the only this easy about EZPASS is how easy they can rip you off. I avoid EZ Pass and I can avoid most toll roads. EZ PASS is not worth all the headaches. If you get overcharged and I think even if you file bankruptcy, the state can still ban you from renewing your car registration. IMO Tolls are illegal. Think about it. You pay gas tax. Gas tax pays for the roads and sometimes property taxes pay for roads. So why would I pay a usage tax on top of the taxes I am paying already. I live in NJ and the Garden State Parkway. Back in 1950's that GSP was called State 444. That route was to be toll free and stated that the tolls were only temporary and the tolls would be removed when the tolls paid for the construction of the road (444/GSP). So taxes paid to built that road, and we are still have to pay for a road that are or our parents paid for in taxes. IMO toll roads are just a way for states to legally double tax us.
1. Monthly statements are a right. Customers should not get charged a fee to know what they are being billed for and they shouldn't have to wait 3 months to get it. 2. Only charge the customer once per month. There's no reason to be charging our credit card every time we go though a toll or when our account funds drop below the minimum in a single month, let a lone every day or week. 3. The statement should show the total spent on tolls for the month, not just the beginning and ending balance 4. The app and website should have a section for disputing specific charges. not just making a general complaint. 5. There needs to be interstate standardization. Every state that accept E-pass should follow the same rules for charging, billing and customer accounting, and use the same company to handle it all. 6. Every toll needs to have clear signs showing the toll charge before the next turn off that road, so drivers have a chance to opt out. 7. EZ-pass should not be involved in traffic enforcement, just toll and parking fee collection.
they still haven't fixed the problem. I went over the George Washington bridge in both direction only twice but got charged 4 times. They charged me $20 dollars each time even though the toll is only $4.50 and only in one direction. I also got charged on days I wasn't even driving, for parking at JFK for 3 hours even though I was only in the parking lot for 1 hour and they never sent me a statement to explain any of it. I sent an email to complain and never got a response.
Overcharges are a pain to deal with. But at the first sign of trouble getting billed for trips you did NOT make at all, your very first course of action should be to go to the DMV and demand a new set of License Plates with new numbers. That way, any fraudulent use of your old number will be easy to dispute as you have proof that those old plates are no longer in use or registered to you.
