Former F-14A/B/D RIO, Mike "Scar" Vizcarra, shares some more stories from his time on the Tomcat and his Transition to the F/A-18F Super Hornet where he commanded VF-102 Diamondbacks!
Captain Vizcarra has accumulated over 3,600 flight hours, including 3,000 F-14 hours,
450 F/A-18F hours and 900 arrested carrier landings.
Watch part 1 here - www.aircrewinterview.tv/#/f14...
Side Note
We had a technical difficulty on my side (it did not show when recording) which seems to have made my audio 4/5 seconds ahead of my picture, but as I am not doing very much talking as I wanted Mike to get those great stories out, you shouldn't really be able to tell that much.

So...I was, "almost," a Naval Aviator back in the early eighties. Took the physical and was told I would fly. Second physical and they wanted me to drive a ship. I bailed. But was has always interested me was the fact that I had very good hand-eye coordination (quaterback on the football team, captain of the tennis team) but absolutely NO musical talent. When I was in Pensacola I noticed a fair amount of the candidates did. I race cars now, but wish I had the musical thing...like flying a fighter jet, what a joy.

Thank you so much for yet another great interview. I've always wondered about the reasons/logic behind the current mix of one two-seat sq and one single-seat sq. I've been trying to find out for some time watching your channel along with a bunch of other similar military aviation channels. For some reason (though I do have some theories of my own), traditionally VF (fighter) squadrons like his Diamondbacks and other famous ones, Jolly Rogers, Black Knights, Bounty Hunters, Black Aces, to name a few, all transitioned to the two-seat F model. A couple of exceptions I am aware of are Tophatters and Tom Catters. They switched to the single-seat E model.

Aircrew Interview, it would be nice when you post a "Part 2" to include a link to "Part 1" so we don't need to start searching for it...

Interesting take, although going from the Tomcat to Hornet is like going from a 69 hemi challenger to a modern day civic.

Mike Vizcarra just explained there better than anyone I've heard before why its way more interesting being a Mil flyer then a commercial one. Yeah, he also lifted the curtain on the double standards politicians impose when they get bitten by diversity. Should be a level playing field in every direction. But then, we should have honest politicans & honest 'top brass' .... But it ain't gonna happen.

If scar is anything like me I would be among 20 people with no interest in the conversation but ask me about my Military day and I will light up and be center of attention. I was on Midway with the last F4's and transitioned to the f18 legacy. "Not a Pilot" :(.... But got the opportunity to work with the f14's when I trans to Nimitz and fell in love like any aviation novus would. The whisling sound it made while landing, flight controls moving constantly unlike the f18. It had to be a Pilots fighter that you did controlled and not the computer. I could listen to him talk and never lose interest. Thank You

At the time of the F14, were there any cases of pilots who had contact with UFOs? Or ufos tic tacs??. Because, as we all already know, pilots have recently had contact with the Super Hornets. I have a brief impression that yes huh!!! Hugs from Brazil!!! There are many F14 Tomcat fans here.

@@get2dachoppa249 I was TAD to CAG ARS for most of my time in the squadron because I was only one of 2 AM's that ARS certified. I didn't interact with the squadron much, so I don't really remember who was all in charge.

"Quality" spread was in place well before 1986. ! was top in my class in 1975 at Meridian and had done best at boat for CQ, top and "best" by a miniscule number. Wanted attack orders. A-7's or A-6's, figured I'd get one of them. Orders day we were lined up in student control. alphabetically hearing our orders. I'm a T so was hearing many before me.....A-7's, A-6's, F-4's, a few new F-14's, first sets of those orders. Got to me, A-3's, then continued on....Whoa, whats an A-3? I found out after all were issued that it was a huge twin engined jet, the biggest, hardest to land on carriers. I wanted attack, I was "number one". All on deaf ears, orders are orders, you're top CQ guy, you get to fly the "Whale". Crap. Turned out OK as time went on, amazing experiences, transitioned to EA-6B's, the "Prowler", got Command, went through "Tailhook", survived and still going. Ah life!!

Never got the stick? dang...part of me feels like that might be better..
@michaelvizcarra
@michaelvizcarra 2 года назад
True! I got to fly the actual plane, i.e. "got the stick" several times in two seaters that had a stick and throttle in the other seat (A-4, F-18, S-3, F-15) but of course the Tomcat never had a stick in the backseat. I agree...the vast majority including myself would prefer to be the stick but because I could not pass the eye exam upon my initial Navy physical, I was not able to pursue being a pilot. I don't believe there are many Flight Officers who opted for NFO over Aviator, they typically were disqualed for vision like myself. This was before corrective surgery was OK'd for the U.S. Navy. I was actually part of that study when I had my eyes laser corrected while at Topgun. Cheers buddy!
