He did a few videos back ... The defence and the judge had a bit back and forth outside the jury the judge actually put him in check about the implications that only men interviewed Ezra and she was mistreated etc the judge called it a campaign actually...😅
Exactly. The Jodi Arias case is one that’s crazy for defence objections. They were using them to put the prosecutor off his game. I so wanted the judge to refuse them but she didn’t, darn it,
@@lessthanahome She said she was drunk and in her diary wrote she was taken advantage of by 2 men while he was away. John Mengal believed it because he was ready to "kill" the first guy and encouraged her to make a report. So, even John at one point believed she had been taken advantage of.
@@lessthanahome I get the feeling based on all of the testimony I have heard that Jason might not have been paying attention to her as much as she wanted. He invited her to play Dungeons and Dragons which she didn't enjoy, but he continued playing it, and he played frequently. (What mid-30's guy is still playing that game?) She was left alone. She was very young and possibly in her first serious relationship. I don't know what girl would enjoy being abandoned regularly for a stupid game.
It's a good defense. All the defense would need is one juror who thinks Ezra was driven to instabliity with her roller coaster relationship with Jason to cause a hung jury. The attorney would not be doing her job if she didn't fight for that result.
@@karls432 I agree. I was actually suprised to find out that the defense claimed Ezra had acted in self-defense against Alex. I had watched the trial videos out of order and felt like there was no way anyone would believe self-defense. I'm guessing the attornies advised Ezra to not attempt that defense but she chose to go with it in hopes of being acquitted.
@@musicloverchicago437 I’m finding her an absolutely fascinating look into the narcissistic sociopath and how they work, like surely she should have known that trying to one up the lawyers with petty ‘wins’ isn’t going to show her as the victim she’s pretending to be, but she literally couldn’t help it, she couldn’t keep up any persona she tried, couldn’t show any sorrow, and was constantly scowling at her attorneys for not helping her, that and the loving looks when her ex took the stand, she literally has no idea at all how to act, she’s got by in life by mimicking who she’s with and playing the victim…. Crazy that she could con everyone into falling for her when she clearly doesn’t have any feelings at all.
Seems like the coffee shop crew gOt way way more gossipy and dramatic when Ezra started hanging out there. SHE was the center of it all. AlsO Jason probably trying to sound so mature and together because of being humiliated and embarrassed about how many times he stayed with a crazy cheating young girlfriend and fell for her gaslighting and drama.
Elon Musk got got by Amber Turd. I think it’s safe to say even the most intelligent men lose all common sense for that one thang. Not defending him, just sayin.
She's allowed to ask leading questions, it's not her witness. Don't be embarrassed though, even the prosecutor forgot when he made the ghost objection 😂
The defense attorney is really antagonistic and it's like she's blaming Jason Mengal for all Ezra's troubles and woes and trying to lay the cause of the murder directly on his shoulders! She's really over stepping!
They also tried to do blame Ezra's gal friend, Jenna Vandezant, in the same sleazy way, by implying that if Jenna hadn't been encouraging Ezra to endure a face-to-face resolution of the relationship with Alex (breakup or whatever), then Alex wouldn't be dead. Apparently Ezra had previously opted to text Jason Mengal to breakup. I guess the attorney is alleging Ezra never would have gone to talk to Alex in person had Jenna not encouraged her to do so. Jenna told Ezra that she, herself, thought it to be cowardly/disrespectful to not settle things in person (or something like that). It's also cowardly and disrespectful to take a man to the back seat of a car, with all the implications that brings being in the back seat on a rural road in the middle of the night, only to stab him to death for no good reason, and then to smear his good name by implying he was se×ually perverted/abusive and an alleged rap¡st.
I think the defense attorney kind of has to because how nice he is makes Ezra look worse and it's the defense attorney's job to cut down whatever makes their client look bad. I don’t think she's hurting Jason any. He can handle it.
This defense attorney seems to be a miserable woman. The snotty remarks can't look very professional to a jury. "I have a foundation...like I do for everything else." 48:50
When a defense attorney has nothing, they have to do whatever they can to make their client look less awful. Fortunately, the jury didn't take the bait. Neither did the judge at sentencing.
They really wanted to paint everyone else the bad guy, but the bad guy. Jason is a peaceful person. He got cheated on and was like "you guys do you I just want the truth and space from the drama". I feel for the guy. Edit: Jason: "She lied a lot" Defense: "I ask that be stricken" Judge "answer will stand"
Ok I’m going to take back some of the “stupid” comments I’ve made about Jason. Because whether he’s adeptly frustrating the defense or that’s just his personality- I’m really loving the way he is not allowing lady defense lawyer to twist his words or meaning of his past statements For that I say Bravo 🎉 Jason. 😂
“How old are you” “I’m not sure I don’t keep track, I was born April 6 1985” and then looks at her with doe eyes I’m sorry but that was the statement of a true simpleton
He speaks + acts the same way with prosecutor + defence.. its got 2 b fristr7ing 4 the defence. Shes trying 2 get reactions + its not happening.. well done jason
I feel like part of why she didn’t want Jason in the room when she had the abortion and also maybe why she had it to begin with; is because it wasn’t his baby. She cheated on him multiple times, with multiple people I’m not sure she even knew who’s baby it was. He’s an idiot, in my mind for staying with her after the first time she cheated. Once a cheater, always a cheater. Very seldom do people who cheat, ever just do it once and done. They almost always do it repeatedly, with everyone they’re with.
My first thought was that she wasn't even pregnant to begin with and that's why she didn't want him there. My second thought was if she was pregnant - the timeline wouldn't match up with Jason and she would be caught....she is a cheating, lying, mentally deranged, psychotic narcissist.
I have watched almost all the court trial at this point and I find the shift in the demeanor of the witnesses when the defense attorney's begin questioning them very interesting. I, personally, can't stand the defense attorney's because they come across very condescending, contradictive, passive aggressive, and they were very arrogant. When I had initially heard of this case I'd only seen parts of the prosecution questioning Ezra and I thought he was stern and impatient. However, after watching them all in action, questioning multiple witnesses, my opinion of the older male prosecutor has changed. It's interesting to see how many people seem open when speaking to the prosecution but become guarded and defensive when questioned by the defense. I don't think the defense did Ezra any favors in the eyes of the jury either. It was so frustrating because they were always asking for people's opinions but then objected every single time they thought the prosecution was going to ask about someone's opinion. I think they rubbed everyone the wrong way especially when you add the way they questioned people. Ezra, who they dress up in an attempt to make her appear small, weak and venerable, was exactly the opposite of those things. She sat there doodling and ignoring the majority of the trial except mooning of Jason and coming across like she was being interviewed for Ms. America or something when questioned by her attorney. It's was very disturbing. Seeing the horrific images of Alex and the crime scene had no affect on her whatsoever. I think Ezra was an actor in her own show. She acted how she thought other people wanted her too or she basically picked up the traits of those around her and manipulated everyone by lying and faking anxiety. She is a psychopath in my opinion. I hope she is never released from prison.

I fully agree, a the exception of your term, "venerable," which was probably just a spellcheck thing, as I'm sure you meant vulnerable! However try as they might, that was always going to be an impossible reach! Great comment! 👍 My issue is, that at nearing 40, is this guy ever going to grow up? Are any of them? Everyone knows for example, that using the term "negative," & " roger! " 🙄 is inappropriate, & juvenile! Buddy, we know you're a military medic. Get over it. It's just a bad look to my way of thinking but...maybe it's just me! He seems like he should know the requirements of court, but hey, whatever!
I have a problem when the defense attorney said “ you were out of town when John assaulted Ezra “ OMG the state should’ve launched an objection that would stop a clock. It was never proven that John assaulted her in any way. The state failed in that area. As for watching this cross examination I had to fast forward through because this woman is so inept, so rude, so nasty I couldn’t even take the sound of her voice anymore. I have never seen such a unlikable person in my life! The implications and insinuations directed at Jason are reprehensible! No wonder attorneys have such a bad rep!😠
I agree it’s totally out of order. I think they dropped the charges if there was any with John because it was proven in text that it was consensual. She only said it because she got caught cheating. Also what is up with this group of “friends” who think it ok to sleep with “friends” girlfriend or exs
Defense attorney repeating " I don't mean to be rude I don't mean to be rude I don't mean to be rude" Well you ARE remarkably condescending and rude. Her tone drives me nuts , I kept needing to take breaks. Can't imagine how annoying it must have been for everyone in the court room who didn't have a pause button. ' ___ ' Her attempts to make a villain of Jason made my skin crawl. He isn't the manipulative murderer in this case, her client is.
I have no idea how she managed to keep her cool when Jason refused to answer even a simple yes or no question. Like, do you even know where you are Jason? Do you know your own name?
"I don't mean to be rude" is just like "I don't mean to be racist" or "no offense". It's used by ignorant people to try and mask they're blatant disregard for social norms in relation to their statements.
One thing the defense successfully achieved- showing the jury just how kind and patient Jason is even in the face of unwarranted rudeness from a borderline incompetent attorney.
Yeah he’s so kind. In the past He rode around for hours in a bus killing time as his kid was being aborted AND he paid for that killing. What a great guy❣🤮

This defense is NOTHING BUT TRYING TO DISTRACT FROM THE FACTS AND EVIDENCE IN THE CASE! I hate when defense attorneys pull this bull-crap and this female defense attorney has a voice that's so irritating and goes right through my head. The male defense attorney is downright creepy. What a team!
I LOVE this witness and the way he got the defense so flustered. He's patient, wanting to make sure his words aren't minced and genuinely doesn't care if she's pissy about it. He's great.
He’s a weirdo. He can’t answer a simple yes or no question and has to over explain every single answer. I hate this guy. I’ll bet he still hangs out at that coffee shop with teenagers. He’s a creep
Part of it though, and I can see this as someone who likes to get to the point, is her frustration that regardless of ease of question, he simply cannot just answer with a Y or a N. Its exhausting and this could have taken 1/4th of the time. Plus she pegged him as a guy who proclaimed to be a "nice guy" like a savior sort. She doesn't buy it. Look, his behavior has nothing to do with the fact that EMc murdered Alex, of course, but he is not some hero he makes himself out to be.
@@assassindelasaucisse.4039 Proper defense in a situation like that is talk your client into expressing all the remorse they're capable of, and asking for literally any kind of plea bargain. Not sure if this is an attorney whose ambition is just that much greater than her intelligence, wisdom, and talent, or if she's getting a big check from someone (though I really can't imagine who would have that scale of money to drop on McCandless's defense), or if she is somehow actually so bad at this that she honestly bought into McCandless's lies... Maybe she has some kind of emotionally-rooted negativity toward guys like Jason, or Alex, or favorability toward people like McCandless. A vigorous, effective defense is critical to the function of the court system, but this was such an obvious murder that the most effective defense would be to try to get your client a plea deal for second degree intentional homicide and a sentence of 20 years, out on good behavior in 8-10. Maybe even less if she puts on her most contrite face for the judge. Really bad case, made worse by a bad strategy, and poorly executed on top of that.

I think Ezra's lawyer making a case that John was not there when Ezra needed him most during some extreme traumas (abortion and rape) and added to her trauma. How he didn't even talk to her about the baby, then he didn't sleep with her or comfort her after...slept elsewhere and then she claims John assaulted her while she was drunk and yet John stayed friends...etc. etc. THEN her lawyer successfully proved that even John was ready to kill his friend who "raped" her when she was 20 and drunk, in his care while John was gone in Feb... Basically, her lawyer seems to be making a very good timeline leading up to how she snapped. In Ezra's journal she had TWO men who took advantage of her.
@user-ui5gm5rq7j lol! 2 men took advantage of her? Nonsense. She had a relationship. Made choices. She cheated. Made choices. She told stories of rape etc to excuse her bad behaviour. No evidence any of that happening. Only her say so. Amazing how a woman can claim abuse etc as an excuse for killing someone yet let a man say they went through traumatic excuses it is negated. She chose to kill. Even if John believed she was raped and made verbal declarations he wanted to kill the accused, he did not. Many men have believed women and helped them kill the alleged abuser / rapist and it turned out to be lies. Just as Ezra used those same lies to kill someone and then try to tuin his reputation. The victim blaming that occurs when the victim is a man is astounding.
Who wants to date someone whose parents are YOUR AGE? All of this screams dysfunction. ALL. OF. IT. Also, the female attorney is leading, opinionated, speculative and, quite frankly, not good at cross-examination. She's trying to base her opposition on speculative feelings instead of facts.
Her Defence team had a really tough job tbf, but that attorney was absolutely awful. I've read quite a few comments praising Jason Mengal for being "smart, articulate, well put together" (and the like). Sorry! But when anyone (over 5 years) has difficulty giving his age... I'm not inclined to consider that "smart or well put together". Then, answers like "which father are you referring to?", (given that neither Mengal or Ezra had EVER MET her biological father), strike me as foolishly evasive... What 'father' could a lawyer, in the context of this case, be referring to?? Mengal's description of his role as a medic is another point of a less than an "articulate or well considered" response. While it's clear (in my mind) that Ezra is NO BABE IN THE WOODS - she is a mentally disturbed, manipulative and dangerous individual (much like Jodi Arias) - Mr Mengal seems to WANT to be SEEN as everybody's "good friend"! He LOVED everybody, including the victim, just "didn't like" some of the things that they did (that hurt him). If Jason can't even be honest with HIMSELF... how genuinely smart or well put together can he be?? In his place, I'd be feeling more than a bit responsible about the death of Alex Woodworth. Ezra was living with her mother... but Jason Mengal "still wanted to take care of her" despite calling Ezra a liar less than a minute later?? The hubris!! I'm glad that Mengal played some part in putting Ezra behind bars, but can't overcome my suspicions and dislike for this man.

It doesn't excuse her crime but the defense is trying to prove that this narcissist poser contributed to her emotional instability! Breaking up with her. clearly knowing she still wants him in a relationship , continuing to sleep with her, continues to exchange "I love Yous" with her despite knowing what she means by it, etc. He abused a mentally disturbed young woman. I do not think Ezra has love for anyone. She has the ability to remove herself from emotional issues. She will protect herself from feeling vulnerable.
I don't find him nearly as endearing as you do. I want to be clear: none of what she did is his fault at all. That said, there is a reason guys like this go for much younger girls. A woman his age, say mid 30s, likely does not have roommates (not in Eau Claire) nor do they essentially live their lives at a coffee shop. He is super immature IMO. Add the fact that he tries very hard to portray the "nice guy" shows me that he still acts like a teen. Of course add the D&D aspect.
I find it so annoying that Jason keeps over explaining his answers- I understand that he’s on the hot seat but he doesn’t need to explain everything in detail
He’s a good guy and you can tell he really did love her and still does. I really enjoyed watching this witness. I love that he wouldn’t let the defence lawyer lead him to say what they wanted him to say. This was gruelling and the defence attorney was rude. He did a great job.
I can’t stand the thinly veiled (and ultimately impotent) hostility demonstrated by this Defense lawyer…her passive aggressive statements irk me for some reason.
Ok what? Dude seems to have his life together. Handsome. Meanwhile Ezra can’t afford her own coffee and is a 6 on her best day Why waste time with a journal writing artsy loser more than a quick pump and dump? Like how cringe is it to be the type that says they have an “ancient love”. The type that self diagnoses an anxiety disorder
That’s the fascinating thing… she is a pretentious, trendy attention whore who thinks she’s too good for everyone… and I agree she’s a pump and dump AT BEST. I see how she could’ve roped in Alex as he was equally as pretentious. But Jason is a good looking army veteran who seems to have his life together. And then he’s with pronoun lady with the fake name so you have to kind of second-guess all of it.
I don't understand why she killed Alex. It doesn't make sense to me. He had moved on. Apparently he was no longer pursuing her & she had broken off with him. The motuve is very cloudy, vague. It doesn't make sense at all. This was a rage filled killing. Why was she so full of rage & hatred at Alex? Make it make sense 😔
@@mad7fisher it doesn't make much sense to me even with that explanation tbh. Judging by Jason's personality I think should could have roped him back in either way but I think it was also a hit to her ego. She is definitely odd.
I've never disliked ALL sides of a conflict so much. Jesus Christ. I can't imagine why ANY of these people would have ever wanted to be friends with any other of these people. Alex was the lucky one. Honestly I'm starting to think he stabbed himself sixteen times to get away from his friend group. And then the defense attorney said "maneuverisms." HEADDESK.
I'm with you on that. You have a barely legal teen and 3 grown men who took advantage of her IMO. I'm not saying Alex deserved to die or anything (I don't really know what the facts are) but this jerk took her to abort their baby then wouldn't even stay with her when she needed him most...then the 2 guys he left her with provided booze and slept with her. They are all screwed up in my book.
I do not like this guy...why is he hanging around young adults. He gives me the creeps. And by no means do I like Ezra she is very disturbing. She did the crime now she must live with the conviction.
The defense is being rude but that's kinda part of there job. I think it hurt her case though. I mean I'd want to convict her for having her as a lawyer
This attorney is cruel. I get she has a job but to be brutally malicious like this isn't a good look. She is the type of lawyer that would defend a child abuser knowing he was not innocent and being so brutal to the child on the stand then the child goes home and kills thenmselves.. only bringing it up because I experienced it first hand. I respect everyone has the right to defense but to be cruel and mean to witnesses on this level is beyond going too far. She is rude to the judge also. She KNOWS her client is guilty so trying to treat everyone like they are low life monsters after the trauma and pain they have gone through is low. She isn't doing any favors to her client. Right or wrong if the jury doesn't like her they will subconsciously not like the client. Both her and the guy that is defending Ezra have portrayed themselves as uncaring and slimy... and disrespectful to the judge and victims.
I love how much he is irritating the defense 😂 She’s getting so annoyed and he’s definitely not doing it on purpose he’s just being genuine and seems like he doesn’t have an agenda.
Maybe the lady defense lawyer just didn't think the defendant should get away with it, so she was super off-putting. I can't imagine her acting this way, expecting to win.
@chumchum4393 I encourage you to listen to all of the testimony with an open mind. Do it as though you were a juror. You will start to question your initial assessment of Ezra.
