Welcome to our fabric dyeing tutorial for dying cross stitch linen and Aida. This is by no means the way that you must do it and we are not professionals as far as tutorials go! We did this along with a two year old today so bear with us as we show you how we dye our fabric for the aqua and teal colors that we like and do some experimenting with liquid Rit Dye in quart sized jars!
Colors used today are Kelly Green, Evening Blue, Pearl Grey, Taupe, Tan, and Aquamarine. Please refer to video for the amounts used.

Just when you were saying you practice on your white on white fabrics, I was getting all hepped up thinking of what I could do with various shades of Kona cotton when I am running short on specific shades while scrap quilting. My brain is turning now! Your assistant is adorable. Even her meltdown was cute. I miss having kids around.

Thank you! She is pretty cute🥰 Great idea for dyeing quilt fabrics. I would use the salt or a fixative for that for sure because you will most likely be washing them later. Whatever the dye recommends. I have even seen people overdye prints with incredible results. Its fun to experiment!

Well that looked easy enough that I could do it. I am such a fraidy cat with trying some things. Especially when you have fabric that even though it is from Michael's it is still expensive. I liked your suggestion of using a scrap first. Thanks for the helpful hints. I wish we had videos of my #3 granddaughter's meltdowns...they were epic. It will all get better. 🙂

Thanks for the tips - I’m going to try it! I ordered some plastic screw on lids for mason jars from Amazon and they are so much easier to use for storing foods and such. They come with a sealing ring you can put inside for liquids and I bet they would be great for your dying projects. Easier than messing with the canning rings.

Great tutorial and a very cute little helper! I really want to try dying my own fabric and this has given me the confidence to just go and test it out. You also speak about coffee & tea dye, it's that just literally putting the white fabric in brewed tea or black coffee? Do you just adjust the darkness by how long you leave it in for and how brewed the tea is? Sorry these might be silly questions but I am a complete newbie when it comes to drying fabric!
@CraftyCottageStitches
@CraftyCottageStitches 2 года назад
Thank you Fiona! There are no silly questions ever😊 You are exactly right about coffee and tea dyeing. That is how you do it. We do heat set it with an iron or oven after doing that though. Watch it closely in the oven! There are great videos on it especially if you like mottling they show how to achieve fun results. Have a great time!

Great job. Thank you. When you do your next video and show these, will you go over the dye colors and amounts that you used with each one. I am not sure of the one that you really like to use a lot.
@CraftyCottageStitches
@CraftyCottageStitches 2 года назад
Hi Martha! The color we use the most is 1/2 tsp Kelly green and 1/4 tsp evening blue. Start with one quart of hot hot water and then dilute with water for how light you want it. For the light ones that I did on this video, it was two quarts of water.
@marthaabstein6046
@marthaabstein6046 2 года назад
@@CraftyCottageStitches What about the one at the end where you added Taupe to it. Was it also the Kelly Green and Evening Blue plus how much Taupe?
@CraftyCottageStitches

I added 1 part taupe
@alisonjanvrin5448
@alisonjanvrin5448 2 года назад
So instead of using so much dye and water and dumping out 1/2 of what you don’t use, why don’t you use 1/2 of a mixture or 1/4 of the dye if you are adding more water to make it lighter? Unless you are dying more than one piece of fabric. I love dying fabric and always dye my own. Great tutorial for beginners!!
@CraftyCottageStitches
@CraftyCottageStitches 2 года назад
Alot of the time we are dyeing multiple pieces of fabric and we add other colors. We like the color we get with the ratio we use and control that with dilution. We use to just wing it lol but we have a lot of people ask for the colors we use so we came up with this “recipe”😊
@suejameson1517
@suejameson1517 2 года назад
Really great tutorial and so much easier not to bake the fabric…that has always put me off. Do you find the holes shrink?. I use almost exclusively 14 count Aida and can’t stitch on anything much smaller,!
@CraftyCottageStitches
@CraftyCottageStitches 2 года назад
We do find that the holes shrink a bit when you fit dye. They shrink less with Aida. I find if the fabric sits in the dye for a long time there is more shrinkage but I don’t think it would be so significant that it would impact you seeing the holes to stitch (aka it doesn’t shrink it to like an 18 count instead or something). Do a test piece first to make sure and if you notice it shrinks to much for your comfort, you could really play with a 10 count Aida! Thank you so much for watching!

So if you want more mottling do you just not shake it?
@CraftyCottageStitches
@CraftyCottageStitches 2 года назад
Hi Lisa! I would think that would be the way to have more mottling. Also if theres not a lot of extra room in the jar. When we do ours we shake it up a lot
