Here are some of the tools that jimthecarguy uses www.amazon.com/shop/jimthecarguy To diagnose a antifreeze leak and replace a water pump on a 2006 Chevy Express Van 3500 with a 4.8 liter engine.
After saying I would never take this on I did in fact do it myself a few days ago. It really wasn't all that bad. My local repair shop wanted something like $1,200 to do this, so that was certainly motivation for me. One thing I will add here is when you go to fill the system make sure you fill through the upper radiator hose, and not just through the radiator or you will more than likely get trapped air in the system and the vehicle will overheat. And of course make sure the cap is off while filling through the upper radiator hose. After running the engine and letting it cool I still had to top off with about 16 oz. It's surprising how much air gets trapped in the system. Great video!
You are a legend before you were even born The best tool is just pliers to get the clamps off but these type of vans there is no easy way to get to the components everything is so crowded together Good photography
Hey I give you a lot of credit for that pain in the ass job. My hands would have been ripped to shreds by the time I was done with that. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
+Tom Sommer Thank you.Ya it was a little more difficult than i initially thought and my hand did take a beating. Not to mention that I had to do a lot of editing cutting out the 4 letter words.Lol
i dont mean to be offtopic but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account?? I somehow forgot the password. I would love any tips you can give me
@Everett Rory thanks so much for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Nice job again Jim. Question ? - what can I dab on a surface to hold a gasket in place until the part is snugged up ? I've used a couple small dabs of grease...Is it ok or what do you suggest ?
+steveg5576 You can buy an adhesive in the parts store that will hold the gasket in place or you can do what I do use a small amount of weather strip or emblem adhesive .It work's great.
Thanks for taking the time to post this. Much appreciated. Is the thermostat located in that housing on the pump? Can't seem to find any info on this anywhere. Thanks again.
Depends on your year/model. I have a 2000 2500 4.3L and my thermostat is located on top of my engine on passenger side. Slightly above and behind the waterpump. But not on waterpump.
+Leonard Ralph Yes if I used a rebuilt pump it would have been rebuilt but in this case the owner requested a new pump. There for no exchange .Thanks for watching and your input.Jim
Been working on this for over 3 hours - the bolt at 16:15 that connects the fan to the pump won't move. Used wD40, clamp, wrench and hammer. It's stuck on tight and I've got to be at work in the AM! Advice? Thinking I might torch it. I have it all removed from the van now. 🙈🤔
jimthecarguy Fixed! So what I did was drill small holes on the bolt near the pump. Sawed off the bolt (easy) and just bought a new clutch. Fan was fine. Clutch was about $50 and I just used the fan I had. I can't believe how hard it was to remove. Even the tool wouldn't get it off. Thanks for following up! It means a lot!!
I got coolant leaking from the over flow tank drain hose what can cause that problem also near the end transmission there is another drain and it's also leaking like it's over pressurized
I had the same issue for the last 2 years. I couldn't fingered out. What was the deal. I had to keep an eye on re filling it every month. Now is starting to get cold. And the pulley that is attached to the water pump it self broke came loose. My van over heated. Big time. I drove it about 20 miles. I will change the water pump tomorrow. Hopefully I didn't blow the head gasket. Did you ever figured out what was the problem??
Excellent video, thank you. I have a 2008 Chevy express van that i'm now noticing that when ever i park it after driving it i'm now seeing what looks like anti freeze. So far it's not dripping alot, only i little at a time. I suspect that i'm going to have to replace my pump in short order because it only can be from the pump base on your video.
I change my water pump today. The guy who change it for me had a problem installing the fan onto the pump because the threads were cross, he had to actually cut the threads so it could work.
Well.... Ive been in and out of my 01 countless times. I have been looking for some kind of way to get the upper shroud off without the majorr brawl I have with it every time. The AC line goes right over the top. Yo have to be brutal to the line to get the clearance. It doesnt matter if you rotate it, take the fan off, try to be gentle. I was hoping to find a better way. I noticed that ALL the videos skip over that part. I bet its because people dont want to film the fight they must have with it. Discharging the system just seems like a lot for radiator/water pump/ alt/ etc.. repairs
After years of fiddling, i throw a piece of cardboard in front of radiator, and gently pull/twist/cuss/complain and slide it free. Never tried removing filler tube. Patience is the key. May have to try filler hose removal just in case it's faster.
Hi Jim, watching you do this job, wow, what a tight spot, and what pain. I sure miss the old days, A water pump was generally pretty easy, not so much anymore. I have 2 questions fer ya, 1. How long have you been in business? 2. What do you think of dexcool antifreeze? Thanks
+joel mccoin Hi good question .I've been in business almost 40 years. For 17 years I had An Exxon station witch I might add was a Ok in the beginning but after about 10 years it was a Honorable company to have a franchise with. With them you were just a number no personal connection just business. As for Dex cool I just use what the manufacture recommends.Jim
