This was a joint development between ExpressLRS, Joshua Bardwell, ItsBlunty, Mads Tech, and RC Video Reviews. Having your input during the design process was integral to getting it done right the first time and I am really happy with how it works now thanks to all the valuable suggestions!
Its funny how different people have different experiences with ExpresLrs binding. Personally I LOVE the binding phrase method. I have lots of quads and they all work seamlessly with both my transmitter controllers. So much better and easier than back in the day when I had to struggle with the FlySky and FRSky receivers and all their peculiarities.
yeah ok.....I cant get my new AIO FC to bind...I even put in the binding phrase in my RX and TX. I press the bind button on my FC and on my TX...Nothing.......This hobby is seriously frustrating....No reason for this to be this hard. Screw the cheap open source BS from Beta FPV or anyone. I'm going DJI next.
@XBLHAX I did get an ELRS AIO FC that the built in receiver wouldn't update so wouldn't take bind phrase. I had company send me new FC. I even have UART usb and solder that still didn't work

I've found elrs to be ultra easy to bind too with just the bind phrase and being on the same version. I honestly don't know why people have so much difficulty. I've even had a really easy time with spi receivers.
Yayyyyy. Personally, I just rewatched your videos on binding a few times. I love the three plug method for binding. I know if it does not work the receiver is on a mismatch firmware major version . I think sometimes people just want something to complain about. Either way progress is always good.
Thanks for a great video! Using the button for other features like Flashing, WiFi-mode, etc makes more sense than binding phrases in my opinion. Setting a binding phrase is so much easier to do while the quad is on the bench, and prevents fumbling with binding in the field. But yeah, it's great to know that the feature is available, and that the receiver takes the binding phrase afterwards! :)
I’m glad for people that like it but I thought the phrase was so much better. I always had bond issues from timing to cheap buttons and hard to reach buttons.
I think this will be great for our surface buddies joining the fold. Bind buttons are way better than bind plugs and now there’s a few different ways to bind people can just pick their favourite method.

This sounds like a great thing. When I got my second ELRS drone I had a heck of a time remembering what I'd used for a binding phrase. This would have made it so much easier getting the new quad bond!
I have been flying fixed wing FPV since before the term was coined, but avoided ELRS out of sheer irritation with the geeky binding procedures. Not that I can't cope with them, I simply refuse to. Thank you for contributing to this, it will convert me.
Not difficult. Unnecessary. Poodles jump through hoops simply because they're proud they can do it, but humans should have the cognitive capacity to ask why.
This sounds interesting: Do you mean you can flash a bind phrase onto the tx module once, and then take any rx out of the box and fly it without doing anything to it at all? I suspect you have to go through a flashing procedure to avoid the single button press. Please tell me I'm wrong.
I bought several ELRS receivers and a Tx module a few months ago, and so far, I love them. Yes, initially, I had a few issues with binding, but after reading a bit, it was all good. JB's reviews got me to give them a whirl, and so far, I've been impressed with them. The one thing I would like to see is a 1S PPM receiver to use with ultra light fixed wing indoor models. If anyone knows of a 1S PPM ELRS receiver, let me know.
I think the future was the binding phrase. The button seems to be very old school. Finding the button when the RX is tucked into the stack somewhere or attached to a tiny frame was much more frustrating in my experience.
Personally I’ll never use the bind button as I think the bind phrase is the future and actually easier especially if you have multiple drones you’ll build and can just flash the phrase over wifi. But I’m glad they are catering for everyone else who wants to do things the familiar way 😎
The problem I've had was finding a reliable receiver and it took a couple FC swaps to determine that it was the receiver that wouldn't operate a beeper. So I bought another receiver and its been at least a year and a half since I flown because I saw the video about the only one in five manufacturers make their's reliable. I'm wondering if my replacement is the brand that is reliable. It's the hardware that is funky and the process just makes more hoops to jump through.
I honestly I don't see why people have such a hard time with binding express lrs since day one I have always use the binding phrase I've never once changed the phrase and I only use one controller so it's simple I just when I flash it I said The Binding phrase and I power it up and I'm done I don't understand how people always had issues
You never had issues because, as you said, "since day one I have always use the binding phrase I've never once changed the phrase and I only use one controller". There are other scenarios where other options make sense. More flexible binding is a good thing.
Hi Joshua, not sure about the value of that additional functionality... putting a binding phrase via the configurator or gui is pretty streight forward. Not sure why there is confusion about it. Easily done and no fiddleling around in a quad where the receiver might be not accessible easily. You do it once to all your quads/receivers and that's it... not sure who might have the need to update /change it once set.
Im at a loss... who finds elrs binding complicated? 😅 In Fact, you dont even need to bind elrs receivers, theyre bound by itself. Flash latest Firmware with bind phrase and all done. IN FACT the flashing procedure is easier than any other protocol out there 😂 I really dont get it. I personally find bind buttons much more complicated, which button first? What does it do when what happens? Beeping? Did it already bind? Elrs is just simple, straight forward and logical as it is.
This will be great when the updated version comes on the RXes out of the box. until then it doesn't really matter as you're gonna need to flash the RX to get up to this version anyways. What's the next ELRS 'innovation', OTA update of the RX? :)
Hi Joshua. I was wondering. We are in 2024 obviously. I have no clear thought what is the best goggles for the new year. What is you're thought for the new year? Not sure if things have changed for goggles. I have bought used for $120 for Fat Shark Scout and will see with it if I love fpv. Hope you can do a updated 2024 advice of goggles. :) Ty for you're awesome video's. Ty for you're effort of helping us all.
If you want the best goggles go get yourself DJI goggles 2 as of now. Easy to setup, easy bind, best video feed hands down and you can skip configuring an ELRS/Crossfire rx cuz it comes with one (but I do recommend installing one of the 2 I mention cuz I’ve had my signal drop randomly from the built-in rx in the DJI air units).

Funny (actually ironic) story.... Ive been a long time Crossfire holdout , mostly because I own a lot of receivers. Well, this weekend I hit a wall and I'm swapping everything out for ELRS. Why you ask? Because I can't frigging get the crossfire receivers to bind and, if they do, either the lua options or the telemetry range ducks on some with the new firmware and same settings, but not all receivers, just the ones that I look in the eye. Does crossfire just work? Not any more.
I don't get what the issue is with the binding phrase. The first thing I do with a new transmitter or receiver is update the firmware and set the binding phrase, then it's all ready to use.
I pushed the "bind" button on my first ELRS drone, Newbeedrone Hummingbird V3 bound to my Radiomaster Pocket. That was at Christmas time. Did they do something special with it?
I can't believe that dev time was spent on this, when there are so many other cool features that the devs are busy with. Good example of the customer not always being right.
@@JoshuaBardwell yeah but now they are missing out on a whole bunch of other features that ELRS has to offer. They just think the remote binds and that's all there is to it. I was into RC cars for many years, binding button was all we had with simple electronics. When I got my first quad about a year ago, i took me all of 5 mins to open a browser and figure out how to do the whole bind phrase. I remember thinking at the time how revolutionary the bind phrase and Wifi configuration was, so many possibilities compared to being limited to the interface of a simple bind button. People think they want a bind button, but in the end it's just going to add more adoption roadblocks. in my humble opinion ofcourse :)
Honnestly not having tonuse a bind button is a major upgrade for me because half my receivers are stucked into my tiny f3f glider fuselages. I dont' need to dismantle everything. First rhe pass phrase and if i want to chnage that i just power without radio on wait a linite then go into the web interface. But for me button woule be a pain in the ass
What I hope is a way to enter the binding phrase for a model directly into the EdgeTx GUI. Instead of having a biding phrase per TX, a binding phrase per model would ease lending a drone or using a group of drones between different users at any time without having to trigger the lending procedure or having to trigger Wifi mode. May be some day ? Anyway great thanks to the amazing dev community !
@@JoshuaBardwell I often fly drones with my son, and it would be the same within a club sharing rc models: we charge lipos and then go in the garden and switch drones from one TX to the other. Why having to press anything if, in the model definition in EdgeTx we could have a per-model binding phrase ? Then we wouldn't have to press any button, all TX would share the same model definition, a guy flies a model, pass it to the next, etc. Often buttons are hard to reach. There are many FC with an embedded ELRS RX but having no button, etc. The binding phrase mechanism is brilliant, but having to flash a TX just to change the biden phrase is not and if we can completely get rid of buttons that would be nice.
off topic : I'm wondering if there is a fpv camera/goggle system that can give viewer the perspective as if you were sitting in the drone. which could add to realism ?

The main reason they added that forget binding on power-off is they probably know a couple cinema guys who wanted this feature really badly and it was easy to implement once the easy rebind logic was there for regular binding.
Great information. If I update to ELRS 3.4, I think I have to flash all my existing 3.3 receivers to 3.4, right? The transmitter and receivers need the same version I think.
I thought about dusting off my fleet.. I've been out so long my radio is an underground Nirvana with a micro tbs module... V1😮 DJI goggles with analog module any how as I look at getting back in the air obviously I'd want to update to lrs but the hassle has kept my away I don't have enough room in my brain for more information beta flight and everything else... Don’t even need a button. Never even used ELRS configurator. Just pulled a new whoop out of the box last night, connected to betaflight, set bindphrase, pressed bind in betaflight…. Done in 30 seconds. Blunty says you don’t even need to press the bind button in betaflight. Just the phrase.
And then they will complain the bindbutton doesn't work because they haven't checked that the versions TX/RX match. So they have to update anyway and then they will put in the pass phrase and the bindbutton is just a pointless complication. Some people will argue for a standardized communication protocol that will never be modified between the versions and the development goes dead...
Will stick to 3.3 for now, till they make that Option 7, as a Selection/Tick Box when updating the Firmware. of the RX. That is really an odd and scary option to have done automatically.
all of that just kinda washed over me so i'll say what i want it to be like and you tell me if it is this way i want the drone to have a binding phrase that autoconnects to any controller actively sending that binding phrase (not in firmware, in software so it can be tied to a model) and i want it to have a bind button that will transmit the binding phrase to any controller listening so i can make a model that will remember it
i think that covers all bases, its perhaps a bit insecure, transmitting the binding phrase means anyone could take over at any later time, but its more useful and easier to get if you've forgotten it than going into wifi mode, or you're sharing your drone with a colleague that might need to use it quite frequently but might not have needed to until an important shoot day or doesn't have a model for each drone

Quick question. If I set a bind phrase in my Transmitter and not in my Receiver. If I start the bind process by powering the Rx/Quad 3 times (not the 2 second button press you mentioned) , will my transmitter Send and program the bind phrase into the Receiver??
Yes. Binding is always the process of copying the UID (bind phrase) from the transmitter to the receiver. You can manually type in the bind phrase. Or you can use the 3-plug. Or you can (now) use the bind button. However you do it, it doesn't matter. The UID is copied from TX to RX.
7:41 you know, I *do* consider myself to be a “tech nerd” (maybe not “super”). AND YET. I find ExpressLRS annoying to the point of distraction. Like, every single thing I do, I find myself thinking “why did they do it THIS way?!” For just about everything I want to do with it, this system feels like they deliberately figured out the least intuitive and most obnoxious way to do it, almost like they don’t *want* you to figure it out. So kudos to them, this ONE TIME, for actually making things easier.
i got the RP3 and when I power it up i get solid red light, cant get wifi, button does nothing. basically rubbish i cant even use it - no way to flash it at all. force me to buy the rp4 to try again.
Does the bind button transfer the binding phrase UID from the TX to the RX when executed? So if I have 2 transmitters with the same phrase will button-bind on the first transmitter just work for the second transmitter without having to bind a second time?
Yes. All binding methods do that. That's essentially what binding is. It copies the UID from the TX to the RX. No matter whether you do 3-plug or button or whatever, it copies the UID from the TX. So if you have two TX with identical UID, binding to one will also bind to the 2nd.
Hello Mr. Bard well this isn’t related to video I have a question if you could help me with a task. I bought a babyhawk r 3 in. I have a newer version of beta flight and I have no idea how to download a older version I have looked up and tried to download it and I just don’t know what I’m doing plz help me the person who had the drone has it setup way to much for me.
If you go to the Betaflight Configurator github page, then go to Releases, you can scroll back in the Releases to find older versions. Unfortunately it seems you have to manually scroll back to find the one you want. There doesn't seem to be any index of versions to quickly click to the one you want. At least not as far as I can find.
Need help MT12, ELRS, I have one speed boat and it flips upside down and I have a recovery boat to go get the speed boat. How do I switch between the receivers?
On the happymodel and quite a few others. It’s the “unused” pad immediately beside your ground. The pad is labeled as BOOT on most others that are in a different location. Short to ground, is your “button” Most of the ultra tiny receivers don’t have space for a physical button, but the few times I have actually needed it I just used a piece of wire.
JB - BF 4.5 has been out I think for awhile and I see no real tutorials or reviews from any of the big channels on the new version of GPS rescue other than talking about it arriving - hint hint.
Does this mean that I will finally get the option to change the wifi hotspot password? I was told that the ability to reset the receiver was needed before they could add the ability to change the password.

I own an analog goggle and then I bought HD zero drone I figure it's a wrong mix and match so I bought DJI goggles then I found out digital and HD 0 I should have done some research at this point I own 5 drones 2 goggles 2 controllers it's been a year and a half The only thing that I got to fly it's an emax drone which flew away That's a whole different story. why can't they just make it simple enough for slow people like me to get it. after watching so many videos I still feel dumb as a rock. I have a conspiracy theory I think Joshua is the reason they make it so difficult so he can juice out some content 😂 Should I just give up should I keep on buying?
Thank god. I have watched every tutorial, followed every direction to a T and have NEVER had a smooth updating and binding process for ELRS. 6 quads. I spent more time trying to update and bind ELRS than I spent building them. I have one quad that I’ve given up on for the time being. F it. It’s not worth the time. Every time it’s like this. Radiometer boxer ELRS, happy model Rx, radiometer Rx, SPI AIO receivers, you name it. And I’m no programmer but I’m also not a Luddite. UGH
I hate bind buttons! My receivers are nearly all burried in the main wing. As long as all works safely as before ( rebind in the air) , I don´t care. But, more gimmicks, more issues.
Im still flying frsky because i want no part of ELRS. I have 1 RTF kit thats elrs. Ill just use the crap radio it comes with instead of my T16s mk2 because of how complicated ELRS is. The problem is manufacturers are selling less frsky drones because ELRS is better.
I just don't get it? ELRS has been the easiest and most user friendly equipment I've dealt with in RC. Air or ground. The gripe I always see is its so hard to bind blah blah etc etc. Too many ways to bind and it's so confusing cry cry. So now we have added another (4th?) method to bind, added more difficulty potential and places to confuse people and now everyone is happy and it's easier because it's has even more options than before? People are weird lol.
Well, we can tell the FAA they can end the regulations of drones. You have to be a software engineer to bind ELRS, lol. Normal people dont have time for that. Its over complicated for no reason lol.
If you have an ELRS receiver and transmitter they should just bind. No safe words or matching firmware. I dont have to flash the current betaflight version to my drones to use betaflight. I just cant use new features. Not over complicated like ELRS.
This pretty much is the case today. Very few, if any, manufacturers are still shipping receivers with ELRS 2.x on them. Any RX you buy should easily bind to any module.
@JoshuaBardwell I'm going to have to learn eventually. Everyone is moving to elrs and digital video. I'm sure elrs will get easier. It's just a pain for noobs like me lol.
