Thank you Nasty for these very very interesting first hand insights from the perspective of a real world fighter pilot with thousands of hours in the cockpits of F-14A/D and F-18s! Very honest and interesting as well as to-the-point summary of the capabilities of the F-14 [in the DACT exercises against thr F-15, F-16 and F-18]!! On the internet, there are a lot of these chairborne warriors. They know every thereotical facts and can re-post fact sheet knowledge as quick as light but they have no clue how things are working in real life. So its refreshing to hear from a master in the sky. Very much appreciated & thank you! Also many thanks for AI for organizing this great interview!

Someone has GOT to get Old Guard badasses like Nasty and Mooch together with DCS Ninjas like GS and either team up as wingmen or dogfight against each other. Those videos would be enthralling just from a knowledge transfer standpoint.
@dreaminknight
@dreaminknight 4 месяца назад
Mooch and some other former pilots indeed do fly in DCS. E.g. Max (an former F-16 & F-15E pilot) or Até (a former French Mirage and Rafale pilot). There was also a former F-18/F-16 pilot flying in DCS from time to time on youtube. When you see him flying in DCS and his reflexes during maneuvers "with a lot of Gs", you will understand that a (former) real life pilot may still focus on things, which are only relevant in real life. In DCS, they may therefore face a disadvantage against a pure "gamer". Further, the tactics in BVR are classified. Btw. GS flew against Até.

I echo all the other comments on Nasty's book. I picked it up after one of his previous interviews here. Not only were the lessons real and useful, but it was entertaining as heck. If you want a business / life leadership book.. it's that. If you just want to hear a bunch of great yarns, it's that. It could stand alone as either but here's the bonus: you get both! Throughout the book, and throughout these terrific interviews, he comes across as a true mentor. Excelling at what he does, focused on excellence, and wanting to share that with every and anyone who will listen so he can bring them along with him. These interviews are a case in point. Walking the walk. More personally, I try to be a little more 'Nasty' in my job with my team every day. Looking forward to picking up the new book and sharing with my team.

Ah yes, the Viper!!! Not mentioned here but also important were the F-16's small size (compared to F-14 or F-15 especially, but even against Hornets) which makes it easy to lose sight of (and lose sight, lose fight) and the fact that it had a 9G limiter, so you could go from 1 to 9Gs in 1.5 seconds without having to worry about an over-G, unlike other aircraft where the pilot has to be careful about over-Gs and so typically could not practically reach max allowed G (always had to leave some margin, at least in peacetime training). The F-15's aural Over-G Warning System does help in that respect. But yeah, that AOA limiter was not optimal, although it did keep you from going out of control.

Excellent insight into the world of a "Dog fighter", you guys always amaze me. I'd like to hear Mike talk about "The Strike Package", what elements make one up, what different types of aircraft are used for what role, what each element's role is, and how each role helps the package meet mission objectives. I finally got to see The Blue Angels fly their Super Hornets, I was in awe of the solo pilot when he brought his plane down to 40 knots ground speed, 100 feet off the lake, nose pointed almost straight up, wings almost completely unloaded and the bulk of the weight of the airframe supported by the engines, then he went full afterburner and just climbed out nearly straight up like a rocket. I had my field glasses on him and could clearly see the rudders and ailerons working back and forth keeping the airframe from stalling.

After college, i was trying to figure out what direction to go in my life. A naval aviator friend inspired me to pursue my interest in flying and I decided to enlist in the Air Force as a pilot candidate. The day I was scheduled for my physical was the day I was released from a 3 wk stay in a hospital after having my motorcycle knocked out from under me and I no longer had the physical abilities to handle all of the physical demands placed on a fighter pilot. Nevertheless, I take every opportunity to live vicariously thru the stories of those who actually lived them. I thoroughly enjoyed your testimony!
@2ZZGE100
@2ZZGE100 4 месяца назад
The TF-30 engines static (standing still), made as much thrust in full zone 2 afterburners as the GE-F110 engines made in full military power. Of course, if you pushed the TF-30 to max afterburner (zone 5) they made as much as the low afterburner thrust in the GE-F110 engines. Having said that, NAVAIR documents showed, the TF-30 engines were optimized for ram air effect. They were meant for more loiter time in low power settings and high thrust at higher speeds being originally bomber engines. That means, with the F-14 ramp system, thrust rose in the TF-30 a lot faster than the GE-F110 engines as the airspeed went up. At mach 0.8, the TF-30 thrust rose to 28,000 lbf as opposed to 30,200 lbf for the GE-F110 engines. Nasty is correct, since every fight devolves to a slow speed fight, the much lower thrust at slow speeds, gave the TF-30 engines a big disadvantage over the GE-F110 engines. The key to F-14A winning a fight, was to not let it get slow against an F-18. Shoot the Hornet quickly and with a lot of energy available at around 350 knots. That is of course, one was like Dale Snort Snodgrass who could make the Tomcat dance at very slow speeds and beat F-18 Hornets at very slow speeds because of how he could control the rudders and stick at slow speed. F-16 had the AoA limiter to ensure it could circle the sky without losing airspeed. High AoA costs energy and using the energy maneuverability, the AoA bleeds energy. Since F-16 was the only fighter that was designed around the two-circle flow dogfight and was all about sustaining energy while pulling max-G, the AoA limiter ensures the AoA does not start exceeding once it starts to bleed speed. AoA limiter will automatically dump the nose and make it re-gain energy quickly to ensure it can perform at the max rate (degree per second).
@audunskilbrei8279
@audunskilbrei8279 4 месяца назад
The F16 AOA limiter is not there to make it regain energy or keep it from bleeding energy. It was there to prevent loss of control. The F16 was prone to diverting at excessive AoA. Something about the single vertical tail getting obscured from the airflow at high AoA which caused reduced yaw stability(I heard it explained at some point. Didn't understand it completely so might not be totally accurate but I think the gist of it is correct). I believe the F18s outwards canted tails were like that in part to aid high AoA stability as a side note. The F16 won't prevent the pilot from bleeding energy except at high speeds where you hit the G-limiter before the AoA get's high enough counter the thrust. It would of course bleed more energy if the plane was allowed to pull higher AoA.
@2ZZGE100
@2ZZGE100 4 месяца назад
@@audunskilbrei8279 OK thanks. I read the 30 degree AoA limiter was to prevent it from bleeding all airspeed since it was designed around the two-circle fight to just keep circling until its opponent is no longer able to keep up. However, what you wrote makes sense as well since Viper was never designed for slow speed maneuverabiity and flying at slow speeds, but rather around the concept of energy maneuverability where you trade airspeed for nose position. Cheers!
@forzaelite1248
@forzaelite1248 4 месяца назад
@@audunskilbrei8279 It has to do with the optimization of the lifting body and wing airfoils, the powerful vortices generated by the leading edge extenions, the natural negative pitch stability, and what happens when the AoA gets too high. Essentially the entire airframe enters a "deep stall" where the airflow either becomes blocked by the body of the aircraft (rudder) or moves too far above the control surfaces to feed adequate air to generate pressure (wings, stabilons). Deep stalls are notoriously difficult/impossible to recover because the controls might not have enough airflow to push the nose where it needs to be or stay coordianated; the F16's natural tendency to pitch up is great mid-turn for reducing sustained turning drag, but once the plane goes over the limit that way it will aggravate the problem until it's sitting flat. You can also think of it like an F1 car: amazing turn performance as long as you have grip, but if you turn it too hard it oversteers into a wall. As you said, having twin tails gives you better high AoA control; the rudders sit in line with the vortices and get fed air rather than being potentially blocked by the body (in the legacy Hornet's case, it was actually so much that they began to wear abnormally!) and they both contribute to control in all 3 axes. As I'm aware this was somewhat just a side effect of the kind of optimizations they were looking for in the jet (9G, 2 circle, high energy-maneuverability, etc.) and basically a liberty that was enabled by fly-by-wire.

Kinda sorta right. Having fought in the Super Hornet, you want to lead with rudder and follow with lateral stick. You CAN use lateral stick only, the jet won’t depart, but you won’t be max performing the jet-turn performance will not be as good. There will be noticeable lag. Still gotta use the rudder if you want to get the most out of her at high alpha.

I'll suggest Jungle as a great -14D pilot you might want to interview. His T-45 vs F-14 stories are epic. Just like Nasty bringing up the Red Baron, they go to show that a lot of the basic truths about dogfighting haven't really changed wince WW1.

Yeah there was a great interview/discussion of Jungle with other F-14 pilots and RIOs. IIt was a bit more than 60mins. I remember him telling not so nice things about the F-18 as a fighter. Unfortunately, I can't find this vid anymore on RU-vid Can anyone post the link? Many thanks in advance!

Everyone of these aircraft are absolute beasts. The F-16 is an incredibly nimble dogfighting weapon, as is the F-18 which is also an incredibly versatile plane, the F-15 is a flexible, capable BVR machine, and the F-14 is just crazy awesome. One of the most powerful radars ever put in a fighter, one of the most powerful Fox-3 missiles ever put on an aircraft (AIM-54C), and surprisingly fantastic low speed maneuverability and ability to pull AOA. I love them all. If in some alternate world where I was a fighter pilot with a choice.... it'd be tough to choose between a Viper and a Tomcat.

22:13 as I understand it from interviews with Viper pilots, the F-16 likes to keep the fight fast because due to it's design that's where it's able to utilize its 9g capability best. Something about the way the wings and tail and fuselage is shaped means that it just doesn't handle very well in high AOA. I remember one pilot putting it this way: "The computer tells you 'look, I know you're asking for 40°, but I gonna keep you at 28° because otherwise we're gonna bleed too much energy and end up slow.' And that's where you don't wanna end up because the Viper likes to be fast so you can really use those full 9g's."

F-16 optimum corner speed is like 400 knots. It is near unbeatable in a two circle rate fight

@@Shadowboost exactly, many other 4th gen fighters' optimum corner speed is around 100-150 knots slower.

I'm not here to be a detractor, I love this stuff. That "every fight devolves into a slow fight" is not true. Totally not true. A competent fighter pilot can deliberately keep his speed up and turn a one circle fight into a two circle, at which point the guy who tried to sucker that pilot into fighting slow is screwed.

Hello, good interview, I have a question, you were talking about 320 knots pulling 6.5 Gs sustained, at 320 knots you can pull all stick aft and get more Gs than 6.5? or you are in the limits of the AoA pulling 6.5 Gs at 320 knots, in the edge of the accelerates stall?

As expensive as it would have been to maintain (total cost), marrying a modern FBW system (like from F15EX or FA18E/F) with the F14D, I quite suspect that the result would have been a really fun and surprisingly maneuverable fighter even as big as those things were. With any of the more modern 2 seat aircraft (F14D or newer), upgrade them with F35 sensors and such and the result would be a reasonably good fighter but a really dangerous quarterback for a strike force. I've always enjoyed watching the Tomcat demos at airshows... As to the F15EX, I saw an interview recently where the pilot being interviewed basically stated that the aircraft basically didn't have an alpha limit... all thanks to the FBW software. In an environment where the F22's stealth isn't needed, the F15EX doing just the A-A role is likely going to give someone some nightmares. Still, I miss the Tomcats.

Well, we're still here and it's not likely there would still be F-14s operating if they had extended their life--so it looks like the decision worked out.

First time ever I've heard any pilot call the Hornet a rate fighter?! My Hornet buddies always said it was a pure angles fighter, preferred a one circle over a two. Matter of fact, just text my former Rhino buddy, he said it was not a rate fighter.

He did say he didn't have much experience in the Hornet. Also I believe the Super Hornet is slightly more optimized for rate fighting than the Legacy Hornet; then again I might be talking out my ass as my source on that one didn't have the best track record.
