The Tomcat was my absolute favorite fighter of all time. As an USAF AWACS crew member, when we deployed and especially to OSW, I was excited to hear about which, carriers and aircraft packages we were flying with and if Tomcats were on the list.

I remember being a kid at NAS Willow Grove’s airshows and VF-101 brought the A+’s. If I recall it even said “F-14 A+” by the bureau number on the engine nacelles. Not far from that time I had the chance encounter with RIO Tom Twomey from VF-33 which was on the Constellation I believe. He gave my Dad and me a personal tour of his jet on the tarmac on a chilly cloudy day. He left me a squadron patch for the Starfighters. what a day it was. 🤘🏼

Great interview really. There's an article written by an E-3A AWACS operator from DS who said he heard chatter between F-14s and E-2Cs with an excited RIO wanting to fire up BVR TGTs. Hawkeye told him to stand bye. E-3A operator swept and interrogated the contact, came back A-6E friendly, right as the RIO called "Fox 1, Fox 1!!!" AWACS operator grabbed all the freqs and yelled for them to cease fire, they had an A-6 targeted.

Really enjoy this guy and this series. It'd be cool to get a couple of them together for a session or two... like war stories from the Tomcat Ready Room or something...

Holyshit. I was an AM2 with VFA-102 in Japan literally after they transitioned from the F-14 to the Super Hornet F model. I took a C-2 to meet them on the Kitty Hawk in the spring of 04'.

Consistent pattern of F-14 pilots being absolutely the most amazing. No nonsense and no BS. Just straight like it or leave it truth. I find his story fascinating at how F-14 Tomcats were scaring away the MIG-29s in the Gulf War, but as soon as Tomcats would leave the fighters they were protecting, the MIG-29s would return to attack them and F-15s would be vectored in rather than the F-14s that were much closer in distance to the planes they had been escorting.

It is because of the horrible experience iraqi pilots had in the war with iran. They also had the order to not engage with iranian F14s so that could be a reason.

From the interview, I don't believe your understanding is correct. The F-14s, with their long range radars, painted the MiG-29s from a long distance away and the MiG pilots could see that because the 29s would have been equipped with radar warning receivers (RWR). The MiGs turned around and waited until the US aircraft radars weren't looking at them any more and then tried for a shot in the back as the strike package was going home to the carrier. David Parsons says in the interview the F-14 crews decided not to turn around and go chasing the MiGs, but stayed with the A-6s. They knew the MiGs were there, probably from their own RWRs and they seemed to be planning to turn around as soon as the A-6s had reached a specific point, but F-15s were vectored to the MiGs by AWACS before that could happen. You can hear that as he says he had the radar all set to go after the MiGs, but he did not wind up getting the chance. This was not some strategy to keep the F-14s from engaging the MiGs.

Is it just a co-incidence that this guy takes photos from the back seat of an F-14, and looks like Goose?

You know I’m not sure he ever does actually mention how he got his call sign? He alludes to it but not sure it’s followed up with and I’m still curious!

@@Aircrewinterview It's probably already enabled, but you should check if quality of service (QoS) is enabled on your router. It really helps with preventing calls from lagging and breaking up.
