Awesome tips on going through decades of photos! Your suggestion to think what story the photo tells is fabulous! Also to take a box at a time is great. If you can leave a sorting area set up that also helps I love photos and I am the family historian and photo organizer. I have organized my grandmother's, Mom's, Aunt's, and two sisters lifetime of photos. After I was done sorting the key photos were scanned. My sister Brenda passed in January and I was able to share the digital file of her key photos over 60 years. Even with the digital photos it takes time to find those photos. I have also organized over 24,000 digital photos. Yes that is a lot but I have a large family. Many times for a 50th wedding anniversary, 75th birthday or a funeral people ask for these photos to display or make a video of. I am glad that I had them prepared in advance. Thanks for motivating us to keep slowly working on a decluttering and organizing project. ❤️❤️❤️

Funny your doing this. During the beginning of covid I did 4 totes 18 gallon size of pictures. I mailed pictures to family & friends that they could share with their fami I y. I wrote a handwritten note with everyone. Hoping they enjoy the memories. I mailed over 40 padded envelopes to ppl. For me it was a joy to get fed back that I never expected. Glad you r doing this bc I still have a few books to go through. I'm glad for the tips you talk about in video

I have done the same with my 3 sons photos. It was a huge task. They are all in their mid to late 30s. When they were young, their father left our home & he remarried (I never did). My youngest son came across my professional engagement photo where his dad and I were young & smiling and he said "Wow, it seems so strange to see you and dad together".....I would encourage women to never toss old photos in anger because I did that with a lot of photos & I am glad I had at least one because it's important to your children to see that there were happy times. Love your cheerful spirit, you are a joy!

Well I am beginning to think we are kin some how. I have decluttered some of my photos. I did the same thing. Animals and photos without people on them. Didn't think about what the people are doing in them. I can get rid of more. My back issues are like yours. I have a very very hard time. Sweeping, mopping or using vacuum. Have to sit down a lot cleaning bathrooms or washing dishes. Even walking in the yard. I do not have any children of my own. So, I can let things go easier. You reminded me today. Karen, wow, so much done in one vlog. The picture declutter was so satisfying to watch as were all the cardboard boxes you were able to move over into proper clear bins. I have the same back issues. Have you thought of maybe pulling over a chair and going over the rest of the pictures in a more comfortable posture? Might feel so much better. Taking pictures of the books and having your son decide from a distance was a great idea. Congratulations on a very satisfying session. Cheers

This is great. I have been doing this with our pictures (I still am at home with my parents at the moment). I also have recently went through my grandparents pictures and things since they passed several years ago. My grandparents grew up during the great depression and they saved everything. I want to say they had over 80 photo albums at their house. I sorted those pictures by decade and then separated them by person for each of my Aunts, Uncles, and cousins and of course my Dad and any pictures of me and my mom. I still have a lot of their older pictures in a box which range from 1850's to the early 2000's. My grandmother pretty much had all of her mom's pictures and my grandfather had all of his mom's pictures and each of my great grandmother's pretty much kept all of their parent's pictures so it is quite a lot. I will try and organize ours more and then go back to working on my grandparents pictures. Awesome video!

I am in the mindset of giving your extra copies of family photos to other family members.... or scan them for safe keeping. In 2005 my brother died in a horrible fiery car accident after attending our grandmothers funeral. In his car that perished in the fire, was all of our family genealogy and all of his family photos. No one had copies of those items. I so wish he had made copies for us. But you are right, each circumstance is different. I admire your stamina in this process. You rock!

I tackled my photos in the first Covid Lockdown. All physical photos I sorted in years and put them in albums. They are living in my living room and I always find a picture, if I'm looking for it. All the digital photos I sorted in folders on the computer for the separate years. I started to make printed photo book for every year frkm January till December. My kids love to watch the books. All physical photos that were double, I started a photo album for each kid (it's mostly the first two years of them) an I gifted them the albums, so that they have baby photos of them on their own. Now, every month I clean my phone, put the pictures on my computer, sort and delete them and I can easily create a photo book at the beginning of the new year.

I got rid of 5 books by keeping them in a photo box. It takes up so much less space. I have one for my household and one for other extended family and friends that are important. I have a small hose so the space was more important than the ease of looking through a box. I love your decluttering videos so much! My basement is all that is left 🤪

Photos are such a time consuming category to declutter and organize. I made a big dent in ours in spring 2020 with so much time at home and finally did the baby book for my then 14 year old. Now what is left is organized by year in clear Iris cases (each case holds 16 smaller cases), which i labeled by year or person. It was a huge job, but so easy now to find a photo. I culled a lot. I’m still catching up with my digital photos and getting them into Shutterfly books. It feels great to have all our physical photos and albums now in just one place in the house for easy retrieval. We’re starting to send kids out into the world and we will let them store things here at home, too, with some limits, as our home is short on storage. I’m hoping my minimalist ways will rub off on them to give them greater ease as adults in living, moving, and managing their finances. You’re doing great! Your consistent effort on your basement is paying off.

My daughter and I scrapbook together. I am making a life album for each one of my children and 2 of my 3 grandchildren (My daughter is making her Son's album). I have pictures sorted by each child/grandchild. If we have group pictures I make a copy of the photo for each of the albums. I make sure I date and journal on each album page. I don't do fancy pages ...very basic because I believe the story and the photo are most important. I too make sure the important people/events are in the album. I crop the pictures if needed to fit more photos on the page and have room for journaling. My Grandchildren love looking at their parents when they were young and always thank me for keeping their life history. One thing I will suggest is that basements/attics are not a friend to Photos...That is why photos fade.

Hey sweet lady! Great video and terrific tips. May I add another tip? Collect all of the negative strips and any disks that came when a roll of film developed. Put them in your bank safety deposit box. So in case of fire or weather damage you have back ups. I’ve been trying to burn a cd of new photos taken on my phone each time I dump them to my pc and then also drop them by the safe deposit box. Luckily my bank has a main office about 25 miles away (along with a branch a few blocks from my house). I opted to get a safe deposit box at the main branch for extra safe keeping given that if a tornado or flooding hit my house it would also likely hit the branch close by. The main branch has like 3 ft concrete walls so it will likely still be in somewhat ok condition if weather hits there. /Ok no more standing unless you put boxes on top of the card table to “raise” your work area. Or bring a chair over. Cold damp air coupled with standing on concrete and bending funky is a wonky back situation waiting to happen. 😖 Hope you survived this round!! ❤️😃 /Q’s - how old were your older kids when you adopted the younger kids. How old were the younger kids when you got them. Answers optional! Are the younger kids all siblings? / Have you decluttered anything you regret yet? Has there been anything that you sold? Hello, Em!! Thanks for the tip on the negatives! I was pulling them aside but the safe deposit box is a great idea!! I definitely need a better set up for my back! I thought because I had the table I would be fine and then when I wasn't (to be honest) didn't want to take the time to get the chair as my lighting and camera were blocking the doorway. Wow great job in with the decluttering of photos. Its hard to do, but totally worth it! I’ve scanned a bunch of old pics with my epson v39 scanner and it has some really great color correcting features in the scanning software. It really brings the older faded pics back to life!

I went through my photos a few years ago and was shocked at how many I could throw out and how easy it was. I have them all in plastic photo storage boxes in the top of the wardrobe (closet) in the spare room. I tried to give my niece all the photos of her (which is half my photos) but she wanted to store them here. kids! lol Loved this video. Totally understand the back issues. You need a photo sorting chair to sit on

The take a picture of it method is quite possibly the best method ever for adult kid stuff. I actually use it for their stuff and stuff I think they might be interested in that I want to move out. For whatever reason, there just is less sentiment in a picture and not putting your hands on it (a bonding moment, ha) makes it more distant. Sometimes when I bring stuff to their house I feel like it is unfair, because now they have it in their space to clutter up. And, I send some things as a group message so they will do some negotiations amongst themselves. In the end, I maintain "ownership" of things until they clearly go to trash, donate, or the kid. No more limbo :) The other thing about pictures is that I can tell my story about it ("I got this from grandma and it turns out that it is an Avon blue jar that came with soap peaches in it that she might have used up? And then I had it and put dried currants in it from that stinky bush by the back door that smells like cat pee but currants are really good for you but these ones were ancient so I cooked them for the chickens with the other stuff I decluttered from the pantry. And now I don't want it for decor and it can't be used for canning. I washed it so it is pretty so do any of you want it?") And one did but regularly no one does and that's no problem because I got to tell my story without interruption from anyone/anything (which is why I tell stories like one long run on sentence). And then I have a plan about where the item is going - and at some point in there I break whatever sentimental hold I have on the item which is a relief. I can say that this process is getting so much easier and faster now that I've done it many times. Probably obvious but all the mental gymnastics is why my mother still says to me regularly, "you do everything the hardest possible way". yup. (but I'm working on efficiencies in all areas of life)

Karen Thank you for all the helpful tips. I am going to use them on my next round of decluttering photos. Standing half bent like that hurts my back so badly also. I need to walk and move or sit at a table to go through things. I use a folding table and an old office chair so I can leave things out to work on them. I have been working on printed photos for several years. Photography was my hobby so I have a lot of photos. Each time I go back through them, I can let go of more. I am at the point where I need to compare printed photos with digital photos in the overlap when I used both. At one time, when I had film developed they included a disc instead of negatives so I need to see if I can upload those from the disc to my computer and then toss the printed photos. My goal is to downsize all printed photos to the ones I want to keep, then have them professionally scanned and eliminate printed photos. I have my digital photos organized in folders on my computer and printed photos in bags, by year, then in date order, and labeled as to who, what, and where. I will need to continue this system to label all printed photos that I have scanned. After a computer hard drive crash years ago that lost many photos, I do a computer backup and a separate photos backup to an external hard drive and a flash drive every few months. I also have some photos stored online. When this process is complete I plan to have all stored online and backed up in two places. It has been several years in this process. With your encouragement I hope to finish this year. It will be my Christmas present to me.

oh! and this great start on the photos! Probably most of us need some sort of permission to just toss the photo trash! I was thinking about this the other day when I was clearing some space on my laptop and came across a bunch of pictures from the church preschool where I volunteer (after working there for many years). These are kids I still know and love. But, probably time to just get over it :) It's not like I'm tossing the kids or relationships......

After my father died on July 25, 2015 I got the job of dealing with all the photos . I separated them between 3 kids and 3 grandkids. Stills and slides. I put slides onto disks. Also albums for just pretty, house gatherings, and one for pictures of just Mom and Dad. It took 6 months working on it ALOT. It felt so good to accomplish the task and be able to share them all.

Organizing photos IS quite a job. I understand doing it in small sections. I just purchased a new photo album for our Wedding photo's (married 35 years) and am in the process of taking them out of old albums. Unfortunately the albums were not acid free. Keeping meaningful photo's and letting go of random photo's is great advice. I love how you are getting rid of the cardboard boxes and getting things into clear bins. Your basement is coming together! Another great job!!

Hi Heather!! My albums have all yellowed! I thought about getting the ones that are just plastic slips you put each photo in but worried about the photos eventually sticking to them. So acid free may be the way to go though I know over time the acids in the air can get to them. But we'll just do our best! Thanks so much for your encouraging spirit!! I appreciate you!! 💝🌹

Thanks for the photo advice. I’m mostly done but your ideas will help. Not sure about the basket for the games. You’ll have to dump the basket to see what you have. I think stacked where you could see the name of the game was better. Also, if you have to “play Tetris” to get them to fit in the basket it will be hard to put them away.

I went through my pictures last year , I was in bed one night with a strong urge to sort and divide all of them . I gave all to my grown children & grandkids only keeping the newest pictures that I set out. If I want to see them I will go to their house and look at them. I will be 58 in March I have become more minimal and I don’t want the burden of taking care of stuff. I wanted to pass pictures on now while I was able and my kids would not have to do after I am gone😊

I like all the suggestions for sorting the photos, especially the one; if I need to see a giraffe, I can find it on the internet, don't need "that" photo. Suggestions; you could get a chair to keep in the basement, can sit to sort photos. The bins that were sorted from the cardboard box contents, why don't you label the bins now, before you put them away?

Wow! What a difference! You have accomplished so much Karen! Woohoo! Way to go! Louis was able to come home last night. He still doesn't feel well but he is resting! Once he is better and I've taken a mental and physical break I will be jumping back on the bandwagon of decluttering! I have definitely have thousands of photos too! Especially pictures of me and my mom. I love them and cherish them but they make me so sad to look at so I don't look at them often. What special memories! Its so cool to look back! Everytime my mom would get overwhelmed she would say a prayer and would start singing church hymns. I have thousands of physical photos and honestly I don't think I have ever gone through them! I have some extremely old photos. Some from grandparents way back in the 1880s! Passed down to me from generations gone by. And some from the early 1930s and 1940s from my moms parents. Karen!!! Be carful!!!! Make sure you sit down!!! I have back problems too! I understand! I'm approaching 48 so i don't know what category I fall into. How exciting! I will be there! I'm not so much there yet with the pictures..... I know when we still had a desktop using a photo screensaver was great fun for the kids to watch and hear stories or remember events. The one thing I have sorted photos from was a trip to France that had really negative emotions attached. I turned the photos upside down and just saved some based on energy.... The rest went in the fire. The ones that remained I really like and don't make me feel bad.

Great advice for pictures! I sorted ours out some time ago, placed them in photo boxes with year divisions. . I have 2 grown children in their 50's, and I think my daughter took what she wanted. However, I simply hold onto the few boxes and one day it'll be up to them to decide what they'll do with what remains. Perhaps their children may want some by then. But, I eliminated many, just as you have, years ago.

Karen, you must be exhausted! Thanks for the fun video! Your hair looks really nice, as well as your lipstick and nails! Yes, we share certain aches and pains. Every once and awhile, one must sit. Its difficult to get things done. After short rests,(can't sit long when anxious to keep going). Time consuming. Yes, photos are so emotional/ exhausting to sort. I have done some. I have the photos in ziplocs, inside two large tote bins. Also one smaller tote. We all have those random, "why?" photos. Lol! It was nice that you shared your photos with us! You & Hubby, are a nice looking couple, then and now! That is a tough job! You ARE doing IT! Take care of yourself!

I had so many pix I got rid of (which was hundreds) I took pictures of the ones I wanted to remember and they are on a flash drive. Now I’m going through 10,000 pix on my flash drives but I just take my time bc I do it at work during down time. I’m down to the last two flash drives and I’m going to end up with just a few!

Good job, the games are better now. You also can put them in clear ziplak bags and cut the front of the game and all what is in the boxes so that you dont have all the boxes but just the games. Then they will fit in a clear bin en you can see every game you have and know what game is it because you keep only the name from the box. Love to see you💋🥰

Pictures! Pictures! So many pictures! I have ours in a few albums and the rest in a box. The kids did not want us to get rid of them but they don’t want them. I’m sure once we are gone they will not sort thru. My son left for college out East …then went right to a job in florida and then got married and moved to california…needless to say he didn’t take a lot with him. Every trip home could you go thru your things? Sure mom…but didn’t…. We moved right before this Christmas ….and everything of his came along 🤦‍♀️ they came during Christmas…he went thru a few boxes….we still have 10 more in basement. Once our kids always our kids….stuff and all! 😂 I totally understand the back pain…with moving my pain relievers were like vitamins. I have arthritis in my spine and slowly each disk is fusing. Between that and my fibromyalgia each day is a challenge but a gift!

Warm enough to go to the car wash. Friday is car and gym bag day. Researched shower units again at Home Depot, and post office on the way home from gym. Man-pleaser meatloaf and mashed potatoes for dinner. Did a warm wear and grocery drop at the homeless center this past week. The last holiday turkey is defrosted enough to cook this weekend. A bit tired so I am going to watch your video and drink some Lady Gray Tea( my fav). My children each have their Photos and copies of historical photos that they were interested in. I have a small album that I have kept and a few framed on display. I do not have any on phone and had about 20 on my iPad. That is it. As you would guess, Alan is another story. He has it down to one bin filled with large envelopes. In these envelopes are categories. His Childhood and teen years, historical , Family, At the Lake. I had a few of the historical one reprinted and framed, now on the wall. He does not have anything on his phone or online. I helped with the initial sort out, but now his territory. I just know that I will not move it.

It was so expensive for flash cubes and developing so not much taken; most were discarded at the time simply because they did not turn out and were disappointing. So really not much to go through. I did Have some baby portraits made and the children each have their own. The loaf is in the oven, hope it turns out okay! Since I am taking a trip in April, you did prompt me to go through the “What to do if I Croak “ book. I wish to refine further but an improvement. I will have a business meeting my sons back east when I visit. The goal is to transition as quietly as possible.

Oh my goodness!! You won’t believe what I had in front of me when I seen this video go up?? A box of photos!!!!! 😯 I was having a tough time because it was a box with a lot of my sister who recently passed away. I put it away and grabbed another for now. AND it was so much easier to declutter the next one. Most especially watching you! Karen, great video! I am not looking forward to decluttering our photos, I will be honest. My kids went through some of them several years ago and took some that were important to them but we still have a ton left. I tried to organize them years ago in albums but still have a large storage box overflowing to deal with. I thought I was the only one who took random pics and sent to her kids asking - hey do you want this? 😜 I found it’s easier to get on with the job and they can quickly decide yes or no and I set it aside till I go see them or they come by to visit. It has made my decluttering go much faster and easier, and they keep only what’s important to them. I am glad the games worked in the basket. Nice way to corral everything. 😊 i am glad you were able to consolidate the boxes down to the clear bins. I can’t wait till Monday’s video. Have a blessed weekend! ❤️

Then I stopped for some reason and never finished. 🤷‍♀️ My daughter lives an hour away, my son three hours away, so they do not visit often. I must say I have all my photos out of albums and into boxes very much like the ones you used in this video, I should really go through them, sort out the ones that aren’t in focus properly etc. My but you and your family were and are all cute.🥰 you’ve obviously always had those pretty eyes. I must say I do enjoy looking through ones of my and children and grandchildren, they grow so fast don’t they. I know I’ll find it hard to throw out some of my pictures but I don’t think any one will want them as the years go by. I ask myself would i frame this and put it on the wall? So others can see it whenever wherever like strangers who come fix the plumbing or maybe family members im not fans of because theyre super judgy or toxic etc like unless id basically make it public for anyone to see think like facebook display pic or put it up on youtube sorta deal or worst case scenario as a funeral picture or missing person picture on the news or whatever like is that what i would want to represent me to everyone old and young alike does it capture who i am and who i want to be viewed or remembered as. Thats my last resort question when the i like it i dont etc easy questions dont work or rather i have a pile of maybe photos and am struggling to decide. Especially since i scan everything so i have the digital copy so even if i get rid of the physical version i still have it but idk theres something that feels almost wrong about throwing away photos especially the old physical kind that you took on disposible cameras with the wind up and had to give to a camera place for like 2 weeks at least before you could even see what you had... 😂 like its so much easier to delete new photos that take seconds on a phone. But anyway i hope this helps someone it was the final sort of swedish death cleaning motivation i needed like would i want my kids to have this when i die level of REAL and cuts through the clingy anxious feeling you can unnecessarily get towards things simply because theyre old or familiar not because you actual love them or find true value in them.

My husband and I got married in 2000, and we have a photo book for every year, up until we got digital cameras in 2008 or so. Then...we have hardly any printed pictures. I feel the need to print pictures so my daughter has pictures to look at. Most of the pictures of her are not accessible.

And everyone, please label pictures! Date, event, people. Sooo hard to do after years and years or someone dies.

This is very true!! I had a hard time with some of the pictures figuring out which son was which as my older 2 look a lot alike at certain stages! Thanks for sharing, Jan! 💐
