Hi Kim, I tried shade cloth for the first time today for some of my plants that get the intense afternoon sun. I’m curious, do you use shade cloth for your eggplants? I know they love heat, so does using shade cloth help or hurt their growth? Also, what percentage do you recommend?
@GardenDice
@GardenDice 6 дней назад
Hi Kim, one other question. It does get in the mid upper 90s here in Albuquerque, but the temperature cools down once the sun is down in the high dessert here. If the 90 temps are only for just few hours in the hotter part of the day, do you still recommend using shade cloth?

Hi Kim, If you put a plastic water bottle over the poles holding up your shade cloth they won’t poke through the cloth and they will be easier to adjust. I like your hydration station idea.

About 3 weeks ago, (June 17th) I used sheets to try and protect my garden from a hard frost. The low got down to 29 degrees. Things definitely got bit, and set back. Completely killed my cucumbers and butternut squash. 😢 Now just 3 weeks later, I’ll be using those same bed sheets to try and provide shade for our 104 degree forecast. Here’s hoping for the best! 🤞🏼🙏🏻

A lot of great Info as always. Shadecloth has been a must the last 2 years, not so much this year, 90F definitely drop tomato and pepper blossoms. Building more fungi in my garden beds, fungi not only sequester carbon, feed our plants, they hold a ton of moisture. Been wrapping my grow bags along a south facing fence with mylar blankets. Reflects 90% of the sun's rays, keeps the bags cooler and they do not dry out as fast. Stay Well!!!!

Great ideas on how to care for our beloved gardens in this awful heat wave. I live in Manteca, Ca. and it has been over 100 degrees for a week now and there is no end to the high heat yet. I like your straw idea. I have been picking huge Zucchini leaves to cover the soil in my planters. I love your shade cloth !! I just put cardboard over the tops of pots and veg beds. It has been 108 for 3 days and even hotter today ! Great and useful video that nobody else is covering. Do you try to save your zucchini plants through the heat wave or rely on succession growing like others ?? I try to keep what I have alive and happy. Shade cloth in the yard for sure - and a large umbrella for my deck plants. We can easily reach sustained triple digits during the summer- and the added sun barriers definitely save my plants. I LOVE that you're using the tan shade cloth variety. I don't have that yet - but I want to experiment to see if the lighter color is even more cooling than the typical black - aka reflective v absorbtion. Any thoughts on that? Great vid - thank you!
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 11 дней назад
Hey Ceecee! Always great to hear from you! I've been enjoying my tan shade cloth, but to be honest, I haven't noticed a significant difference compared to my black one. The main benefit for me is that it blocks more sunlight as it's 60%, (my black is 40%), which really helps in the hotter temperatures. Let me know how you find it when you give it a try - can't wait to hear your thoughts! Happy gardening under that shade! 🌞

Hey there! Composting is a fantastic way to nourish your garden naturally. Here's a beginner-friendly guide to get you started: Choose a Bin or Pile: You can compost in a bin, a designated area of your yard, or even a compost tumbler. Make sure it's at least 3 feet by 3 feet for effective composting. Add Ingredients: Composting is all about balance. Add "browns" (carbon-rich materials like leaves, cardboard) and "greens" (nitrogen-rich materials like kitchen scraps, grass clippings). Aim for a 3:1 ratio of browns to greens. Turn and Mix: Every couple of weeks, turn your compost with a pitchfork or compost aerator to aerate it and help it break down faster. This also helps distribute moisture and air evenly. Maintain Moisture: Your compost should be as moist as a wrung-out sponge. If it's too dry, add water; if too wet, add more browns. Patience: Composting takes time-about 2-6 months for finished compost, depending on conditions. You'll know it's ready when it's dark, crumbly, and smells earthy. Use Your Compost: Spread your finished compost around your garden beds as a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Your plants will love it! Remember, composting is a learning process, and you'll discover what works best for your garden over time. Enjoy the journey of creating nutrient-rich soil and happy gardening! Kim

I water my raised bed and containers with a hose and nozzle attachment like you did in the video. So when you say you water for 10/15 minutes at a time with the drip irrigation, what is that equivalent to with a nozzle like you used? How much water comes out in a drip irrigation compared to a hose and nozzle attachment? I hope this makes sense. Thanks for all the great videos! You help me so much.
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 11 дней назад
Hi there! 🌿 Thanks for your question and for watching my videos! When I mention watering with drip irrigation for 10-15 minutes, it’s designed to provide a slow, steady flow that deeply soaks the soil. With a hose and nozzle, you might need to water for a shorter time since it delivers water faster. To ensure your plants get enough water, check the soil moisture-water until it’s consistently moist 6-8 inches deep, a moisture meter really helps monitor this. Every setup is a bit different, so it might take a bit of experimenting. More info in my watering containers video. Keep up the great work in your garden! 🌻💧
