In my humble opinion, as painful as it may be as an Aussie, Sir Richard Hadlee was arguably the best fast bowler the world has seen. He was also one of the greatest all rounders.
Certainly deserves to be in the conversation. His run in and wind up for the delivery was something to behold, so efficient. As youngsters, we all tried to bowl like him..
@@kaushikdas4606 Sir, he was a complete fast bowler. He didn't have the lightening speed of Marshall, Waqar and Roberts. He had guile deceptively quick. He was unplayable many times like against Australia in a test match where he took 9/52 in a test innings
"the corridor of uncertainty" Hadlee mastered that better than anyone. He was my hero growing up. Read 'Hadlee on Cricket' numerous times as a kid. He presented me with a certificate at school when I was 16. Happy days.
I watched Hadlee bowl Geoff Boycott out for a duck in the 80’s - Nottinghamshire vs Yorkshire. It was magnificent. My Yorkshire uncles (who took me to the match) were not pleased. As a Notts boy Hadlee was my idol. Happy times.
No, Maikel Holding. Greatest Action of all time. Holding was an ARTIST. Hadlee was a bowling Computer. Finest Line Length And most Accurate. He was able to eliminate a Chouk Mark on the pitch by his accuracy.
Cricket lovers from all nations often speak of Dennis Lillee's grace and fluidity in delivery; Sir Richard Hadlee's action IMHO is smoother and more graceful.
Right he has amazing bowling record all over the World 17 in Australia 24 in England 22 in india 27 in west indies 16 in Srilanka Except Pakistan he has amazing bowling record In Pakistan his avg is 44 butehr cover this with his batting there His batting avg is 56 in Pakistan He is so underrated, his bowling record around the globe in different condition is better than other allorunder at that time Imran, kapil, Botham Even his stats is competitive to marshal, robert, Garner, lille etc.. plus his batting avg also good at down the order He and shaun Pollock are so under rates
Fun fact - Hadlee described to Richie Benaud in an interview that he was a massive Dennis Lillee fan and would often think to himself in a tough situation - "What would Lillee do?"
Sir Richard Hadlee was a lone Warrior for the Kiwis in test cricket throughout his career, his bowling action is excellent, used to watch his videos throughRU-vid to reconcile his playing days.
431 Wickets in only 86 test matches at an average of 22.29 with 36 5-wicket hauls and 9 10-wicket hauls! What a phenomenal strike rate and record from a truly great bowler!
This video is first time i watched. Sir Richard Hadlee took 5 wickets. This match was played in 1987. But i was born in 1995. I saw the NZ crowd. They were in very happy moment. During my school times i don't like Australia in Cricket. New Zealand is one of my favourite Cricket team. I really enjoyed this video. My favourite international cricket teams: 1. England 🇬🇧 2. New Zealand 🇳🇿 3. India 🇮🇳
This was the greatest biased finish in Test Match History Hadlee bowled the Whole Session unchanged & Danny Morrison got the plumbest LBW in history in the penultimate over & is not given out absolute robbery!Hadlee was exhausted by the end & that was the Start of Australia’s campaign to winning Cricket again they hadn’t won a series for like 3 years this was the first because of Umpiring then they won the 1987 World Cup & 1989 Ashes in England
As a kiwi , we robbed the WI in NZ with the worst umpiring imaginable . My dad and pop walked out they were that disgusted in the terrible , no actually woeful series victory against the mighty WI . To this day I still cant believe it happened .
Hadlee played mainly in Australia & New Zealand with few overseas tours where as Roberts bowled in all test playing countries during his era & bowled on all types of wicket. Besides, he had to face intensified competition from his legendary team lmates like Holding, Garner, Marshall etc. Hadlee was the main strike bowler mildly supported by Chatfield, Lans Cairns etc. As a result he had a better opportunity to take wicket compared to Roberts. Therefore, Roberts was better than him in terms of bowling on all types of pitch. Hadlee bowled on pitches only famous for bounce & swing but Roberts bowled successfully on fast, slow, spinning all types of track. This proves his superiority.
An exciting series. Adelaide was a qn avalanche of runs. Brisbane was a comprehensive win. Melbourne was edge of your seat stuff. NZ were unlucky not to get the umpire calls at the death, but it was Australia's first series win since Pakistan in 83/84.
As a kid sitting on the Hill at the SCGin the 80s Year after Year Hearing Hadlees a Wanker over and over.So Shitty that he wasn't an Aussie and the Best Cricketer going around,What a Player the BEST.
Bowling in India, Hadlee’s average was better than bowling at home. 22.22- 6 matches bowled in 10 innings. Took 31 wickets. Best bowling of 6/49 and 10/88 in a match. Shame is that NZ did not tour India frequently in those days.
In the entire subcontinent (India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka), he has taken 68 wickets in 13 tests at an average of 21.5. One of the greatest if not the best.
Except Pakistan he had amazing bowling record all around the globe In Pakistan his avg is 44 , when he played in. Their early days 1976 His record is not good in Pakistan but he cover it with this batting there , his batting avg is 56 in Pakistan
@@vir7070they are similar for sure but I think Naseem is more like lillee. All 3 have fantastic actions at the very least. Don’t write naseem off. I’m Aussie and I think once he develops he could be very good
Amazing cricketer, but he stated that out of the 4 all rounders, Kapil , Hadlee, imran and Botham, Hadlee rated imran as the best as a bowler and allrounder
So what did they think when Michael Holding kicked the stumps down? What did they think when Colin Croft shouldered barged umpire Fred Goodall in the worst display ever witnessed in a test match he should of been banned for years disgusting
No doubt,Hadlee was great bowler but the decision taken by umpires on that time for lbw were under doubt..since there were no system to recheck hence many innocent batsmen those were not out were given out... Similarly system of run out at that time was depend on the mercy of umpires..
If anything umpires tended to err on the side of caution, giving stuff not out when these days it would be shown to be out. Makes Hadlee’s record, and that of other bowlers of that era, even more impressive.
Aussie umpires tended to favour the Aussie unless plumb middle stump, but these were still out but more hitting leg stump which is unusual in the fact it was against Aussie batters. But the commentators agreed they were out😊 so not sure on what basis you say they weren't out
Hadlee and Lillee were greats only in Australia and England, otherwise they were below average. When Hadlee saw destruction of his hero Lillee in Pakistan, he started skipping tours to Pakistan. hehe
@@riyazahmed208 All fast bowlers who bowled well in India hav poor records in Pakistan, except Marshall, Walsh and McGrath. Hadlee, Lillee, Donald cudnt do anything in Pakistan lol
@@aarifboy Richard hadlee was superb everywhere in the world on every pitch even Pakistani batsmen found it difficult to play him except javed miandad . He could get any batsman out on his day on any wicket . I rate him better than marshall and donald and walsh. Also , in 1988indian batting lineup had only two world class batsmen vengsarkar and azharuddin. There was no tendulkar no gavaskar . Srikkanth could not play hadlee well.India won the series 2-1 in one match vegsarkar topscored with 101 and india won. In one low scoring test at hyderabad azhariddin top scored with 82 and india won. One test was won by newzealand where hadlee was man of the match. Overall best bowler of series was hadlee but series was won by India under dilip vengsarkars captaincy. Even in odis hadlee was best bowler but india won the series. This is the series where in one odi hadlee was injured. Azharuddin made use of this opportunity and coming at number 6 scored worlds fastest odi century and india won in baroda. Vengsarkar was retained as captain after this tour but Richard Hadlee achieved greatness for being the most difficult fast bowler to face on indian wickets.
That’s because the highlights give no idea of how extraordinarily consistent he was. His greatness was down to giving the batsmen absolutely no respite. You’d get the same impression with McGrath. I love Anderson, but I’d put him below Hadlee.
Someone like Anderson u r kidding he played 17 years but only played like 85 Tests 431 wickets bro how many tests did Anderson play twice as many if not more plus & most of all how many Wickets away from home did Mr Anderson get Hadlee got plenty bro in 3 Tests in Australia not at home he 35 wickets at like an average of 15
Peter Sleep walked on an lbw. Today in the ‘spirt if the game’ batsmen edge the ball and don’t walk, or they walk out of their crease get stumped and don’t walk. Have to say it’s a game of thugs now not gentlemen.
