Kangaroos are experts at nursing, as marsupials they have to be. As joeys they nurse long enough that their mother can get pregnant and give birth to their younger sibling before the older joey is weaned, but kangaroo nipples are smart enough to dispense the right milk with the right fat content for the joey attached to it.

+விஷ்ணு கார்த்திக் Most people don't drink animal milk either, because the East Asian and Black African populace is almost entirely without the lactose tolerant mutation. There's no reason to drink milk after nursing in the modern world, because calorie density is not a problem for Westerners anymore and the highly impoverished parts of the world are almost entirely lactose intolerant.
@Vishnu_Karthik
@Vishnu_Karthik 8 лет назад
Metal Fuel and Fire Why does it matter if you're lactose intolerant or not? Chinese&Indians seem to enjoy dairy regardless.
@metalfuelandfire
@metalfuelandfire 8 лет назад
***** Because it kills the healthy gut bacteria if you can't break down the milk sugar. Chinese and Indians only drink milk because they have idiotic central planners telling them it's good for them like we do in the west. Cheese is another story, because it's primarily from milk fat. There is no historical milk consumption in East Asia before western involvement. That's not to say that western involvement adding milk to the diet hasn't brought a LOT of people out of poverty because of the calorie density, but if you can get the calories otherwise and you're Asian, you should.

Another cool fact; the ability to curl ones tongue comes from a long ancestry of mammals that wouldn't have lips. For example many think that Cetaceans, that's whales, dolphins and porpoises when nursing the calf simply filters milk from the salt water or drink the milky sea water. This however would do more harm than good. Like us, whales have the ability to curl their tongue into a sort of drinking straw, however they use this to then latch around the mammary and drink milk through their tongue straw without the intake of sea water.

From an evolutionary perspective like Hank mentioned, just think... Why did humans think of trying another mammal's milk in the first place? And surely it didn't know how to milk it out with its hands, how did it acquire the first sample then? Don't say a word, just imagine... *Peace*
@anakso
@anakso 8 лет назад
+Mak Shethiya The same reason we eat anything that seems like an odd decision. At one point in time some humans were really fucking desperate and they figured out a way to not die, then got used to it/liked it and now we eat it.
@coolmdj111
@coolmdj111 8 лет назад
anakso I think it could have been more of curiosity than desperation. I don't think the four legged animal that we once were could've thought of going for just the milk of the other animals. Later, the more intelligent and now two legged mammal that we'd become, were really good hunters (since we'd use tools & all). It seems a little strange that we'd opt for the milk of an animal than the animal itself for nutrition. Cereal wasn't yet invented! :P
@InstrucTube
@InstrucTube 8 лет назад
+Mak Shethiya I'd think it's at least somewhat likely that in an effort to use all of the animal that they could some early hunters happened to try the milk and realize "hey, this doesn't seem like it will kill me, hooray food!"
@BertGrink

I kind of want to taste seal milk now! I think it would have roughly the same fat content as mascarpone cheese-- of course you couldn't drink it, but you could use just a spoonful to make a whole recipe richer, or you could use it as just one component in a really decadent dessert. But then again, I would never want to do anything to harm a seal pup, so I probably don't. I do wish he'd gone into more detail about the different kinds of milks--like why goat milk has such a distinctive flavor-- as well as introduce other animal milks that have other properties.

"Milk is for babies, that's why it was made" - yeah, and animals have muscle and fat for themselves, not for us to eat. Plants also did not evolve roots and fruits and everything else in order to be eaten by us, yet we eat them anyway. So I don't find drinking cow milk any more weird than, say, burning and eating a cow's meat, or boiling and eating potatoes, or making a salad from the reproductive organs of several plants (e.g. a fruit salad). :-D
@grimwatcher
@grimwatcher 8 лет назад
Well it is unintuitive, there is the old joke about the first human to milk a cow, what was he doing? His buddy must've walked into a really awkward situation. Like, "Cronk seriously, just what are you doing to the cow? You know what, I don't wanna know"
@Cythil
@Cythil 8 лет назад
+TheFilthyCasual Pretty good point. I guess it only a bit weird because there aren't really that many animals that do complement there diet with the milk of other animals. Though fruit is actually made to be eaten (as much as we can say something that evolved had a goal. Which it really does not. But fruits survival success is actually related to them being good food for other animals that then spread the seeds around.)
@JustGrowingUp84
@JustGrowingUp84 8 лет назад
grimwatcher Heh, I like those jokes! But seriously, it's not unintuitive at all, in fact I'd argue it's the exact opposite of that - after all, humans were well acquainted with human babies drinking milk, so the next question was quite natural: can you also do that as an adult? Maybe early humans tried human milk, found it not to their liking and/or the quantity was too small, tried early domesticated animals' milk, found that it was both more palatable and much more plentiful, and the rest is tasty, tasty history... ;-D
@JustGrowingUp84
@JustGrowingUp84 8 лет назад
+Cythil Yeah, I also thought about that, but it's still weird, especially if you consider that plenty of early fruits (and other plants and plant parts as well, of course, see corn and the other cereal grasses) were not especially fit for human consumption - *we* changed that, through selective breeding. Also, many of them, even today, even when we talk only about the actual fruit of the plant, are still not edible for humans, we need to cook them!
@iota-09
@iota-09 8 лет назад
+grimwatcher fun fact: most unintuitive foods in our everyday life came to be known thanks to a random mistake, like letting grape sit for months, and then still drink it and find out about wine.

Hank: Lactose tolerance beyond early childhood is not a mutation. All mammals have the lactose synthesising gen, of course, but this gene turns off (after a certain age copies of DNA appear with inactive gen). This is epigenetics, because you see a difference in number of copies with the gen active/inactive, where mutation means that the gen is or is not there.

+cougarhunter33 Reminds me of a line from "The 2,000-Year-Old Man." The 2,000-year-old man (Mel Brooks) explains that he has always taken his development slowly: "Everything was low and slow." As an example, he claims that he breast-fed for 200 years. "How did you--who did you breast-feed WITH?" asks the startled interviewer (Carl Reiner). The 2000-year old man responds matter-of-factly, "I tricked a lot of ladies into doing it."

Two things. Why are people so disgusted buy the idea of an adult drinking human milk? It is the only food substance that a human can live on exclusively and be healthy. We happily drink from cows and goats (which is great by the way) but why only a handful of humans? Considering that they are extinct, what exactly are the legal issues with milking a rhino? It doesn't cause harm or stress to the animal, assuming I didn't restrain it say, but is it counted as illegal to do it?
@iota-09
@iota-09 8 лет назад
+PureZOOKS i guess it's based on the image of thinking of an adult man eating stuff that a baby would eat, that's not socially accepted, although there are ways to get your hands on human r almst-human milk, most do not drink it for3 reasons: they don't know about it, they think it's unnatural and they say it tastes ike crap.

@@charathcutestory Look up the etymology of the name dolphin. Nihilistic pancakeface was just being funny and pointing out that people are perverts. They were lactose intolerant, but that didn't stop them. I bet it wasn't immediately obvious how to milk a cow's ancestor by hand. What did people think about it back then? Cows actually aren't more economically efficient than goats, if you factor in the amount of feed it takes to produce a gallon of cow vs. goat milk, goats win outright, and goats can have a more diversified grazing diet than cows, as goats will eat weeds, grains, grass, anything growing out in a field really. We've just grown accustomed to cows, but goat milk is healthier and more environmentally friendly. I think it tastes better but others disagree.
