The F-4J Phantom II recently got a BIG upgrade in that it now has helmet mounted sights. On top of that, its BR has stayed the same while the overall BR ceiling has increased, making this a much more playable vehicle - not that it wasn't already.

The reason the PD radar stops working is that it relies on enemy movement relative to the ground. If they are moving perpendicular to your approach the radar thinks aren't moving relative to the ground and they disappear due to the ground filter, this is what people mean by notching the radar. If an enemy is notching you, switch to TWS or regular scan and they should appear again as long as the ground clutter is minimal but then your radar can be tricked by chaff. PD radar is immune to chaff and ground clutter which is why it is so nice.

But even if the radar is tricked by chaff in regular scam the cw seeker head of the aim7f will still go for the plane instead of the chaff, since It can the the doppler effect even when not in pulse doppler mode, atleast that's how it works on the f4e phantom.

@@yeetmaster3360 That is correct, the AIM7 should have a doppler filter to ignore chaff. Although that only works if the launching plane maintains their lock and doesn't try switching targets while the missile is still en route.

13:07 Its the same garbage with the head-ons when you completely annihilate the enemy, he crashes into you and he gets the kill on you but it says he suicided.

Head on? You’re basically begging for a collision. It blows my mind at how many people I see going for head ons like they don’t have a brain. That’s a dumb tactic. I can determine low iq players just by watching them approach and the head on guys are by far the lowest iqs.

Love your videos Tank. I watched your F-5C review the other day and decided to buy it. Best decision I’ve made in this game so far. I grinded to the F-105D and down to the F-104 and the Sabres but it took to long. The F5 has made it EXPONENTIALLY faster. Especially since I wanna unlock every single plane in every tree starting with USA. Thank you for the great videos man, keep it up.

Of all the premium US planes I bought, the F5c is really my favorite. It may not be the best at anything, but it's great at a lot of things. I would love to see Gaijin add drop tanks to it though!

@@tonyovermyer5368 same here with the drop tanks. I love using it mostly cause people see F-5Cs as free kills. Most of the time they are and so am I😅but I’m not completely crap. Grinded to jets before getting it. I really hope they add more modern F-5s.

Good luck, the grind will slow down for rank 8 planes with the f-5c. I did the grind without it, takes ages. Ngl tho, taking a dump on f-5c’s with my A-5c is the most fun I’ve had in war thunder

Good to see you're also correct in saying HMS and not HMD. So far we ONLY have HMS (helmet mounted sight), no HMD's (helmet mounted display). The difference is simply the display version, well, displays information such as airspeed, selected weapon, shoot queue, G-pull, and so on, the HMS is simply a sight and nothing more.

Been loving the changes to the F-4J and feel she sits fine at 11.3. Don't remember a game where I haven't climbed in it. The BVR capability is really strong. Generally like to go to about 6000m to maximize the Aim-7F's and the PD radar. Even in the event of encountering F-14's, F-16's, or Mig-29's as my opponent. If I see I'm unable to kill them before they would me, I can just notch and trash any missile they throw at me. Bonus tactic if I turn in just enough to bait another radar missile from them that could have gone to a friendly.

Ah, I remember this flavour of brick. I remember the pain of flying this thing during the reign of the tomcats. It then took a turn for the worse when my grind extended to the time F-16s and Mig-29s showed up. Though they were rare, the Downtiers this Phantom got were absolute steam rolls. An F-4E flight model with the second best radar an F-4 variant could have combined with devastating sparrows and room still for enough ordinance to take two bases.

You can slave 9G's and better IR seekers to radar. I've gotten multiple double aces using this feature and hardly any videos on it. Edit: this was covered at 9:43.

yes i have shot down a missile in flight and i have missiled other missiles. my gun kill against the missile was in something like an a 10 or maybe the su 25 i dont remember which but i had gun pods and everything attached and just got lucky. I actually sometimes can semi-reliably spoof enemy missiles by shooting them down with mine in vehicles that lack flare.

I aways arm IR missiles in a headon. Even the humble 9B can countermissile, and you lose nothing unless you lock and fire

Why no use of the radar ACQ mode with HMD? I realize it's kinda tricky to use in that you have to press the ACQ/BVR key twice to get into the HMD mode but still that's quite useful in my experience.

“I have never seen that before” that’s just the F4J experience ever since they added the F16 the F4J has felt really weird for some reason like the PD radar will all the sudden lose lock in a head on and the aim7fs are not flying true towards the enemy and are acting like they are bugged for some reason could just be me but whenever I fly this play really weird things begin to happen

Hi Tankenstien, could you make a video about your WT keybindings layout? I find it difficult when I am assigning new keys. It's so hard to find some empty or at least non-colliding key.

I would, but I will tell you this - my keybindings are absolutely terrible. They make no sense and would likely not only make other people worse, but they would also get me laughed out of the War Thunder community, haha. I have so many buttons that have like 3-4 other uses that it's ridiculous

I just use default keybinds and bind certain things to somewhere closer to my left or right hand. I.e. My missile lock is 1, fire is 2, pitch up and down is the two buttons on the side of my mouse, and F raises flaps and G lowers them for those rare cases I need takeoff or even landing flaps in a fight. Just gotta do what makes you most comfortable.

My controls are best imo 1,2,3,4,5 for radar controls X for lock Space to drop bombs / fire missile R to change missile Top side mouse button for flares Bottom side mouse button for radar lock G gear Brackets for different flaps levels Backspace for wing sweep activate and INS and DEL for sweep WASD for control SHIFT and CTRL for throttle

You can do the same with missiles too, but you have to fly in a straight line or the other will maneuver causing yours to miss

I think the f16 has a hit box the size of a sewing needle eye. Its like the tracers go through with not "hits" or "critical hits".

@Tankenstein Responding to the part where you destroyed the missile with your gun. I think 2 patches back my friend and I were flying/ working together I had someone on my tail that launched a missile and just as i saw that Red star fresh off his rails, my team mate destroyed the enemy with a missile, and the Red Star was gone. Think of top gun maverick when Rooster and Maverick were saved by hangman... Yeah, that was that moment. I still have the clip of it too.

I made this thing millions of times and do it again and again. Funny to shot down their missiles and see them boom by their missiles cuz of explosion, so kill count is mine hehehe. Also on arcade it’s funny to destroy their missiles on props hehehe

F-14 didn’t have a helmet mounted sight outside a few prototype versions so they don’t get it. USA doesn’t get HMS again until JHMCS comes along in the 90’s. That said JHMS is amazing and far better than anything the Russian have even today

By default U activates ordinance tracking. Bombs,rockets,missiles, torpedoes etc can be followed with cam till they die

It makes me incredibly sad that the F-5C, which is a pay to win jet, doesn't have better missiles than the AIM-9E's. They don't pull well (only 10 g's) and they're easily flared away, even with afterburner on. You only really get people who aren't paying attention with those. Some AIM-9L'S would be appreciated. It only gets 2 of them anyway, so it'd be nice if they were better, since jets of a similar BR have them.

Nah the F5C is busted. Good flight model and performance. The poor F4C doesn’t have its countermeasures, nor the historical Aim-7Es. So you can get a buff on your F5C when the Phantom is modeled correctly

With other types of missiles, like R-60s and, eventually, R-73s, it's awesome. With the AIM-9Gs on the F-4J, it helps, but typically isn't incredible.
