I think your video may have given me enough courage to try it. I also had a Thai friend who has let me harvest some of her blue butterfly pea flowers and am really excited about dyeing fabric with that. It's a big experiment. Thanks for your videos!
Thank you so much for doing the video it was very informative. I will be picking up some walnut crystals very shortly. I hope things go well for you this school year here in the US it has been very tough, I live in Florida and it’s been a challenge to keep our life as normal as possible.
Thank you Michelle, This was really interesting with clear instructions. I am so sorry for the loss of your iron, sad, but, now you get to choose a new one! Happy. It's the small things that cheer us up. Stay safe and well.
Great video, Michelle, thank you for inviting us into your kitchen to watch you dye with walnut crystals! I thoroughly enjoyed it, and learned some tips. I look forward to any future videos from you - thank you for taking the time and effort and sharing with us :)
Thank you so much for such an informative process of various ways to use the walnut crystals. And....it did help when you explained clearly how to figure out the measurements for your project based on the count and desired border. You definitely are a teacher at heart and I’m happy to be on the learning end. I’m a visual learner, so videos are the perfect way for me to learn.
It’s super easy...and if you don’t like it then you can dye over it! You may well see that big piece that the iron spat over in the Procion video that I have lined up!
Michelle .. thanks so much for this tutorial .. you are a wonderful teacher ! Look forward to seeing more ... you are such a wonderful addition to the flosstube community ! Joanne
Great video! I never thought to use a plastic bag- so simple! I’m definitely going to try that next! I got some walnut crystals a couple weeks ago from 123 stitch. My order came and I opened it- oh Lordy was it a mess- in shipping the container of walnut crystals broke- it wasn’t bagged individually but with the rest of my order! Patterns-floss....ugh! Walnut crystals all over my kitchen counter! I cleaned it up- took the package outside and started shaking off walnut crystals from the patterns- those buggers go everywhere! The floss was a loss. I dialed up 123stitched and they replaced the floss no problems. I’m sure it broke randomly in shipping. When my replacement order came- those crystals were double bagged! Lol!
Wowsers...it was lucky that didn’t get wet otherwise that would have been a whole world of pain! Glad they got it sorted for you...great customer service! 😀
Hello from Oklahoma! Thank you so much for sharing your time and knowledge of working with walnut crystals with us! I'm eager to get some crystals and have a go!
Now I want to dig out my old jar of walnut crystals and do some playing! (I've dyed paper in the past and used it as a writing ink, but nothing with fabric.) Great video and I am loving going back through your old videos. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank was wonderful, I loved everything . Never thought about putting my fabric in a bag or putting the paper towel over the container to catch the odd dye crystals that don't dissolve. I am off to get those Walnut crystals and some sponges, thanks again for the great video it was fabulous.
Great tutorial Michelle. I've had a go and was pleased with my results. Now to find more fabric to dye, or over dye my experiments! Love a technique that just let's you play. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Awesome ideas! I have used Rit dye to dye even weave but also because I didn’t know about walnut crystals I used walnuts from a tree next door to dye fabric. I love your ideas and will be trying them out! I sometimes have a hard time deciding how dark to get the fabric when wet as it is so much lighter when dry. Thank you!
Great dyeing tips. I’ve been thinking about dyeing some Aida but haven’t found the nerve yet. Lol. I bought the walnut crystals and after watching this video,I’m going to give it a shot! Great inspiration!
Thank you so much, Michelle. I’ve been playing around with RIT and walnut crystals and you gave me new ideas. Stay well and I look forward to your next video. 😉
Thanks for the dying instruction. I have never used walnut crystals, but will be ordering some tomorrow. I have dyed quilt fabric in gradations of color and really enjoyed the process and the outcome. The witch will look great on the “frame” piece. Love the lab apron.
Thanks for your demonstration. I’ve done tea/coffee dying, but I really like the look and shade of the walnut crystals. I have some Rit and some white fabrics, but I think I’ll wait till I get some crystals to do the dying. Good explanation.
Thanks for this video Michelle. It was very informative and I have ordered a whole 20 grams of walnut crystals from Ebay! I remembered you said previously that it only takes a small amount. Good tip about the kitchen paper too....I'd have ended up using a dishcloth! 😂😍
Thank you for all the different ways to dye fabric. I am going to try again with a white and cream fabric. Happy stitching. Oh, and I will use gloves too.
Very interesting. I just might try it myself. Now that I see you can do it in jars and use warm water, it looks easy. Thanks so much. I really enjoy your videos.
Thanks for the inspiration, Michelle. I used to attend calligraphy classes and we used walnut crystals for making ink and marbling paper but I didn’t consider them for dyeing fabric. Thanks for sharing the process. Hope you can get yourself sorted with a new iron before Wales goes into it’s ‘fire break’ lockdown 😬. Best wishes.
I ordered one today!! Only a cheap one ....I don’t iron clothes 😂 so it’s just for fabric! Plus my mum has an iron fetish so no doubt next time I see her she’ll try and give me an iron!
@@mommalovesyougb 🤣 Oh yeah, you absolutely have the right priorities there! My mum was the same and, bless her, always took pity on me when she came round - with 4 kids my ironing basket often resembled Cleopatras’s Needle, teetering towards the kitchen ceiling!! 👍
This was really interesting, thanks for posting. I’m thinking about dyeing some flosses for Bayeux Tapestry reproductions and other historical stitching, so this is really helpful. I really love the added green!
@@mommalovesyougb It's really fun. I'm a medieval historian so it helps me better understand the lives of medieval woman and teach my students about them.
I really learned some great techniques...I definitely will give this a try..thanks. Update..just ordered walnut crystals from Amazon.. I’m so excited 😀
Thank you for doing this video. I'm going to dig out my walnut crystals and dye some white Aida that I never thought I'd use. Sorry to hear about your iron! I've found thrift stores to be a great source for irons, especially the older irons that get hotter!
Thank you so much for this video. You’ve given me a new outlook on what fabric I can use for projects, and how I can customize the fabric. One question though.... it’s about rinsing....when you rinse, do you use hot water, cold water, how long do you rinse? I assume the amount of time you rinse effects the color...and also do you actually have to rinse? Thanks again....you are such a pleasure to watch and listen to!
Rinsing is a difficult one here as you can lose a lot of colour. Sometimes I rinse and sometimes not, sometimes a little and sometimes a lot! I tend to look at the fabric in my hands and decide. If you don’t want to rinse too much colour out then you can squeeze as much of the dye water out as you can (don’t wring) and then just hang to dry. Provided it’s not dripping wet then you won’t get colour runs
This was brilliant 😁😁😁 I loved the idea of using the dye to make a darker frame then using a wet sponge on the middle to blend. Honestly, you are one of the best things that has happened to Flosstube Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. So once the fabric is dyed, dry and ironed, it is color fast? Where does the salt come in? Thanks again for everything.
Hi Heather... I wouldn’t say that any hand dyed fabrics are properly colourfast. I never wash anything afterwards (usually because I’ve used overdyed flosses and the same applies to them). I used salt when I dye with Rit in a jar.... you don’t need it for walnut crystals 😀
Hi Michelle, thanks for a great video. I bought some walnut crystals off Ebay a few weeks ago. Was nervous about using them. I’m going to try them now as your fabrics all turned out great. Sorry about your iron dying a death. X
I bought the crystals as they are but there are instructions on how to make dye from the walnut shells (which is then crystallized) on the internet. From what I read it involves lots of boiling over a few days. Have a look and see what you can find..it would be interesting to try 😀
Love your techniques. Got some encouragement to might try dying some fabric. Do you at some point soak it in vinegar or salt to seal the color? I heard of dying with coffee and tea and adding salt. Thanks so much for this video!
I don’t as it is a direct dye....but I never wash anything after stitching either. You could possibly give it a try by adding it to the jar or bag method. Give it a google and see what comes up 😃
I have a big piece of red Aida and want it to be more of a pomegranate color or purplish , calm it down a lot. Can I use my liquid walnut dye to calm this red down?
I tried the walnut dye for the first time. I made my linen wet and let it sit in a bag for about 10 minutes. I like the color but don’t seem to have any modeling on it. What should I do different?
This is a great video! Thank you! Does anyone know a good source for large pieces of linen or even weave in the States? I was hoping to purchase around a yard and have it be somewhat affordable. And, this might be weird, but your eyelashes looked really nice! :)
Thanks so much! I'm not sure about the large pieces but I've heard that people buy fabric from Heaven and Earth Designs. We have several shops that allow you to buy by the metre so I guess you could Google that??
@@mommalovesyougb thanks for taking the time to come back and reply! I appreciate the suggestion and look forward to attempting to dye some fabric myself. Thank you for the great video and I hope you and your family are safe and happy
Hi, can I ask I have seen you find some brilliant eBay items I am looking particularly for charts but not necessarily a particular brand when I put my searches in I seem to just get a lot of magazine pages to scroll through. Can you give me any pointers please? Many thanks in advance. Happy stitching 🧵 thank you for the great videos
Hi Susan...I would work out which designers you like best and search for those (also put an alert on). If you find someone selling a chart you like the always have a look and see what else they have.
