Nice comparison, thank you. All of those clamps are more than adequate for woodworking glue ups. However, the case for the medium duty over the light duty would be when one needs to clamp something to a bench, etc. Good to have some of each.

Again , extremely practical advice. One thing going for HF clamps is that sometimes, you need quantity just to hold stuff down. So they're good for that.

This is the video I needed when I started out. I started with HF, but the fit and finish varied widely and none clamped consistently like each other. But I figured for the price and warranty you couldn't beat them. The final straw was when I broke a 6" one clamping a stop block to my miter saw station (bent back easily and snapped, was rusted inside). I took them all back and invested in the Bessey and Jorgensen 4 packs to find which one I liked. My preference is the Jorgensen clamps because of the rubber handle and finish on the clamp body. I'll be buying them going forward.

As all the past comp videos you provide this is a winner and I thank you once again for real world comp of tools. Personally hands down in that sized clamp-6 in-the Jorgensens ARE BY FAR SUPERIOR. THE HANDLE ALONE - fit feel and function- far surpasses all the others.

Thanks for taking the time to do this comparison study. I’ve been buying the TayTools clamps (because I’m already there ordering x or y tool, so I just add a set of clamps when I can) and I’ve been happy with them. Like you said, get a tool, tool does it’s job and we keep going. That’s all I ask of a clamp. If I’m at Lowe’s or HD and the clamps are on sale, I’ll pick some up. I find I end up putting some grip (hockey) tape on the Bessey’s though. No big deal to me. Anyway, appreciate the video. Thanks!!

Same experience on reattaching the pads. Only turner's tape will hold. Tried: CA, wood glue, rubber cement, hide glue and silicon caulk.

The length of the lead screw on Jorgensen isn't an issue when using them the regular way ( as you state ). I don't screw it all the way in, I gust slide it up the bar and tighten the screw.

I got 2 4 packs of Jorgensen's Black Friday 2019 and paid just under $20 each. I am in love! I had the same issue with the pads, I just put a drop of I think CA glue on the ones I could find and the problem was resolved! Looked for a deal on them this Black Friday and they were never in stock to order but the same price!

On the wood handles wait 15 or 20 years and the smaller diameter and hard surface will make a huge difference to you. Also electrical heat shrink tubing is the simplest smoothest way to both increase the diameter and provide some cushioning!

I really like Bessey clamps, I have several of the 4 packs, and the 3/4" pipe clamps. I also still own 4 of the 48" aluminum bar clamps and about a dozen or so f style clamps from HF. I did take the time to test each clamp in the store, for fit and function, and yes there are notable differences. Taylor tools are on my list to try. Good information on the various clamps!!

I've been very happy with the deeper reach f clamps I got at menards. If you don't live in the Midwest you can get them from the website. Nice heavy duty clamps, and very reasonably priced. They are clutchless, like the medium duty Bessel clamps.

Amazing comparison Jody! Thank you for this one. And thank for the link to the grip tape. I have some of the very small bessey (4") that have the wooden handles and could use some extra grip at times. About the comparison, I've used many of those clamps myself and settled on bessey as my go-to brand when I want clamps that work great out of the box, and continue to reliably work year after year. If you don't mind a more detailed response, my experiences with the others: Jorgensen - Decent, but the bars had more flex than I like. Expensive. Not woth the extra cost IMHO. Harbor freight - I have the older blue and gray ones. They do the job, but the handles have a tendency to come off when cranking them down. 5 minute epoxy is an easy fix, but like you said, I don't want to have to fix my new tools. Bessey - Again, my favorites. I'm not a huge fan of the wooden handles, so I always try to opt for the 2K composite handles. Thanks again!

Very nice& thorough review, appreciate your attention to detail, and I thought it was clear what you meant about extending clamp to for attaching to a drill press or table saw top. I have older Jorgensen clamps and I notice the protection pads will leave an 'oily' looking spot on the wood. While it doesn't seem to affect the final finish, it always concerns me. Do you notice with the other clamps?

I’m still starting out in woodworking and the price of clamps shocked me more than anything. I needed some squeeze clamps and couldn’t believe how cheap they were at HF, so I bought some. So far they’ve been fine, but I’m still new at this. Down the road I might get some fancier ones

Haven’t seen the full video yet, but! I prefer the red wood handle bessey clamps over the harbor freight. My main clamps are all the bessey. That said if I need to do a ton of glue ups or lamination I pick up more harbor clamps. They are a great value for the money but compared to bessey they start to flex and lose strength way before the bessey. I haven’t tried any of the heavy duty plasticy rubber handle bessey but I would like to try some eventually!

I have those exact Jorgensen clamps in 3 different sizes. You can get them cheap at Lowe's. I also have some Bessey F-style but they are much larger and much more expensive. 8" throat depth and weigh a ton. They have both served me well.

Really enjoy your informative videos. Question...do you know of a clamp that has a larger jaw (space between the pads and the clutch bar) there are certain projects I do where the added reach to the center of a piece would be really beneficial. My personal preference is the Jorgenson clamps and I will definitely be using the double-sided tape hack to secure the pads.

First I want to thank you for doing another great video. I have a good bit of H.F. f-style clamps. I would check them in the store to see if they function correctly like all clamps I'm about to buy. I also take the pads off of the top to see if the metal is flat or angled. I've found angled metal top pads on H.F. of course as well as the Jorgensen's in that 4 pack when Lowe's had them on sale. I want to check the TayTools version out. Thanks again for the comparisons

I’ve had great luck with Bessey and Jorgensen clamps over the years. I usually buy them at auctions now, I don’t see much harbor freight stuff out there used, and I think I know why. Now in my 50’s I don’t seem to get as good grip on those smooth wood handles, usually when I need to loosen actually, so I think I’ll check out the grip tape. Thanks for all the information!

I can see one advantage to the HF clamp taking forever to open and close. If you were clamping something fragile, you will increase the pressure much more gently than with a quick closing clamp. And, just with any gearing, you may actually be able to apply more total pressure because it's basically a lever.

Totally agree on TayTools!!! My introduction was for blem squares. One was good, one not so good. They nearly refused to allow me to pay for a branded replacement for the bad one. Since, I've bought Narex Richter chisels (incredible!), more blem and branded squares and other things. They are quick to answer questions on phone or email and have PROVEN they want customers to be delighted, not just satisfied!

Thanks for the comparison. The number of turns for the final clamping after advancing the jaw should be minimal and so a larger number of turns for the full length of the lead screw would only be a concern to me if I needed to clamp in a recess or around other features often. However, the tactile feedback you noted with the Harbor Freight clamp is a point against that one for me.

Great video. I’m getting ready to add some more clamps to my new shop. Have a couple of HF clamps. I like Bessey on other style clamps. I like Taytools as a company and get all my CMT stuff from them, along with other stuff. I think I’ll try their clamps.

I like the Bessey clamps. I have both F-style amd K-body clamps. All have wooden handles. Many of them are 10+ years old and still work great. I also have some pipe clamps for extra large clamping jobs. The F-style clamps are the most often used clamps in my shop.

I have had an issue with the new HF clamps not releasingto slide the lower jaw into or out of the work area. Takes both ands to operate. I have gone to the pistol style F clamps for positioning. Then when ai need more I add the screw style F-clamp.

i would never call you names. love your vids, very informative. one idea on the bessey clamp handles being slippery, i use a channel ox, and put indents on the wooden handles, solves the slippery problem! keep up the good work buddy.

I have a bunch of OLD (like 20 years) HB 12” clamps, and they work great. Bought a couple new one 6 months ago - serious disappointment. Returned, bought Bessie set and am very happy. I’d like to see this same thing with quick clamps. Are the premium brands really that much better?

I started out buying 8 each Bessey 4", 6", 12" & 24" clamps. Hated them because the handles were too small and too slick for my meaty hands. Gave them all away and bought 8 each of 6", 12" and 24" Harbor freight clamps. There were ok, some of them were finicky, and yes, the pads came off all the time. But the main reason I gave up on them was that the 12" & 24" clamps tended to flex under moderate pressure. I finally got rid of those (keeping the 6" sizes because they didn't flex much) and now have 8 ea of 12" and 24" Rockler Sure-Foot F-clamps. They are much larger, heavier, and more expensive than all the clamps you discussed but I just love them.

I bought 4 pack Bessey from HD last year. After a few uses, one of them started skipping. I contacted Bessey, they said there was a batch with this problem, and they are going to send me a new one of the same size. Before it arrived, another one from the 4 pack started skipping. I contacted again, and Bessey sent 2 of 4 packs in case another one goes bad. Not long after that, it went on sale at HD for $14.97/4pk, and I bought 2 sets. So far, only 2 had skipping problem. It is worth buying a few sets when it is under $15. For heavy duty, or deeper reach situations, I have some old Jorgensen 45series clamps with clutch, wood handle, 5in reach and much thicker bars.

This is a fantastic video! I'd be curious to hear your take on TayTools medium duty clamps compared to Bessey. I have a few light duty (2" throat) from TayTools that i did not like at all. Tried a few medium duty (3" throat) and the quality was much better and i really like them

Great video, very thorough! I have a bunch of the Bessy's, some older Jorgensen's and some Irwin's (?) As Lowes has jettisoned their Irwin stock, I may look at the newer Jorgensen's but I have to say I like the Bessy price point better.

Very informative video (as usual)! One thing you didn't really go into detail on (and it might not be terribly relevant here to be honest) is the bars on the clamps themselves. My favorite F-style clamp is the Bessy TGJ2.506+2k (medium duty 600 lbs) version, as the bar has serrated notches not only along the top but on the beveled sides as well (surely, this has to amount to the adjustable part having more to hang onto). But I know the clamps with serrated notches on the top of the bar only works as well. As a side note question, what it the best way to remove dried glue from those clamp bars (my notches are getting plugged up a bit)?

I agree with you about the Bessy bars. I've really liked the ones I've had and the bar is really nice. Not a fan of the wood handle, but I don't let it ruin my day too bad. :P For the glue have you tried just a wire brush? If that doesn't work using some acetone should help or a combination of the two. Good luck!

Agree with the wire brush. I actually hit mine with the wire wheel and the glue came off in a flash but it actually stained the metal. Nothing other than cosmetic but I thought it was odd that glue stained the metal. Probably because it’s got some plating on it if some sort. (I’m speaking of the bessey in my experience)

I tend to stick with the Bessey clamps myself. Just reliable. I have only the 6” harbor freight clamps, as the longer ones not worth the hassle IMO. Good tip on the double sided tape, I’m gonna have to try that! You Should do a video comparing bar clamps and pipe clamps. Your videos are great to gleam any insight on what potential issues to avoid. Keep them coming!

Thanks for the breakdown. I have considered grabbing some Jorgensen clamps but it seems I will stick with the Bessey. I have the newer HF version of the 6" clamp. I don't mind them but have constant issues with the pad on the fixed jaw falling off. CA glue worked for a while but has pooped out, I will now try the double sided tape fix. A few were non functional, jaw mechanism wouldn't lock on the very first use. I double checked functionality when exchanging them. The HF clamps work well but to me they don't feel like they lock in as well as I would like. I also have the Bessey 6" clamp. I was able to get the 4 pack as you described for $19.95 at Home Depot in TX, after moving I found them at the Home Depot for $24.95. I like the feel and function of the Bessey better than the HF. I don't have issues with the pads falling off either. I have 18, 24 and 30" HF F-style clamps as well. I find the steel they use flexes a great deal when clamping. I have 24" Bessey F-styles as well and they flex when clamping but not to he extent the HF versions do. Just my experience and opinion.

Thanks for the great comment. I have had flexing issues as well on the longer bars but I have a few in the junk pile that are 6" and have bent bars as well. Could be user error on my part though.

Because I only use these for light duty projects, the harbor freights are fine. I also have Jorgenson. When it counts, I will use parallel clamps. I mostly use these for holding things, versus glue ups.

I've only used two brands of camps. Joregensen and Bessy both are top notch. Some of my Jorgensen's I've had over 25 years. The oldest Bessy F's are 10yrs old. The older Joregensen's you had to buy the rubber caps as extras.

Love your reviews - you hit on a lot of commonsense categories others don't seem to. I've never used the HF clamps but wouldn't bother based on the performance of other HF stuff I regretted handing over money for. I have the Bessey clamps and would cover an entire wall with them if I could afford it. I like the wood handles - good grip, and if they break, I can make a new one. Related to your F-clamp video: I've noticed that the Jorgenson brand seems to be going downhill. I bought some pipe clamps (1/2" and 3/4", Amazon bundle 'deal') and had/have issues with the pins not being seated and springs not aligning the release plates. Wonder if you'd heard or observed this as well.

Kinda off topic from the f style clamps, but I have some quick clamps from harbor freight and the rubber pads leave behind an imprint of the pad on wood if left on there. :/

I have allot of harbor freight f style clamps, than home depot had the bessey 4 pack on sale for 15 & pick up 2 four packs. Now that I have used the bessey I love them & I hate my habor freight ones, I still use the harbor freight ones cause thats the only size I have in f style clamps like the 24" & 36". I have had good luck with Taylor tools so I'll look into them for longer f style clamps

I have been slowly replacing my HF clamps with Bessey 4 pack when HD has them on sale. I also put them on my Christmas and Birthday list. The last 4 pack was $20 bucks and they are twice as good as the HF clamps. I still use them but only if a glue up uses all the Bessey clamps up. Also want to say Taylor tools does stand buy what they sell. I got a bad saw blade and he refunded my money no questions asked.

More revolutions over a shorter distance on a similar diameter (higher thread pitch) would give you more clamping force for the same effort. Though less convenient this is actually a plus for clamps. It’s the same for fine vs. coarse thread bolts.

I have all of those. The Jorgensen grip is my favorite, bessey is my least liked. I like the Tay almost as good, plus my Tay ones have a deeper reach on the head. It goes in farther. They offer the regular distance, but I haven't used them. Pads come off all of them, I usually just use a board on top of the project. I've never put grip tape on the handles

Hey Jodee, you have identified some very important, but subtle differences between these F-clamps. The one thing I would like to bring up is the difference between quantity and quality ... let me explain. the Harbor Freight clamp took a lot more turns than the competition ... understand that having finer threads gives it more resolution which in turn means, in this context, better control over pressure exerted on the material being clamped. Not always a bad thing.

Hard to beat Bessey, but you do need to shop around. Just as you suggested, grab them when they go on sale at HD, which seems to be the best price for me. I also really like the Jorgensen, and grab a set every Christmas from Lowes, which seems to be when they put a great sale price on them. For Jorgensen, I will be fixing my pads with tape as you suggest. That's been my only issue with them, but seems like a simple fix.

I skipped around the video a little so if mentioned, I didn't see it. I live in FL (high humidity) and have had a problem with rust on the Harbor Freight clamps. Probably doesn't help that I am a casual user, but I spend extra time on the rails to make sure they stay rust free.

I have the harbor freight and the Bessy ones and I like the harbor freight handles better, although I have broke a couple of them and ended up drilling through the handle and the screw shank and putting a pin in it so they didn't ream out on the shaft anymore. What I like best about the harbor freight ones is the ones thatt have broke beyond repair I have been able to just take back and get new ones. I've had one out of eight Bessie clamps thatt when you try to clamp it down it just loosens and moves backwards because it doesn't engage with the cuts on the bar very well. Plus if you get a little bit of solvent on the Bessie handle it makes the paint soft and slippery and if you get laminate adhesive on the handle it's hard to get off because the lacquer thinner strips the paint off but I have wrapped my bessy handles with gaffers tape.

Hey gaff tape is a great idea as well! I use it for everything else I don't know why I haven't thought of that.

Hockey tape works well to wrap the handles. And at my house depot I can get 4pc Bessey clamps all the time 2x 6" and 2x 12" Bessey clamps for $23.99

My PEC Blem from Taytools was a nightmare to get the ruler back in. I swapped it for another (was charged shipping) and the second one was is slightly easier. I love the combo square but it's still fiddly.

I have about 30 Bessy clamps, between the 6" and 12" clamps. And they haven't ever started coming apart. I've been using them for about 1 year to 1 1/2 years. So idk what that's my experience..

I had several Harbor Freight clamps fail during a big glue up. These ended up being the most expensive clamps ever by the time I redid the whole project. Never again with the HFs!
