_"There's only one thing missing tonight for me.... And that's to have Tom Hulce standing by my side."_ Man, I felt that. Back, when the Oscars was something.
I think this is why they split up the best actor award into leading actor and supporting actor. Had they had those categories, I'm pretty sure Murray and Tom would have won that night.
I am glad they didn’t frauded one of them as supporting. It would terrible. Haing S Ngor was frauded as supporting. His performance could rival Murray’s in the best actor category.
@@cazia9 Or when Cathrine Zeta Jones won her Oscar and her co-star Queen Latifah, who was nominated alongside her, screamed “YES!” And was so happy for her
The trouble is EVERYONE in that movie played their best performance, it was an incredible film, it should be possible for two people to win this category
Choosing between F. Murray Abraham and Tom Hulce must have been a very difficult decision I'm sure. The margin of victory could not have been that big.
That should've been the case for many actors. If Nicholson and Pacino both won in 1974, we wouldn't have many best actor problems nowadays. 1974 was very hard, and the terrible decision hurt other actors for decades. Makeup best actor award after makeup best actor award
I love how Murray and Tom Hulce's relationship with each other is the polar opposite of the envy that Murray's character embodied in this masterpiece of a movie. Tom's childlike explosion of excitement to Murray winning and Murray's words of only thing missing is Tom Hulce by his side receiving the award.. Just wow.
*The best movie of all time Honestly, it's perfect on every level and I've watched it at least 20 times. Such a timeless brilliant movie. It's still confusing to me how someone could make a film like this one. Most deserved best picture oscar ever
Not only was it a classy speech but the lady that gave him the reward gave him a kiss but it wasn't sexual or trying to seduce him it was pure and genuine kiss.......YOU DON'T SEE THAT ANYMORE THESE DAYS .........😲🙊 I thought that was a beautiful moment. Now days everything gets turned around and manipulated. So I thought this moment in time was Pure genuine and out of love and sincerity....it's RARE to see that these days.
The film has stood the test of time. The performances were transcendent and of course the music was inspirational. For a period piece, it has no peer. For a motion picture, it leaves you in awe.
It truly has a claim to being the best movie ever made. It’s certainly my #1. 40 years after its release it could be released today and would still be received the same way.
Tom's performance of Mozart was great, but F. Murray Abraham absolutely deserved this win. If it were possible, they should be up there together, indeed. They brought out the best in each other's performances.
FMA's performance was deep and emotional. He lived, ate and breathed Salieri. He felt his thoughts and his loathings. He felt his absolute envy of Mozart's abilities while at the same admiring this man who clearly had God given talent in the work he produced. All of that, all those emotions, all mixed together and projected without whispering a single word. That is one of the most difficult performances to pull off authentically.
I saw Amadeus when it was released and a fair number of times since then. For about thirty years I thought Hulce should have won the best actor award over FMA. But in the last five years I have grown to appreciate FMA's performance more. kxmode has it exactly right in their post above.
I tear up in every scene where Salieri is reading Mozart's music off a sheet. The portrayal of Salieri's emotions is so vivid and beautifully acted by Mr. Abraham - I get chills every single time. Thank you Mr. Abraham for the gift you gave us.
Amadeus was going to premiere on cable ca. 1985 and my dad wanted to watch it. I was in my early teens, metalhead, all that. I think it was a Friday night when we sat down in front of the television. Within 30 minutes my dad was asleep as always, whether at home or in the theater. I was glued to the television. That movie changed the whole trajectory of my life.
I was lucky enough to have an acting master class with Mr. Abraham in the late 90's. He was super tough, but kind at the same time. He had great stories, too. Truly a modern master.
Honestly, this should've been the rare case where both Abraham and Hulce both share the win. Both outstanding, both incredible, both absolutely fantastic.
Hulce should have been in the best supporting actor category. As good as he was too in the film there was no way anybody could beat FMA. His performance was beyond magnificent. It's one of the finest acting achievements in the history of cinema.
+Shane Anthony Nah. I just watched the movie and Hulce is pretty much a co-lead. There are chunks where he's the center of the narrative. It's nice that in the 80's actors didn't play category fraud as much as they do now (cough cough Alicia Vikander)
Because Mozart really is a main character in Amadeus. He has almost as much screen time. Hell, his name is the title of the film :) But seriously, as a supporting actor role it just wouldn't be right, even though Tom Hulce would have been more likely to win. IMO it was an impossible decision because I and many people think his performance was as extraordinary and affecting as Abraham's. (I understand why one would think Abraham was unbeatable though.)
Undoubtedly one of the finest performances in any film, and he is right to note Hulce's performance also. The one makes the other. It is a beautiful duet of acting.
I saw Amadeus for the first time a year ago. I was blown away. Such a beautiful stellar movie.. I had no idea the movie was as old as it is. This movie has great memories attached to it and a special place in my heart.
Not only a brilliant performance in all the scenes when Mozart was alive, Abraham was also totally believable as an old man recalling it more than 30 years later.
Out of all the movies I have watched, AMADEUS is the only Movie that should have 2 actors winning the best Actor Award. Yes, it is a tie...and rightfully so. Both of them were amazing in their roles.
I agree. The dialogue between Salieri and the priest is awsome, very emotional. Like when the priest start to sing along and say. - Yes i know that! Thats charmning! I'm sorry i didnt know you wrote that! - ...I didn't. I also like when Salieri try to describe Mozarts music - On the page it looked nothing. The beginning simple, almost comic. Just a pulse - bassoons and basset horns - like a rusty squeezebox. Then suddenly - high above it - an oboe, a single note, hanging there unwavering, till a clarinet took over and sweetened it into a phrase of such delight! This was no composition by a performing monkey! This was a music I'd never heard. Filled with such longing, such unfulfillable longing, it had me trembling. It seemed to me that I was hearing a voice of God.
Just saw this movie and was absolutely blown away by his performance. Tom Hulce was equally powerful and wished he had won an Oscar also. So glad he acknowledged him in his speech. Films of this caliber is rare today, I think.
Films of this caliber are UNHEARD OF, nowadays! You have to go back to 2014 and "The Grand Budapest Hotel", starring Ralph Fiennes, in which FMA had a small role: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kAocG575LCI.html
Why? Just another version (with great music) of Hollywood casting the Italian as the villain, insulting Jesus Christ and mocking His church. Same shit, different movie.
WalterLiddy He seems like the sweetest man, as well. Makes his performance even more amazing, knowing that his role in the film was so believable you actually think he may be like that in real life. :) Love him.
I feel like the Oscars needs a category for like, ‘best enemies’ or ‘best comedic duo’….you know to get two actors up on stage together winning based on the strength of both of their performances. You know, like ‘Lethal Weapon’. Comedic cop duo.
I love F.Murray Abraham, but I feel Hulce's performance is the most memorable one, to this day. He gave Mozart a soul, a face, and a voice that, like his music, transcended time. And that deranged laugh alone deserved an award for best sound editing.
Hulce was so damned good in Amadeus. Apples and oranges between him and Abraham. It would've been magnificent if they could've given it to both of them.
This really puts a spin on the movie "Amadeus." Salieri is not only chosen over Mozart, but when Salieri gets the award, he says nice things about Mozart.
The way in which F. Murray and Tom Hulce fed and played off each other in this incredible film causes me to feel a double Best Actor Oscar was due here. What amazing performances!
Just watched Amadeus for the first time last night. So so deserving. And so so true that Tom should be standing with him. Their performances were fantastic
A very gracious, if short, acceptance speech. F. Murray Abraham certainly deserved his Oscar, but I agree with him that a double win with Tom Hulce would have been most satisfying. They both brought historical characters to life, and I cried for both of them in the end of the movie!
Mozart was a less complex character (in the movie) and had the real Mozart's music buoying him up. BTW, the movie led to a revival of interest in Salieri, who IRL was friends with both Mozart and Beethoven, I think Beethoven's teacher at one point, and a pallbearer at his funeral. They were all part of the elite of their time and respected each other. Salieri was conservative, and his music went out of fashion as the new generation of romantics arrived.
The raw energy of the audience response when Abraham's name was first read says all you need to know. And they played Salieri's welcome march for Mozart as Abraham walked to the stage. How brilliant!
I remember this. Abraham's name was announced (Hulce's reaction made me smile!), and I just knew that he was going to get onstage and say, "So Mozart didn't get the last laugh after all... Grazie, Signore!" And then... No. He was all class, gave Hulce his moment as well, and I was so impressed. Not too shabby for the Patron Saint of Mediocrity!
I had only seen F. Murray in Scarface before seeing Amadeus a few years later and when I realized it was the same actor from Scarface, I knew then, even at the age of 14 that this man was special. His scenes in Amadeus have got to be some of the best in the history of movie making. Definitely Blessed with great talent.
"there's only one thing that's missing for me tonight, and that's to have tom hulce standing by my side". ❤❤ oh my darling Hulce.. You deserve more than the Oscar ❤
What a class act. Well done Mr. Abraham! To his credit, Hulce was clearly very happy for Abraham. It was really great of Abraham to acknowledge Hulce, as well. They both knew the strength of their performances depended on the other.
Corey Pack Sorry I thought you were serious. The terminator was not a movie for oscar of course but it was the movie who made schwarzenegger a huge star.
One of my favorite actors of all time. Everything he does is memorable, and he's always a class act. Quite a handsome man he was, too. I love this guy.
Tom is really sweet person,I know person who worked with him,she said,he is that kind of person ,who knows listen to you, very likeable ,,you feel comfortable in his presence ,and you just want hug him,he has that quality of him
Abraham as Salieri was absolutely FANTASTIC!!! but Tom Hulce did such an amazing job too they complimented each other so well in Amadeus it's such a shame that he couldn't stand up there with him.
Exactly! Not only more humility but the Oscars back then were all about talent. I don't think they had the disgusting political propaganda and catwalk with the dresses or the bad jokes that even the actors who are present in the ceremony can't even laugh with!
That movie made me literally falling in love with Mozart's music and his personality... After that movie I started listening and understanding classical music!!!! Wonderful and intence...
F Murray Abraham's such a great, classily humble, admirable, handsome actor and man. He truly deserved winning this oscar for his fabulous performance as Salieri in the movie "Amadeus".
Just the way he so elegantly pranced up the steps, to the measured pause when he met Shirley, respectfully greeting her and accepting the award….and then the way his hand so smoothly slides under the the bottom of the statue. Captivating.
This is wonderful. I've never been more touched by a film than Amadeus and Abraham's performance is truly a once in a century performance. Milos Forman is a brilliant director who picked a perfect cast to make the perfect film.
Because the directors cut is clear and above the best dramatic movie of all time, while the theatrical release was disjointed enough to make it seem subpar. If you've seen the directors cut you'd know just how unmatched this performance was.
This is the only movie I've ever seen in which absolutely no one moved after the credits finished rolling and the lights came up. And it was largely because of Mr. Abraham's performance.
I'm 19 and I'm studying acting. The synergy between these two actors and the level of commitment to their characters created an immortal film. In passing, I commented that neither of them used a fashionable technique at the time called "the method" that involves putting mental health at stake. They prove that classic acting techniques give great results.
No actor ever deserved it more. It was perhaps the best performance I've ever seen, and I've seen some great performances. Actors are, at times, insecure, prickly and vain. I suppose they suffer from the same ills that afflict us all. But, they also possess this wonderful ability to hold us in their magic spell.
