I’m a Muay Thai fighter. Any way to avoid this? Can any kind of training be done to prevent this?

This is a hard one. Mainly because repetitive trauma will cause swelling and potentially bleeding in the muscles. The fascia is a finite space and does not stretch so when the muscle gets big enough due to trauma/swelling, you will be at risk for compartment syndrome. In day to day life, usually this is never a problem. However, in mma it can very well pose an issue. Unfortunately some people May have more stiff/tight fascia than others. Things you can do to try to mitigate it is to make sure your connective tissue fascia system is as mobile as possible. Think soft tissue rolling, stretches etc.

In 2005 I had a fall that resulted in Compartment Syndrome, I was on the floor on my right side for over 6 hours before I got help, I was cut open in 11 places, 5 feet worth of incisions. I had 4 foot long incisions, 2 upper thigh, 2 lower thigh, also 2 incisions on my right forearm, and 5 on my hand. I was in the hospital for 3 months and almost lost my right arm, leg, and my life. This reminded me of how LUCKY I am to have survived, and how someone like Austin Hubbard can get back in the ring and fight after such an injury is simply incredible.

Glad you were okay following your accident! Yea him being able to go back to training after this was truly amazing. Athletes can do some crazy things - i think it's a combination of will power and training.

This happened to a friend after a tibial plateau fracture, in the calf. Had he gone to the wrong hospital he would have lost his leg, he was within the hour of losing it. Serious stuff.

Yea this is actually something we see with tibial fractures! He is a lucky man.

Same exact thing happened to me. My muscle was black and as soon as they relieved pressure it turned back to its normal color.

Scary stuff. I thought of that injury as an overuse calf injury.

yea for sure. The most unique part is that it was a thigh which is unusually and not commonly seen.

Your video is awesome! Love the energy and breakdown. Having suffered from a series of really bad leg kicks in sparring before I’ve had the same bloating of my upper thigh. I don’t think it was compartment syndrome but the pain and swelling lasted for almost 4-5 weeks.
