Hey there, how long did it take you to replace the lower manifold gasket? I am going to attempt this, it seems I have to remove the compressor, ps pump and alternator?? 5.7L express 1997

@@expressvanlife1859 it took me awhile because I did it in 20 degree weather. The ac compressor can come out and lay to the side just dont disconnect the gas lines. The air intake snorkel has to come out of course. I took out the alternator bracket loosely not all the way. Power steering you dont have to remove. Radiator hose and then everything else is pretty much self explanatory. Do yourself a favor and buy lots of throttle body cleaner, and rags as you will find nice carbon deposits. Being that this job is a pain in the butt because of space, I’ve done it twice in my vans life, last time before this recent change was back in 2010, so i didnt want to take chances and replaced he spider injection. If you have the original spider and its fine it will eventually get clogged or stuck open. Another tip is label all your plug wires although firing order is easy fue to the style cap. Clock and MARK the distributor against the intake manifold with a scribe tool AND disconnect your battery take the distributor cap off and take a pic of where the rotor is pointing. I would inspect the distributor for wear if it has play it can fail. Original ones were really bad. There is a diagram online on how to insert the fuel line o rings they dont just go in any order. Carefully torque everything upper and lower manifolds. Use oil around the large fuel injection connector seal or it can get damaged as you sit it in place. I also changed the valve cover gaskets. I just didnt want to work on the engine anymore after sealing everything up. Pay attention to the egr now its a good time to remove it and clan any carbon deposit off it but DONT spray cleaner while the EGR is hole are facing up(motor down) the cleaner can go into the motor windings and damage something. I changed the pcv valve. Upper intake gaskets New thermostat and gasket Fuel filter is really a must with new injectors if you change them. For the throttle body i removed it and throughly cleaned it out with cleaner. Remember at the back of the lower manifold to make the bead of silicone and front as well. Do not turn the engine if distributor is not in place. You have to put the distributor same position it came out. If not an engine light will be set and you beed a scanner or get a distributor cap cut a hole, run the engine to around 1100 RPM and watch until the spark jumping i short there are you tube videos. Dont lose the clip that holds the throttle cabling its a small clip but that can slow you down in putting and driving back the van. Check your throttle cable make sure it goes in and out freely. Mine broke once while in the highway. On the EGR tube that goes to your exhaust manifold, dont try and disconnect it from the intake manifold , instead, do it by the nut next to the exhaust much easier.. for me at least. Highly recommend get a new fuel injection system and get a good one there are many made in china i bought the “Standard” brand. Probably all made by the same company in China but gives some peace of mind i guess?! Change your engine oil as you will be cleaning the intake valley area and cleaner will go in the engine and dilute the engine oil. I like using sea-foam it works great. For the stubborn stuff i used a pressure washer and then dried it with compressed air. Everything looked new! Oh yes since its your first time, take pics of the upper intake bolts and their positions u will thank me later some only go in certain places like the purge solenoid valve or the ignition coil. To summarize the job is not bad at all to be honest biggest pain for me was cleaning every thing if you have a friend that has a parts washer that would help you or a media blaster. Slide your front seats all the way back or some people remove them. This way you can lay on your stomach. I figure it should take you to get everything out maybe three-five hours. Dont tighten any of them until you've started all of them by hand . if you tighten some completely before installing all of them youll find you cant fit some
