The skill of the drivers to navigate these massive trucks safely is amazing. Good on them for constantly bringing the necessities of life to those in the outback.

My dad would've loved to see this. A lifelong trucker, he used to drive doubles on the New York State Thruway before he passed in '88. Thank you for the video.

Up 'ere in Canada, we don't/can't run road trains. Doubles at best, in varying combinations depending on where you are. We have had A-trains, C-trains, and right now B-trains are quite common (for fuel tankers). Out in Western Canada, they've had "Rocky Mountain doubles" for years, one 48 or 53 up front, with a 28ft on the tail. Recently, the Eastern provinces have been allowing "LCV's" (long-combination vehicles) of 2- 53' trailers, using a pintle hook and converter dolly to tow the second unit. These are subject to quite strict limits, and can NOT deviate from set routes even when the big road is closed. If you had enough power and enough private property, I suppose the sky would be the limit, but just not on the public streets and roads. However, with our length restrictions, the weight of the cargo you can haul on major roads can be quite ridiculous, depending on your axle count and configuration. The term "quad" in North America would be interpreted as axle count under a unit. While tandems are obviously most popular, tri-axles, quads, and quints, (even more sometimes) are not unheard of. Most old-hands would call them "three-leggers" or "four-leggers". Carrying more weight isn't just a matter of buying wagons with more axles, though. More weight, or any sort of abnormality in your equipment simply equates to more money raped out of your hide by the Ministry of Transport. You pay before you play.

Technically none of these are actually quad road trains, there are combinations of ab ab , ba ab, but a quad road train is a full semi ( b trailer) dolly then another B and continues for 4 b trailers

@xxx-kash8713
@xxx-kash8713 5 лет назад
splengey you wouldn’t be able to attempt that let alone do it, these trucks are made for the outback hence why you don’t see them on city roads.
@apexpredator444
@apexpredator444 3 года назад
It's actually quite easy to reverse them if you know the tricks ( I just reversed on a weighbridge approximately 3 metres today ) but if you put a road train into a position where you are forced to reverse you're probably going to lose your job

What are the payloads these tractors are hauling?
@keithd5181
@keithd5181 6 лет назад
Not sure of the payload but GCM (Gross Combination Mass) can be up to around 170 tonnes I think with some of the 53 metre combinations. The payload would depend on the trucks parts a bit I would say.
@jordanfarrar9955
@jordanfarrar9955 5 лет назад
Keith D between 170-200ton depending on the load ;)

The normal standing for weight limits within Australia is 6 tonne on a steer axle, 16.5 tonne on an 8 tyre tandem group and 20.0 tonne on a 12 wheel tri axle group. So, the first image with the coca cola and the DTM logistics would be 119 tonne gross combination weight. The fuel tankers, as they are running all tri axle groups, that is 146 tonne on standard weights. The first one, based on the heavier tare due to road train requirements, would have a payload of about 75 to 80 tonne. The fuel tanker, well, that is beyond me, as am not sure of the tanker tares. However, the above is academic if the operators are no Higher Mass Limits, Performance Based Standards or Mass & Maintenance Management. All 3 schemes allow extra to be put on, but, you also have to have guarantees that you are not running heavy. Very hard to do when the enforcement agencies do not play by the rules for testing their equipment!
@apexpredator444
@apexpredator444 3 года назад
My payload today was 131.98 tons in a super quad hauling iron ore
@apexpredator444
@apexpredator444 3 года назад
The actual weights are, 6.5 on the steer and 23.5 on every other set, I drive a tri-drive super quad with a max weight ( GVM Gross Vehicle mass ) of 195.5 ton but it's almost impossible to completely max out each set of axles
