This was so hard to watch at the time. Utterly dominated. English we’re fantastic. Very hard for a kiwi, but you gotta acknowledge England just being fucken superb
I've watched this whole game more than once and yes England were very good. But I have seen the All Blacks take much bigger hidings than this and come back and win the game. It is definitely one of their strengths to let the opposition wear themselves out against them. What was odd about this game is that there were 3-4 times during the match where the All Blacks got the ball to start a counter attack and every time I've seen them like that they score but in this game they just looked like they didn't have a plan. Their counter attacks petered out very quickly and then England turned it on again. I'm really not trying to have a crack at either side here but I do think the English were not as good as their press made them out to be after that game, I feel like they got a lot of help from an All Blacks side that was unusually off it's game. With their record of success you can't really blame them for having an off-day every decade or so. I also think what happened to England a week later goes some way to supporting my point of view. Not only could they not sustain the game they had played but they didn't have the firepower up front. The Springboks had an arguably more draining game the week before. Although not as flashy it was an absolute arm wrestle. Wales' game plan was to make it as hard as possible for the Springboks to take even one step forward. And of course there is the point Rassie has stated that because of their depth he could rotate the players more and therefore had a fresher forward pack. It was an exciting game of rugby but I feel like a lot more has been made of the result than what was actually there.
@@anglotim True. I liked how Rassie summed it up. He said that Eddie Jones had 4 years to prepare England to play the All Blacks but only 1 week to get them ready to play against the Boks. I think when coaches were calculating who they would play in the play offs they disregarded the Boks because they had been playing badly before 2019 even though their 2019 form should have sent some warning bells to other countries. I live in New Zealand and at the start of the tournament their main rugby website here rated all the teams with their winning chances. They gave the Boks a 6% chance of winning. Even going into the final the odds were heavily claimed in favour of England over here. Although the Boks had a huge support base here from All Blacks supporters who wanted to see their loss from the previous week avenged. I was really surprised after the game how happy the All Blacks supporters were that the Boks won. It was really cool.
@@anglotim Fair enough. I think from a distance it is hard to separate the fans from the media. Just curious to know if you agree that the English were very good in the ABs win but weren't *that* good, do you also feel that the ABs had a very rare bad day? I know that you're saying you respect the Boks in a final and I appreciate that and I am not trying to diminish the English win, it was amazing. I think it is a a statement about the press and how they carry on.
@@anglotim True and I think the loss of Sinkler in the 3rd minute really was a problem. Although the Bok scrum would probably still have been dominant I think the England scrum would have been stable for longer while he was on the field. Although the Beast looked like he was going to break anyone who got in front of him on that day. It was a very exciting match.
As a Welsh person, it pains me to say it but this is the best performance by a European team in the professional era...kudos to the Roses they really turned up for this semi!
I was hoping for a Wales England final so at least one of us took away the World Cup. You were also close to the final. We had totally the wrong tactics for SA.
Frikkie Oosthuizen SA will no doubt bring their A game on in the finals. Your forwards are very strong so i expect to see a more expansive game to the wide areas of the pitch from England. Either way this world cup isn’t done yet, may the best team win. Good luck to you Boks
Arguably England's best performance And greatest win in at least 15 years It's going to be a classic final. England are slight favourites Both are the best teams in tournament South Africa will desperately want To be crowned champions Considering all that's going on back home And with the history between both nations England will have their work cut out Either of them will be worthy champions Regards
@@ross_1014 ENG were much better team well deserved solid performance. Even ref's allowing few forward passes to NZLAND, they kept going for the outside and the roses just quashed them every time
Re your comment Chu-chu about the NZ team selection, I agree. I believe that the best players should play in their best positions rather than trying to get different players on to the field.
@John Brown Was that the 'old boys club' that allowed two NZ forward passes and chalked off a try that should have stood? Have some class and rewatch, his arm tries to wrap and is still going round as he goes out...maybe you are new to rugby so happy to help explain anything that is unclear.
@@dannie2712 Why do people like you have to make everything into an argument? The original comment was nice and complimented the all blacks but you have to come in here and start insulting people and starting arguments. It’s a bit sad really…
I thought Hanson gave one of the best post match interviews. He was clearly heartbroken and yet fulsome and honest in his praise for England. He was the model of what a losing gentleman should be. (Cheika, take note). New Zealand should be proud of their players but in particular their coach.
He was also very humble in the victory over Ireland with his 1st comments being a thank you to Joe Schmidt and rory best for what they have given to rugby. Gentleman, professional and a living legend. For me, he epitomises what rugby is about - respect
A performance like no other for any English sporting side in history, for me at any rate. To reproduce that level of excellence in execution, mental strength and dominance was, looking back now, too big an ask for the final. I was so convinced we had it in the bag, however this performance epitomised why I watch sport - that’s more than enough for me. A masterclass in rugby from Eddie and the lads.
@@hus390 Except for winning World Cups in football, cricket and rugby of course. Plus having the best football league in the world. Good in swimming, athletics and golf too of course. We also know an idiot when we hear one, you being a prime example.
@@hus390 Then there’s cycling, Formula One, boxing - all individuals backed up by support teams. We have plenty of winners without any need to criticise other nations - that’s for the limited only.
It really took a few hours for this to sink in. We know the ABs are very dangerous, and can turn a game quickly, I could not relax at all until 80+ minutes. Quite simply, and I don’t say this lightly, this is one of the greatest English sporting performances of the last 50 years. That is so because of the huge respect I have for the ABs.
@Darius Beaumont no, I'm saying that England won that game against the all blacks fair and square. Cause I'm sick of people complaining about the ref was getting paid to make England win, well England scored 3 trys and the ref didn't include 2 of them. So don't be a sore loser. Fool
Got to be one of the best England team performances of the modern game. Just a masterclass in every facet of the field. Underhill and Curry are something else
England destroyed the aura of NZ in this game, really showed they will crack under pressure like anyone else. Congrats to England, one of the greatest tactical games of rugby I ever saw.
@@mosehlewi3081 Do you beileve what he's saying about destroying the AB aura? We lost badly in 99, 03 close one in 07. Did those games destroy the ABs aura? If so, then why are they regarded so highly?
Right at the very end of this titanic battle of giants, two England players helped a New Zealand player to his feet, the respect these two teams have for each other continued right up to the end of the game...fantastic ..other sports could learn from these professional sportsmen on how to play at the highest level and still have total respect....
I have to say as an Englishman, that comments from Kiwis below are quite humbling and inspiring! New Zealand are the team to beat and always will be! Whatever the outcome of tomorrows final against South Africa, I am sure that the All Blacks will go away and lick their wounds, and come back with something better! Respect to the Fern!
Congratulations to the England team. My team got well and truly beaten by a better team on the day. No excuses from NZ fans. The England team played fantastic and thoroughly deserved their victory. Good luck in the final next week.
Something didn't feel right in NZ's game from the start. I felt like the players were nervous, they made so many handling errors and bad passes which I'm sure we can all say is rare coming from the All blacks... I'm looking forward to hearing more about the players' perspective on the game. Also I'm not the best analyst but it seemed to me that the AB had no gameplan a bit like England in against Wales in nations this year. In any case I'm sure the next game between these two giants won't be as one sided but will be as memorable!
its easy to love the all blacks not just for their all round mastery of rugby, their skill and flair but for how gracious and complimentary they are in defeat. no excuses. just well wishes for the better team on the day. have not seen one negative comment from a new zealand fan and i think i speak for everyone when i say they are a credit to the sport 👍
@walrus - apart from the size, the speed, the skills, the backup, the coach, the confidence, the fitness, the luck of the bounce, the strategy..... did I mention the coach?, they had the desire to Win!
As an Englishman, we thank you for an exciting, surprising and disappointing tournament. Congrats to the springboks though, it was earned through hard work and dedication.
@@madhavmittal7332 by a fluke, don't understand why they couldn't play another super over when the scores were tied again. Since when is a game let alone a final decided on most boundaries instead of wickets?
Having watched rugby for many years, I would say that is the best performance I have ever seen, including the 2003 squad. England won every part of that game!!!!!!!
@@Blindside_Flanker 4 years later & you're still a fraggle. Nope, a "L"oser ! With a capital L. You live a very sad, lonely life & scour the internet with troll comments with your weasel talk. Grow up & seek help
@Darius Beaumont what as supposed to the pacific islanders poached by ABs, Wallabies, France, Wales, Italy, Japan and even SA (Mtawarira, who was from Zimbabwe). All the teams do it and there is nothing wrong with that. Its 2019 mate. Get with the program.
Errrm... You're not speaking for me here Floyd! While England played one of their best games ever, our forwards just didn't turn up. Embarrassing from them really to not counter-punch and lay the platform for Smith and his backs to do their work...
@@theoilandgasresourceportal2132 Yes as an Englishman I think the calls were fine. Rules haven't changed but the attention to detail has. That's the only difference.
@shaun king I was disappointed in the failure to pick up those forward passes late in the game too. It really would have dropped the kiwis heads more and reinforced the fact they had a shocker. However, the game was over by then. Obviously they wanted to redeem a bit of pride.
Not an England fan but I gotta say thi is one of England's best game ever...to dethroned the world's best rugby team like this..from the get go to the end ..never seen the All blacks being shut down completely from every corner of the game like this before..well played and congrats to the English side..
agree(...more fun than footy..). I'm from northern England but have lived in nz for 40 years and i'd much rather watch a RU game now, since they sped the game up by changing the rules on releasing the ball in a tackle etc. Northern England has no idea, in general, about RU, it's all 80% football- 17% RL- 3% every other sport, haha. Living in nz has taught me to thoroughly understand and appreciate the modern game, though as i say, only 'cos they dragged the game out of the beer-swillin' blood and guts shitfest it used to be. Super tough athletes these guys are nowadays...bout time
I was so happy when England won New Zealand , not happy for them but happy because I knew the Boks could dust u off with ease. I wouldn't have been so confident with New Zealand. Thank you England for giving us another world cup, cheers.
I've watched the highlights about six times now, simply blown away at how good we were. Credit to the Kiwi's for taking it like they have, I guess they couldn't argue as we were that good. Well done to all concerned!
England may well have played their most impressive game ever on this day. It was virtually faultless and so much so that NZ were dead on their feet at the end. fascinating and a privilege to watch
Just wanted to point out that if you watch the lead up to the penalty just before the end of the first half for England you will notice that there are 2 or 3 times that an All Black player enters the ruck from the side. I'm a Bok supporter but if England play like this in the final the Boks better take their game up a few notches if they want to stand a chance to win. England really looked amazing in this game. They played a near perfect game of rugby here. Very impressive. New Zealand looked out of sorts in this game, shell shocked I think. Well done England, looking forward to the final.
Joe Matthew Thanks for the appreciative comments for England from a Bok. It may not be that easy for England in the final. I fear a surprise but hope not. Best wishes.
Eddie Jones : an illustrious career. He took Australia to the 2003 World Cup. In 2007, he was assistant coach for South Africa. In 2019, he took England to the World Cup. Not to forget his time with Japan, who created an upset by beating South Africa in the 2015 World Cup.
What a game, as an Englishman I thought it was one of the best performances ever. There are no easy wins against the All Blacks, Steve Hanson showed great character post match interview.
@Maori Boy they hardly choked, the ref didn't see the ball going forward after it being striped. And how often do the AB do illegal rugby but get away with it
It was simply extraordinary. I didn't really believe we could win but I knew we were capable of an 80 minute performance. We did to the ABs what they did to the Irish. And now there's South Africa to look forward to! 😎
What a match-up! One of Rugby's classic rivalries. I mean even the kits are black and white like cowboys in an old western. I've always had respect for New Zealand, and the dignity they showed in losing here just goes to prove how deserving they are of it. I'm sure they look forwards to the rematch whenever that comes and I'm sure they'll bring their best. I only hope our boys can withhold whatever the Kiwi's throw at us!
I am an English fan so obviously I will say this is a grate game, but honestly this was truly EPIC game of rugby,. I was in a bar in Thailand 50% kiwi 50% red rose. It was one of the best 3 hours iv ever had
@@Tom-eq7eh On this day he was - but not last night. To be the best means fronting up game after game... He is however an outstanding talent and will undoubtedly take that mantle when he does...
Yeah fair play, as a welshman i wish we could do that to NZ, I'm dreading Fridays 3/4th place playoff. England were tremendous and deserve to lift the trophy Saturday.
Even after they had 32 points put past them by the boks in the final? Correct me if I'm wrong, but usually its the team with the most points in the final that lifts the trophy?
Yep, the first semi-final was utterly gripping, the second was a turgid kick fest (and poor kicking too) of anti rugby. It looked like both teams were so scared of losing they were afraid to play. It was truly dire, especially in contrast with the first semi.
We'll never see England play like this again. I don't know where the performance came from, but it's the only time we've looked unstoppable since 2003.
I watched this in the nearest pub in Kyoto after work, the only Brit. The pub was one third NZ, OZ and Japanese. Apart from fearing for my life every now and then it was an awesome experience.
I’m English , the all blacks are the greatest sporting team in my life time across all sports, but England’s performance is the best I’ve ever seen , any fair minded sports fan would agree , the all blacks will be back and respect to them , but let’s make sure we win it Saturday or this is meaningless. 👊
Okay.. it has taken me (a kiwi) 3 days to watch any highlights because its painful. Looking again NZL played pretty well considering ENG had a near perfect game. The 11 penalties from NZL and ENG making 16 turn overs, it came down to who made the least mistakes. Brilliantly played by the Poms!
The tackle on Jordi Barrett is the KEY moment of the match. There are over 20 minutes to play and it is a 1-score game at the time (13-7). NZ panic & try to run out of their own 22; rather than kick to touch, re-form defense and defend a line-out. Instead Eng turn over possession, (eventually) kick 3pts & it’s a 2-score game again! Lesson: NZ panicked too early; (just like v Fra in 2007).
Brilliant! I don't usually watch but this was special. We are all in such a mess at home its a relief to see England achieving something great against the top masters of the game. Fantastic for our morale. Thank you!
@@speleokeir It is not such a popular sport, but it is growing, it is the fastest growing sport in the country, in Brazil there are about 18,316 registered players and there are projects to expand the national league, currently called Super 13, and the tupis (our National team) has had a great evolution in recent years, we were South American champions beating Argentina in the final, ok it wasn't Argentina's main team, but they are still very strong, and there were Pumas players! Ps: My English is rusty
@@csumner4523 No argument there, Cheslin scored a brilliant try. This one, however, involved the full team flat out on attack, pushing the mighty ABs back on their heels and then rocking them with a try in which they never got a sniff of the ball. Plus all the off-loads - just great! And please note - I'm a Springboks fan!!!!
I’m back after 2 years and it’s actually scary to think that the 1 mistake england made from the line out was the AB only real chance, if wasn’t for the error they would of been pointless unheard of and if it wasn’t for couple England’s errors would of been another 10 points at least to add to that
BIG kudos for the referee for catching two errors and keeping a smooth and fair game until the end. Huge, well deserved win for England and a lovely game to be remembered for years !
Wow what an impressive England team , and I mean impressive ! The power , the energy , the strength . Most definitely the NO1 team In the world standings now . Respect from Australia , great match .
