vidrs do on a daily basis.. none of them hung the moon and stars- they are flawed humans just like everyone else so if you see them make a “mistake” keep that in mind. Especially if you are so worried about how others are treated … then you attack someone you claim to like and subscribe to…

The folks that complain about shilling miss the forest for the trees. They complain if someone reviews expensive gear and say "regular folks can't afford this" and if they review cheap gear it's "you know this isn't going to hold up as well". And also gear gets updated, and competition grows. How else am I going to see real world comparisons from 10 different sleeping pads, and how those compare with ten different bags and quilts, and 10 different pillows. THAT'S what people forget. An Amazon review that only speaks to one piece of gear. I like that Justin's reviews talk about a bag or quilt being warm enough IF his pad was warm enough, too.

The materials they sell (especially Plastics, water filters) contain highly problematic chemicals and should not be near your body. You shouldn‘t buy stuff from Temu, Aliexpress or any other no-name source that goes on or in your body. Justin is my favourite outdoor content creator, but Temu is famous in the EU for selling products that are a huge health risk and thus he should know better.

Justin is not the one that was disappointing because of Temu. It is the people that give ill remarks as if they are perfect and never make a mistake. Pay no attention to ill remarks said about you, live so that nobody will believe them. Actions will always prove what is true and Justin (even though he did not have to prove anything to ANYONE) proved his intentions were genuine and honest. Those kind of judgemental people, that give absolute statesments about situations that they barely know absolutely anything about, do not need to be...never mind. Just my two cents.

I think the Temu video concept was interesting. However I understand why people would be disappointed. For backpacking content creators, I think they are criticized so much more. They get criticized if they rate videos at home versus on a backpacking trip. People question if they are rating products to get money versus actually using them on multiple trips. Dixie constantly has to remind people that she always buys the gear and doesn't accept money for reviews. Yet people keep questioning that. Justin, don't let anyone silence you. Your voice, experiences and expertise are valuable. Keep shining bright.
@Goingmyownway
@Goingmyownway 3 месяца назад
My issue was the products were clearly low quality, fit poorly, and just seemed randomly cobbled together. Recommending your audience buy something important like a water filter or sleeping bag of unknown quality and origin to save a couple bucks could be dangerous. If he was looking at smaller items that don't matter if they're generic, like backpacking pillows, camp shoes, air pumps, accessories etc then it might've been better.
@juliadawn33
@juliadawn33 3 месяца назад
I can see where people are coming from with Temu. It does have controversy surrounding it. The thing is I appreciate for example videos that compare really good quality backpacking and camping gear vs the cheaper stuff people might go out and buy because it's affordable. Showcasing what makes something better quality and why it might last longer and save someone money in the long run. Even offering a discount code for more expensive quality brands to help bring the cost down a bit if that is possible. I think it's good for people to see a comparison and get recommendations for good quality brands. So I can see where that concept might work. But I think companies like SHEIN and Temu do have controversy and people get opinionated about them.

I plead guilty. I have ordered a few things from Temu but must say I have been completely satisfied with all but one purchase. However, it does require diligence in reading the description. If the description is not clear, steer clear. Who else can us noobs and monetarily challenged people rely on for honest opinions on affordable gear than those experienced enough to provide advice. Almost all content I view regarding such gear would require a huge investment in an activity some folks are not sure they will stick with. I respect gear reviewers who provide honest takes on equipment if from the start they reveal a disclaimer.

I am in a different niche, but Temu has the same stigma in my community too. There are those who love it, the "value" in the products but there are others who look at what cost does that value come... TOTAL fan. Guess I've been lucky. Yup. The mosquito tent is a must in Hawaii😁 That said, I've been perusing camping stuff.. hammocks, solar charging pads, personal cooking products, .. the last week, how ironic. Some friends RAG on TEMU (and they've never purchased one iota! 😢) Little do they know I'm dressed head to toe (wow, sister, love your pants!), got my sh!t all in this unbelievably cool duffle like bag (OMG, their bags/duffles/etc are bomb, but it may be my taste and time spent comparing vendors), and have racked my camping gear on metal shelving units purchased through TEMU. I just bought about 8 of those suckers cuz _you AIN'T gonna find it cheaper as you don't need to spend time driving nor money ON GAS_ and Home Depot/City Mill/Lowe's can kiss my okole with their prices. One bummer, you need to be on the mainland to get some of the deals because they ain't shipping to HI. DON'T LET SOME SUBS RUIN IT FOR OTHERS ... TEMU has deals and most have not disappointed!!! And they have return policies!!!! I WILL TESTIFY TO THEIR BUSINESS ACUMEN🤙🏽♥️

Justin’s sponsorships of crap products (for me it was flextail) is why I unsubscribed from him. I used to really like his channel when he’d go backpacking in the winter and did other things. I trusted his gear recommendations as a result of him doing those things. The reason why I hold channels like his to a higher standard is that his channel is now about gear, and if he’s pushing crap products for money then it ruins the trust.

IF Temu was worth getting mad over its that worthless quality gear that's the quality content seeing someone go through the suffering of bureaucratic driven "quality" design not actually for use in environments just for show. Blame is on the company that can get away with selling garbage and calling it reliable for its price point and then people defending garbage and not having any skill in telling a difference.

@Im_With_Stupid 3 месяца назад
@@edwardbenton4428 No, they don't. There are good factories in the Asian world and there are bad ones and when it comes to high end brands they're typically not using the bad ones or using factories that source bulk materials from them. All factories, whether they're in China or Korea or Vietnam or Thailand or Pakistan, don't use child labor. They don't all use live plucked down and they don't all make poor fabrics with low penetration waterproofing and inconsistent hydrostatic head ratings. The companies who *do* use these factories are the companies who sell $50 tents on Temu that are "just like an MSR tent".
@edwardbenton4428
@edwardbenton4428 3 месяца назад
@Im_With_Stupid your wrong. The the high end brands buy from same place as the low end brands. The high end are looking for top dollar. A company can claim anything. There's no one tell what they really do. Ethical down...I don't believe there is any such thing as ethical down. Don't buy down, that's ethical.
@Im_With_Stupid
@Im_With_Stupid 3 месяца назад
@@edwardbenton4428 No, I'm not wrong at all. Premium brands have a premium brand mark up, for sure, a portion of which goes into research and development of new materials and designs, but they also use better quality materials in their construction and stricter quality control, which is very expensive, while the hallmark of Cheap Temu tents is a knock off of a design someone else invested in bringing to market with low penetration waterproofing that's shot in a year and loose threads hanging everywhere because they ship everything that isn't falling apart on the factory floor. A cheap Temu tent *might* be made in the same factory as a Big Agnes or MSR tent, but that in no way means the materials or where they come from are the same. You do understand that material suppliers have an array of various quality levels, correct? Of course you do and that means someone is buying materials of various quality, so who is buying it and what is it being used for? Some companies even have proprietary fabrics that are custom made only for them, e.g., Nemo's OSMO fabric. If you actually had experience with premium brand gear you would know it's not the same simply by the feel of the materials, thread weight, stitching and zipper quality, etc. Your personal opinions on down are irrelevant, but surely you won't disagree that live plucking, which is where the down in those cheap down sleeping bags comes from, is far more unethical than sourcing down from ducks and geese that were slaughtered beforehand for their meat and weren't force fed or pumped full of hormones while they were alive to increase the amount and loft. Or does all down come from the same place and is harvested in the same way, too?
