Happy December everyone! Today we are working on some last minute gift ideas. This project is a great way to use up fabric scraps and charm squares. Fabric coasters are fun to make, incredibly useful, and can be personalized in unique ways.
I've also provided a free pattern to piece together an adorable tree coaster. Check the OklaRoots website for the pattern, as well as a free SVG file for all you Cricut Maker users!
QUILTING TIP: To avoid the bunching of threads at the beginning of quilt lines follow these viewer provided tips below!
- Use a feeder fabric first. Run a scrap piece of fabric through the machine, and then run your quilt under the needle (don't clip the feeder piece first).
- Hold the top and bobbin threads before you start sewing. To do this, make sure you aren't using an automatic thread cutter (they pull the bobbin thread back under the face plate, making it hard to reach).
Happy Sewing!

One way to prevent the thread tangles at the beginning and end of stitching is to use a scrap leader/ender piece. Excellent video!

You can try two different things to eliminate all of those thread messes. Use a scrap of fabric as a starter/ender, or hold both your top and bobbin thread tails behind the needle until after you've made a few stitches. To keep those tails from getting caught in your next row, you really need to clip them off before starting the next row. Also, chain piecing will eliminate that problem. Binding tip I do: Instead of using a pencil to draw the diagonal line for connecting pieces, I take all pieces of binding (except for the first piece) and put them right sides down on my pressing mat. Fold the top corner down at a 45 degree corner and press that line instead of drawing it. Then I have a line to easily follow for stitching.

There are 2 ways I have used to prevent thread traps on the fabric. When starting an inch or more away from an edge or corner of a piece, I hold the thread to start the seam - just for a couple of stitches. To start at an edge (or corner) I use a scrap of fabric to chain piece start the seam. That way I cut off the knots with the fabric scrap.
@OklaRoots
@OklaRoots 4 года назад
Thanks Teresa! So I've used the scrap fabric for chain piecing, but I was trying to find a quicker way for the quilt lines. Do you just hold the top thread, or both bobbin and top?
@teresajudy7232

Loving your style... new subbie! Been sewing/quilting for years. Ordering my Cricut Maker this week - can’t wait 😊 LEADERS AND ENDERS are a lifesaver. Use scraps of fabric/batting to start off and end. All of those pesky threads end up on those pieces instead of your actual project 👍😊 I always use leaders and enders, especially when piecing a million half square triangles 🤣

Either pulling thread toward the back right or even holding the thread before starting to sew prevents the thread from getting caught in stitching. I noticed in precious videos you cut thread and leave thread where its at and begin stitching... I was like how does her thread not get caught in stitching or come out of needle!?! Then I saw this 😂😂😂 Love your vids and glad to have an opportunity to comment. Youve taught me so much already! ❤❤❤ ~ Dawn

Ok, so I'm really jealous, you have the bomb machine and here I am just hoping to get the Juki you have. Anyway, I've seen another professional sewer, like you, not me, the beginner who is still trying to sew a perfect straight quarter inch, hold the ends of the thread from the bobbin and the needle a second or two when she begins to sew. It keeps the thread from being snatched into your sew line, I think...again, I'm just a little ole beginner.

use scraps of material from same kind as you sew and start with it them slide your project as machine running already will help stabilise feed dogs and avoid mistakes if you need change stitch half way throughout sewing as well edges will have already tide edge with knot and when you finished you just cut them with snippers , great tips if you chain sewing . you use scrap as well helping your machine run smoothly when need hop over folds and bumps or wallet folds edges . for very bulky items as jeans I will use nails filler wrapped with duck tap so level are same and feed dog don't touch them as they are placed just behind machine feet.

Excellent idea. See, you are trying to make me brave. These are the perfect size to practice free motion and binding on a smaller scale. You're a genious. Also, using leaders and enders will help the thread not get caught at the beginning and end. Much neater and less time spent on cleaning up the edges. I saw a lady making a cross which I have been anxious to make and there were no stragglies. I was so amazed that, now, I keep all of my little unusable "clean up cuts" in a separate box to use as leaders and enders.

If you pull the thread out a little, and hold, by pressing down, before you start the next row, it will keep your thread out of the way, and keep it from nesting, and needing to use a seam ripper; where most tend to yank the thread out too hard or cut the wrong thread. there is a proper way to use a seam ripper; and be careful if you use a scissor. you can nip your project.

Using a leader scrap piece of fabric at the beginning and end of the stich line should help with the strays threads. Also, for me, I'd use a dark bobbin for the back fabric since it's darker than the top fabric and the thread is practically hidden.

for the binding, on something this small i'd go for the method angela walters shows in her foolproof binding video over on the bluprint channel here on youtube. it's a little bit more bulk i suppose, but it's very clever and much less fiddly on such a small piece. she goes on to machine sew the rest of the binding (which for coasters i probably would do too) but of course it's up to you if you'd rather do it by hand. (i noticed other people already mentioned leaders and enders, i use those too bc i swear my machine eats thread for breakfast)

I've got Pendleton Wool fabric remnants and I'm just not sure what to do with them? I wanted to make something cute. Like a cup warmer. I'm just afraid maybe it would easily slip out of my hand.

To avoid threads getting caught in my sewing, I hold the thread to the side as I begin a line of sewing.

Hi Jess, you are awesome!! I am a new fan too. Which cricut did you use? Assuming it is a new cricut model, do your think an older model (less expensive) would work as well? Thank you for the excellent, thorough videos. 😀
@OklaRoots
@OklaRoots 4 года назад
Hey there! So as long as it is a Cricut Maker it will work. My understanding is the older models don't cut fabric.

Maybe hold both strands of cotton at the back of the machine so the bottom one doesn't get pulled underneath 🇦🇺🇦🇺💕

Instead of batting do you think it would be a good idea to use the pot holder thermal batting to keep condensation from seeping through to the back? I use a lot of crochet coasters around my house and a few wonky quilted coasters... :) The Christmas tree is cute!

I only get those little stuck strands of thread when I straight line quilt on my machine that has an automatic thread cutter. I'm convinced that's the connection. I get rid of mine the same way as you do. It's a bummer.
@OklaRoots

You know what, Michelle, I think you are on to something! That thread cutter keeps the bobbin thread under the plate.... Thank you for saying this! I think this will solve my problem!

Hold the end of the thread when you start to sew and you will not have those thread ends in your sewing or you can use a lead cloth. A lead cloth is a piece of scrap fabric that you start sewing on and then bump your project up to the scrap fabric and continue to sew. This is another method of keeping the thread from knotting in your project.

So I like the machine for the embroidery feature. But besides that, I actually prefer sewing on my Juki 😱. I think I'm in the minority, though, as most everyone else prefers their Bernina to every other machine.
