Extron Crosspoint Server Rack Setup + Cable Management

This is showing how a single full-height server rack can house 15x systems + 2x matrix switchers + 3x upscalers + multiple converters / transcoders / up/down scalers for use on professional RGB CRT's, AND handle upscaling to a modern 4K flatscreen. PLUS how to manage all those wires!
Forgot to mention two converters mounted on the back (right side) of the rack: Shinybow SB-2840 (to convert RGBS to YPbPr for use on consumer TV's), and the Audio Authority 9A65 (used for Wii and OG Xbox Component to RGBS for pro CRT monitors). Also forgot to mention the 3rd power strip (back, top - needed more plugs for all those converters!).

@@johnnyg8782 I purchased a 10-Pin 2.54mm Male to Female IDC JTAG ISP Cable Ribbon Wire to solve the issues with my TORO that seem to be bugging you. It works great as a flexible AV cable extension for the short dreamcast cable the behar bros supply. I also emailed the Behar bros about it and they said it was fine to use with their TORO device.
@johnnyg8782

I would LOVE something flexible! Do you have a link of where you got yours from? You would still have to have the inflexible one coming off the DC though, right? Since one end is the proprietary DC plug? Thanks.

This is so damn nice! Recently got an OSSC and I'm currently building a solution to switch between YPbPr and RGB on my 6th/7th gen consoles so I can switch between the OSSC and my B&O MX8000 without unplugging cables or having to get a converter. A nice addition to revive your Gamecube could be a Gameboy Player, which would allow you to play GB/C and GBA games, with Swiss' GBI it can even output 240p. But I'd rather switch out the motherboard of the GC to a European one to get RGB output from it. But anyways, I could never imagine ever putting together such an awesome rack, great work!

I'm not a gamer, but I am into vintage gear and video capturing from multi-formats from vintage cameras / VTR's....this is a real nice system that would be very awesome for that! Your detail work with the wires are amazing as well! ~Jack, VEG

Thanks Jack, it's appreciated. This took a LONG time (2+ years) to get it setup like this all organized nice. Next revision is to move this into a slightly shorter rack (been looking for the right one for over a YEAR now!) - this one is so big it can't clear my doorway (since it's a residential house, normal height doors) so it's stuck in this one room and I want to be able to move it to the living room where the 65" TV is for retro game upscaling!

@@johnnyg8782 My pleasure and most envious! When I have my new house built, I think I will use this video as a guide for my media capture room...that will be a few years down the road...but planning now...I understand about low trolling for that right piece of gear at the right price...do it often! :) 65" TV, very nice, maybe upgrade your sound amplification as well with powered sub-woofers, if you haven't already. ~Jack, VEG

I can't even get my PS2 in Genesis to work through the extron switcher! This looks like an amazing nightmare in LOL very awesome 👍
@johnnyg8782
@johnnyg8782 3 года назад
PS2 would need a sync stripper on the cable - Extron Crosspoint ALWAYS need clean sync (my only systems I need this on are PS1 and PS2 actually so it's not super common FYI as long as you get the right cables. Sega Genesis (my 3x model 1's at least) output clean/csync and I have no issue hooking them directly to the crosspoint. You can check out the RetroRGB.com articles on each system to see how to get clean sync out of each system.

Awesome setup! Quick question, I don’t see any distribution amps in this setup. Is the Crosspoint able to amplify the analog signal in the event you wanted to run one to many? Like maybe in a streaming scenario or something
@johnnyg8782
@johnnyg8782 5 лет назад
You can have 32 inputs running to 32 different inputs (or any scenario possible). I've had up to 12 different systems running to 12 different CRT's, along with 3x upscalers all at the same time.

Hey, you did some amazing work! Would love to see more about the remotes or changing settings over LAN. Are you using any rails in the rack or does everything seem solid? Can't wait to see more.
@johnnyg8782
@johnnyg8782 4 года назад
Are you talking about the iPad touchscreen remote control for the Extron Crosspoint switcher? I have a full tutorial on Shmups forum if you're interested in that. For the rails of the rack, the majority of the switchers/transcoders are rack mountable and are screwed in. All the consoles sit on shelves which are also rack mounted so everything is all metal and extremely solid.

John Gee, thanks. Any issues with sync and the extron? I heard a sync stripper will help with PlayStation, but I also heard people still having problems. Did you make your own SCART cables for each console?

@@sdunc8418 I've had zero problems with PS1 and PS2 with a cable with built in sync stripper running to the Extron Crosspoint. And no, I didn't make most of these cables, bought them from places like retro-access and retrogamingcables.

That dummy card for the TG-16, is that just a regular game with some tape on the connectors? I was considering doing something similar with my setup.
@johnnyg8782
@johnnyg8782 5 лет назад
The connector was actually too tight to fit tape in there so I cut off the end of a broken game and it just lays there.

@@vacrmh4127 I would have to count, but just enough space to pull out the cartridge, or open the drive door and slip in a CD/DVD (which most all are diskless now, but I can pull out the SD cards at least). It is tight though.

Did I see a Panasonic CRT on the desk? How did you modify the cables to get RGB to initialize on that TV? I think it needs a 5V input on pin 8 or 16 of the SCART, but I'll be damned if I can find a video of anyone doing this. Thanks.
@johnnyg8782
@johnnyg8782 2 года назад
I'm in the US so not many SCART televisions around here... that Panasonic is a widescreen professional (PVM) multiformat CRT monitor, it has BNC connections for RGBS, RGBHV, YPbPr, CV, YC, etc. etc.

Does your smx hdmi switcher have video and audio come out of the hdmi? Or does the audio only come out of the Phoenix connectors?
@johnnyg8782
@johnnyg8782 3 года назад
The SMX is a multi-plane switcher, meaning that every board of inputs (mine has four I believe) acts on it's own, and does NOT interface with the other boards in that same switcher. So when I put in an HDMI signal with both audio and video, that only comes out the HDMI out of the HDMI board - NOT over the audio of the audio-only board with Phoenix connectors as well, since the boards don't interface with each other in any way.

Good stuff dude. Don't discount the Gamecube yet. There are cheaper (under $100) third-party cables coming out on the market now. If you have a Gamecube with a digital out port all you need is the cheap Gameboy Player and the free Game Boy Interface homebrew software. This is the best way to play GBA and GBC games and the second best way to play OG GB games. (Super Game Boy 2 is better).
