As much as I agree with Andrew that giving Sophie a constant internal monologue would be a bad thing, by this point in the series I think giving her a whole episode would've worked really well. There's clearly a LOT going on with Sophie at this point, and it would've been nice to hear more of it. Also Olivia Coleman is great at the monologue V/O.
I like the concept as a one off but the point Andrew made about voiceover is true. Colman isn’t in character as Sophie it’s just reading the lines. When Mitchell & Webb do the voiceover they’re very much in character
The relationship tree is most likely a reference to the documentary series “Comedy Connections”. The art style and Coleman’s delivery are almost the same.
It'd be interesting to see if there's an explanation somewhere of what happens to Elena. She's a neighbour who's in every ep of s6, but isn't seen outside s6, even though Gail is in one ep each of s7 & 8. Do Elena & Gail go to Quebec between s6 & 7? I guess Elena & Gail split up, but where does Elena go?
@@davidz2562 There is no 'canon' explanation given. Elena's actress said she was originally 'penciled in' for a series 7 but they decided to bring in a new character instead [even though the actress wanted to return] which probably caused the discrepancy. I think the logical situation is Gail cancelled Quebec and kicked Elena out so Elena blocked Jez from her phone/social media and started afresh somewhere else.
Sam Bain said in an interview with Podcast Secrets of the Pharaohs that Jeff has a voice over as well in the un-broadcast pilot [basically an early version of the Interview] so maybe multiple characters were supposed to have voice overs which just wouldn't work.
I always guessed that Burgling was originally episode 2 on account of the fact that the old TV appears in Spin War. Nice to have that basically confirmed!
Spin War begins with Mark telling Jez about how unhappy he is about Sophie leaving him. Barney then drops by with the 'heartbreak tuna'. That makes it clear that it was meant to be the first ep of s5.
I wonder if they changed it because if Spin War was episode one it might be too obvious that Dobby was 'the new Sophie' when each episode of the series is a new 'the one' [hence starting with Heather who's a dud]. Or maybe they changed it because 'Burgling' has cameos from Paula and 'Clean shirt Kid' from the very first episode, it shows the show is making a fresh start after the wedding [phase 2 as it were] but is still the same show.
@@jamesatkinsonja I think you're right. Largely 'Burgling' is quite self contained and almost "event television" whereas 'Spin War' is a continuation of existing storylines. First episode of a season probably attracts more new/lapsed viewers who might be put off by an ep that requires so much prior knowledge.
@@axw You made a video about your least favourite PS ep, s9 e2, Gregory's Beard. Are you going to make a video about your favourite ep, and which one is it?
13:38 could be “think of relationship like a real ship” which I think came up at some point during peep show when jez was a life coach, but it could be from a different show, I’ve definitely heard it before though
@@mankytoes At the end of s1 e1, Warring Factions, he decides against pursuing her, because she's Russia: vast, mysterious; unconquerable. Sophie's Poland: manageable; won't put up too much of a fight.
I think Mark refers to Super Hans as Jeremy's bandmate despite Sophie knowing him is because Mark doesn't like being associated with him, so he felt he had to describe him this way
14:13 this confirms it for me. You see, I've always had a feeling that burgling was the second episode of the series rather than the first. I have multiple reasons for believing this. First of all and the most obvious of all is that the TV that was stolen in Burgling is seen in S[in War. You may say it's a replacement, but the actual replacement TV is a small model, not another big one. Maybe the episodes order was changed when the episodes where being broadcast on TV, and that's not an entire;y unrealistic idea, as it has happened that TV episodes from other TV series' were broadcast in a different order from what they intended. I've always had that feeling, as even after my first couple of times viewing said episodes I felt personally that the order was switched around. I just never found anyone else who also could see the TV thing or thought the same thing as me. Love the videos by the way. Keep the great work XX
Sophie's internal line about the sperm blending got a big laugh from me, but I agree it would have been structurally compromising to make that a regular feature
Honestly wouldn’t mind a spin off but from people looking into Mark and Jez’s life. Also wouldn’t mind getting the odd Super Hands inner monologue, trying to write for his internal monologues would be a fun challenge.
Stop thinking of relationship like work is surely a reference to the bit where marks first getting down with sophie and talking about 'getting down to work'?
DVD Producer, Zanna Bird only has one IMDB credit, Post Production Co-ordinator on Richard E. Grant's Hotel Secrets from 2014. Pointless fact for you there!
Some eps had their names changed before being broadcast, including s1 e3, On the Pull, which was previously Bowling & s2 e4, University Challenge, which was previously University.
@@davidz2562 I think the difference is that Zahra is a big part of episode 1 of that series and people were used to 'this series' love interest' by then. Dobby isn't in episode 1 of series 5 and Elena has a wordless cameo in series 6 episode 1 [and we don't know where her character will go until episode 2].
@@jamesatkinsonja I'd have thought they'd have filmed each series including its opening sequence before they started screening it, so the people who made PS would have known how important each character would be to its series.
Mitchell and Webb have made the tongue in cheek suggested they come back in 10-15 years time as old men! They were going to do a peep show movie around series 4 [with the plot being what became the wedding episode] and after series 8 [where Mark and Jez follow Dobby to New York] but it never got very far.
I'm inclined to disagree regarding your point about Sophie sounding out of character in her voice overs. I think throughout Peep Show Sophie tends to speak only in a "reactive" way in that conversations are usually instigated by others toward her - and so I don't think we ever actually hear a comfortable or neutral sounding Sophie throughout the whole series. With that in mind, I think there might be just an aural disconnect in effect when Coleman's voiceover sounds "Too clean." I will concede though that she is less experienced than Mitchell and Webb (edit: at doing the voice overs) so it's not surprising she's not as talented as the two.
One of the main themes of Peep Show is that there is often a disconnect between the way one thinks and the way one acts. I feel you have completely misunderstood one of the key points of this show if you think that you can tell what people are thinking based off of their facial expressions.
