Yes it was a rocket. The pilots that I knew that flew it said exactly the same: "it was like trying to fly an overpowered rocket with tiny wings. It wasn't a bad plane - just the most unforgiving. As long as you flew it straight and fast everything was fine, as soon as you had to manouver you had to watch for every vibration or you could go into pieces in seconds." (direct quote). At least that was our (Italian) experience.

And yet the similar MIG-21 was also a rocket but didn't have the same maneuverability problems.
@darkest_eclipse8271

@@atomicskull6405 the standard speeds of the mig-21 wasn’t nearly as fast as the f-104. The mig-21 can maneuver well because it was designed to be able to do some sort of maneuvering and you can see that in its wing design. While the f-104 was purely built for speed, so minimal wings and a tail I don’t know very much about and its reasons for it for lowest possible drag. Kinda like that Rick and morty meme “come on, in and out, 20 minute adventure.”

@@darkest_eclipse8271 The Mig 21 also bleeds a lot of energy and slows down because of the delta wing design. That is why the 104 can easily outrun it. Unforgiving is an understatement. At mach... a quarter ounce of side stick would roll it. The three basic rules for the 104 were 1) don't stall it 2) don't ever stall it 3) don't ever ever ever ever stall it. It doesn't recover from stalls and standard procedure was to bail out before 10K...because you would be a high speed lawn dart.

@@atomicskull6405 Yeah the f-104’s had significantly better energy retention, at about 30k feet, the f-104 could top out at 1,550 mph, while even impressive still at 100,000 feet it could still meet 1,400 mph, with impressive climb performance to boot. According to the Britannica. It was build as an interceptor and it was pretty much the best at it, it’s ability to get away from fights was pretty good too.

Good video. FYI there is a flap/slat setting that will allow a 104 to beat an F-5 in a knife fight. Had a friend the flew a F-104 at Nellis for DACT training (MiG-21 simulation). First DACT lesson for F-15 pilots at the time was against the F-104. Most F-15 pilots would go vertical and the F-104 would stay right with them. If fact he complained he had to slow the F-104 down in the vertical to keep the F-15 in the gun sight. :-) It was a good first lesson for the Eagle drivers to see a picture of them in the F-104's gunsight. Second story: The Red Flag guys were at the Officer club and the Top Gun Instructors were there and a "discussion" centered how the TG guys in their F-5 could beat all comers in a knife fight. So a bet was made. Navy asked what they would be flying and when told F-104 they laughed their asses off. Next day, they met and the F-104 was able to latch into the F-5's tail and stay there. Studying the manual he had found a the Flap/slats could be down at a high speed that gave it an amazing turn rate. It became standard training for the F-104 (I think only the Italians were still flying them at the time). The way you flew in the video was perfect for how to fly and dominate in the F-104. My friend would be proud, he sure loved the F-104.

Nice simulator. If you allow me some criticism even if it is a nice job: Unfortunately the performance you show is relative to the clean configuration with no tip tank and missiles. With all that load shown in the video the performance was about an half of that. The stall was, generally, without any vibration and any nose-down effect. There was the Kicker system before that and after, if you insist, there is the Pitch-up falling by tail in a spin. the cockpit was a little different with two artificial horizons and the angle of attack indicator was different (the scale was 0 to 5). The maximum speed for the gear out was 260 and for the flaps not in movement was 520 kts limited at 480 .

The 104 is one of my favorite fighters and is under-represented in flight sims, so I'm super excited for the EFM update. I was inspired to learn how to make missions when I saw that this was coming out, so I'll be releasing some and hopefully there will also be some multiplayer servers who enable the mod so we don't all have to fly it alone! Also hoping for that awesome-looking NF-104A mod to become available, I have plans for it.

Yeah, I think if we get a few guys to have specialized F-104 squadrons, there would be specialized MiG21 squadrons with a sole purpose of hunting 104s. If the 104 pilot knows what he is doing you'll usually need 2 MiG-21s to get the 104. I hope missions have a lot of incoming bombers. It would be fun to play cat and mouse with MiGs

Excellent, Excellent video GVad. I'd like to add a little to the F-104 experience. My father flew the CF-104 (+CF-5, RF-4C, and many others) out of CFB Cold Lake. Was an IP and Demo pilot the summers of 70', 71' and spring of 72'. Was gone all the time doing airshows all over North America and gave this up when I was born in the base hospital June of 72'. As an IP, he would take students up in a CF-104D with tip tanks on a max performance climb, leveling off (not zoom climb) at 40,000 ft in 90 seconds. T/O flaps or maneuver flaps are good to 550 kts or M1.8. Love to see you re-fly the mission using the T/O flaps with turning with the 21. The CF-104 used the -7 J79 giving it 15,800 lbs thrust. The S model used the -19 J79, giving it 18,900 lbs of thrust. Have the devs read the article by Walt BJ called "Ruminations of the F-104"? 73,000 ft, M2.0 with 3/4 AB sipping 100 lbs of fuel a minute. This article is eye-watering to say the least as to the true performance of the 104. Have you read the article by Andy Bush about 2v1, F-104s against the F-15?

Just for the historical correctness: Fighterbomberwing 32 in Lechfeld was always a pure air-to-ground wing which is also emphasized through the bomb carried by an eagle in the wing crest. Its neighbour wing though, Figher Wing 74 in Neuburg (Donau) was (and still is, with Eurofighters today) the designated air defense wing for southern Germany. Two more minor debriefing points. a) the 104 (at least the german ones) never had a HUD and b) the 104 always deployed their drag chute after landing to preserve the brakes.
@muttleyjones2
@muttleyjones2 2 года назад
One more historical point, it was because of the deaths of so many German pilots in the 104 that it got its name, the widowmaker. Oh yes one more thing, Boeing bribed many highly placed people in NATO countries in order to sell the F-104 to their Air Forces. By many accounts, the UK had a very good aircraft ready for production but couldn't compete with Boeing. I'm not positive but it may have been the SR-177.
@papaschlumpf5894
@papaschlumpf5894 2 года назад
The problem was that, sitting directly at the assumed front line, Germany wanted to make a multi role fighter plane out of the 104. Something it was not built for. Carrying bombs, passing under the radar, even extreme low level flying over sea to launch anti ship missiles. So in German service, the 104 too often got into situations too risky for that unforgiving ballerina.
@muttleyjones2
@muttleyjones2 2 года назад
@@papaschlumpf5894 No disrespect intended to German pilots, I would expect them to have very good training, but your comments are perfectly correct they wanted too much from the aircraft.
@papaschlumpf5894
@papaschlumpf5894 2 года назад
@@muttleyjones2 You were (and are) completely right. The German minister of defence, Franz Josef Strauss, wanted this aircraft to kinda "make Germany great again" (He also toyed with the idea of nuclear weapons for Germany) It is still unknown until today what was done to make him fall in love with the 104, rumors had and have it he was bribed, as you mentioned. He had no idea of modern flight technology and it was he who intended to use he 104 as that multi role fighter. (the Luftwaffe leaders wanted a fast, high flying interceptor against soviet bombers, exactly what the starfighter was, and so the luftwaffe officers saw the 104 as the ideal plane for what THEY wanted. Many of them, including Erich Hartmann, the top scoring fighter ace of all time, did not want the 104 as a multi role fighter) And so shortly after WW2 the german pilots were as well not used to such an aircraft. All those reasons together made the 104 the infamous widowmaker. When Johannes Steinhoff, another WW2 fighter ace, became inspector of the Luftwaffe in 1966, he massively changed training and technical issues in the Luftwaffe. From then on the accident rate with the 104 rapidly fell to normal NATO standard, in spite of the ongoing "ab"use of the 104.
@MrFusselig
@MrFusselig 2 года назад
Also, they had the planes and the pilots to fly, but they did not have the logistics to deal with the planes. Experienced ground crews and even hangars were missing, so even in winter, the F-104G was often standing outside in the cold and rainy weather. A condition this dainty plane wasn't built for, which surely contributed to many of the technical failures.

From everything I've ever heard about the F-104, this was the story. Lockheed's chief of design Kelly Johnson talked to pilots returning from tours in the Korean War, flying F-86 against Mig-15s. Their biggest complaint was that the Sabre did not have the speed or altitude capability to catch the Migs, who would only engage when they had every advantage. In case you don't know, the Mig-15 was slightly slower than the Sabre, but it was lighter and could fly at a higher altitude. To paraphrase them, "Give us the speed and altitude we need and we'll knock down every Mig in the sky!" They were willing to forgo maneuverability for that. So Kelly said he would give them all the speed and altitude they could handle. So no, it was not a great dogfighter. It's short wings didn't allow it to sustain turns, and it's high mounted horizontal stabilizer could cause a pitchup at high angles of attack. The strategy was to come in fast, shoot, zoom, immelmann and do it again. You keep the enemy below you, not letting them get a clean shot, and just keep using speed and altitude. Basically the same strategy that P-38 pilots used against Zeroes in WW2. The original design of the F-104 did not even include radar. It was a day fighter. When the US Air Force got fed up with it, Lockheed sold it outside the US, and the version the Germans and Italians made where basically interceptors, and of course were fitted with radar and Sparrow missiles. But that was not their original intent.

Thanks! Keep in mind when this was done it was the first EFM release and drag was a bit off. The updated versions have a bit more drag so the climb angle is different, but the speed numbers are accurate, climb at mach 0.9, since mach 0.95 to 1.15 create a lot of drag.

Nice to see you giving the F-104 credit for performing its design role correctly. The F-104 is a similar design to the MiG-21: both are point defense interceptors. Neither are dogfighters. Stay far, far away from that bomber stinger. Looks like DCSW hasn't implemented it anyway. Without missiles, you're not likely to kill bombers with a gun. Their defensive armament will see to that. It's hardly likely that the F-104 (or MiG-21, for that matter) will ever likely see their counter-part as a bomber escort. Both are waaay too short ranged for that..

I kept waiting for the tail guns on the Tu-22 to kick off - as of spring 2022 they're definitely implemented. I wish ED would bring them online for more of the aircraft that should have them. The B-52H, IL-76, Tu-95, etc already have the turrets modeled, for pete's sake! It would make these kind of Cold War bomber intercept missions much more interesting/realistic. I'm a dedicated MiG-21 driver, and shooting down whole flights of B-52's with the cannon is too easy. Fun, but too easy.

Totally new territory for DCS and flight sims in general; F-104 performance. One of the most important gauges is the Mach Meter. Would be incredible to superimpose the following 4 gauges in the corners of the screen: 1. Mach Meter 2. Fuel Flow 3. Fuel Quantity 4. Altimeter According to the charts, the 104 burns 350 lbs a minute at Mach 2 @ 35,000ft. What was your fuel flow when you engaged the 21? 250 lbs a minute? There is absolutely nothing like this in DCS or history, and keeping the jet within specific and tight parameters, guarantees success in its role as an interceptor. Honestly GVad, can't wait now to see the S model launch an AIM-7 at Mach 2 at 70,000ft. Will be able to outrange any AMRAAM fired at a "slow mover" at "low altitude". Cheers!

Once at 45,000ft, look at the Mach! And this is with the G model (16,000 lbs thrust). The S model with 17,500/18,900 lbs thrust will massively eclipse this. My father was limited to nuclear strike on the deck; 540 kts under 100 ft and of course when "clean" (shhhh... its a secret) took it out over 700kts @ 50 ft, but never trained in the high altitude, high Mach environment as shown here. Please, more content like this and, be sure to drop T/O flap in the turns to add an extra 1G and decrease radius. Will be interesting to see how much drag and speed loss T/O flaps applies.

F104 wasnt developed as a interceptor for Bombers, it end up been good in this task because of its light weight and powerfull engines, but it lacked the radar and missiles for a headon attack when introduced. The design was created after talking with F86 pilots in Korea where most asked for a faster plane that could fly higher and climb fast, simples as that, at least the 104s that served as it was supposed, as a pure fighter.

The F-104 out-fought everything from that time period. Computer simulations have shown that the faster jet did much better during the age of guns, since it could control the pace of the fight, leaving and re-entering battle as desired. I have like 10 F-104 books, but they all seem to have the same pictures. Art books have provided me a much-needed escape from real life. When life was difficult I'd set up my easy chair with coffee, a desk lamp and a stack of art books beside me. They kept me going during the hardest times. Amazingly, looking an the flight manual and comparing the flight envelope curves, above 450knots the 104 G could turn with any F-4 B/C/D/K and N. The slatted phantom were slightly better below Mach 1 but above the speed of sound that the 104 was probably most agile plane of it's era, may be with the exception of the F106 which could partially overcome the moving of the aerodynamic centre by displacing the fuel inside the tanks.. The secret to do well with the 104 was energy- energy and energy again. Get slow and you are dead.

F-104 isn't just an interceptor but also a bomber itself. While it couldn't carry much in the way of payload, it didn't need to in the age of thermonuclear bombs (pre-ICBM era). I wonder if we'll see missions like this too, not just interception but ones that focus on its use as a nuclear deterrent.

Not how German 104's flew, but ok, whatever. Cycling in Germany and a German 104 came haring overhead at less than 250 feet being chased by a pair of American F4's, jinking for all it was worth but not just accelerating away from them like it could have. Disappeared over a ridge in the distance. About ~10 minutes later a solo F4 from the previous pair came screaming back over the ridge, going hell for leather, being chased by 5 104's. Someone had been playing Bait & Kill. It was glorious.

Mig
@Only_God_Is_Allah_SWT
@Only_God_Is_Allah_SWT 2 года назад
When defending in turn fight, half 90° barrel roll downwards, nose up until you level up, go high speed under the pursuer (attacker), then nose up, go above him then plunge at him from above. If he fires missile at you, keep on going down until the missile catches the trajectory, then pull up and zoom out high to the sky.
@FSX404
@FSX404 2 года назад
That's a low yoyo and a low yoyo is easy to defend against, Talo would have done a high yoyo and we'd have been even. Point was to stay high and get the bombers not to fight the MiG. But, in this case the best way to fight the MiG is to drag him to 50k feet where 104 performs better.
@Only_God_Is_Allah_SWT
@Only_God_Is_Allah_SWT 2 года назад
@@FSX404 I agree. Also, such manoeuvre could possibly allow for quick kill then go after the bombers. It's more like mix of low and high yoyo. But what I used to do while I'm passing beneath him and he goes up, I just nose up prematurely, another 90° half barrel roll and adjust behind him from below at least in pure pursuit, closing in fast on him to get a possible kill in that short time window. What I've described worked in 99% of cases, maybe due to fact that I was going against the common folks. What I have noticed while bailing out of defensive turn fights is that, an enemy could defend only if they anticipate what I'm about to do as I would do these manoeuvres abruptly and high speed without them knowing what I'm planning. Usually, almost always, the manoeuvres from my original comment would take me into the lead pursuit over still in turning position enemy, closing in on him fast from above and gunning his jet down. What I've also used to do was, after take off, immediately go high altitude, which gave me lot more speed and allowed me to more easily anticipate and counter anything that was coming above the clouds. Take him out then return back to my original high altitude and do it again when engaging another enemy. The biggest problem for me was when an enemy is faster than me, usually it ended in a draw since I couldn't catch them. There are many other variations or situations of these manoeuvres at which defender can improvise.

@@FSX404 of course I was doing these fights in simulator (best that I've could afford at that time) so to be no confusion. Great video and thank You for feedback and for posting these videos Sir since I have keen interest in this matter. 👍
@Only_God_Is_Allah_SWT
@Only_God_Is_Allah_SWT 2 года назад
@@FSX404sorry Sir but appears to be that there was some misunderstanding. In this particular case, both You and Talo (Your opponent) were in turn fight. You were behind him as ATTACKER while he was in front as DEFENDER. If You, as ATTACKER do low yoyo while turning; he, as DEFENDER could counter it with high yoyo and then both could get even. I agree with that. What I was trying to say is: If Talo as DEFENDER, have tried to do low yoyo manoeuvre while turning, if he tried to dive down and pass below Your aircraft's belly, he would get behind You and if he finished it with high yoyo, he would be effectively intercepting You from above in lead pursuit. Even if You, as ATTACKER, try to counter it with high yoyo, Talo could still have higher AOA than Your F-104. Basically, he as DEFENDER while in turning could have prevented Your aircraft to reach 50k feet altitude and shine with its performance with that simple manoeuvre. You could dive with him, try to intercept him and go for the gun kill, BUT if You miss, You would be at clear disadvantage at that moment. Thank You for Your patience,
@FSX404
@FSX404 2 года назад
@@Only_God_Is_Allah_SWT not true at these speeds, any high AOA and loss of speed and I'd be gone. Talo is a real world fighterpilot and knew what he was doing, nothing would have worked unless one of us made a mistake.
