I wonder if Citroen appreciated the commitment and concern for quality that's evident among the workers in this video. So much done by hand, so many components designed for light weight and easy assembly, an incredibly well-conceived car, put together in a livable, almost spotless factory, on assembly lines for the most part moved by hand...
What have a 2CV and an Aston Martin got in common- they are both hand built. This is one of the most charming videos I have ever seen of car building. All those fit, young employees doing a great job, the work environment looks fun and the simplicity of the car is fantastic. We should all be driving cars like this today. This was a car that you actually drove, not sat in and pressed buttons. Happy days.
My Charleston was made here in September 1989, my 3rd new 2CV6 since 1978. Arrived in Australia in May 1990. The first RHD Charleston to come out of Portugal in 1989. 12 more followed coming to Australia. Amazing to see a 40 year old production method built largely by hand. In 1982 I picked up a new Paris built Charleston which I drove for 15 months across Europe, UK, Ireland, USA & Canada. The French built car was better built - especially for rust proofing.
Got a 2CV club in Red vallelunga like in the clip, build at this factory in 1990 about 1000 cars from the last one. Can't compare its rust proofing to a French one as I never owned another 2CV but I have repaired a fair amount of rust on it since I got it. Love the thing. it is the most reliable car I have ever owned and a blast to drive in the summer. It has never let me down and is the only car I have had that has not dropped any fluids on the garage floor.
My Portuguese Charleston had a front floor rust repair under warranty at age 3 years old. Never had this issue with the 2 French built cars... Maybe the quality of the steel or rustproofing.
Estou a lembrar-me do Dyane Dyanissima e a Dyane Nazaré
2CV had separate chassis and body and so had still the CX I was crashed badly on my CX from rear. I just bought another CX with good body but wrecked engine, lifted the bodies ut f chassis, swapped them and in two dayys a new CX. Little problem in checking as color had changes in registry papers..
Brawo !

That's set !! The 2 horses should have been like a warning....the economic model not to exceed ! Easy to build... Easy fixe it.... Economic with less pollution... Practical and fun.....! But people always want more, bigger, faster and luxury..., like this everyone knows the rest....and why today we pay the price !! Are they human beings fondamently stupids or they dot it on purpose ?
The car I had the more fun with. We used to cram 5 rugby players and go to games and the beach or to pubs. A trick to entertain people sitting outside beer joints was to lift it off the ground between six guys and properly "park" it in a tight space.

Was für eine entschleunigte Zeit. Kein Roboter, Jeder Arbeiter konnte so seinen Lebensunterhalt verdienen.
MPG on the 2CV depends on what years and engines of those years . The HP started at 9 hp up to 33hp , With the 9hp engine the car can top out at 40 mph and get some 80 MPG . Just right for in town driving and out on chipped & tire country lanes . As time went by the hp increased also . At 33 hp the little 2CV can reach speeds up to 70 mph . It still took a day and a half to get to that speed . No but about something like 42 sec @ 40 mph with the 9 hp engine . As time went by and hp increased these figures got better . The first engines was two cylinders . A boxer engine of 375cc and it being air cooled . All of these 2CV cars had 2 cylinder boxer engines . There was other things about these cars that was great . They was light weight . The suspension was simple and clever at the same time . It was self leveling on unequal ground . The French did this by means of linking fore and aft wheels . Doing this setup this gave the softest ride of any car . This also gave the car a lot of body roll also . So soft in fact that you can have a basket of eggs in the back seat and drive the car threw a farm field and never have a cracked egg . That is how soft the ride really is . It is much softer than the best Rolls Royce even to this day and it is so simple . There is a lot of hatters of the French and the French did so much for the USA during the Revolutionary war . They built and gave US ALL the freedom we have from that war . With out them we would have lost that war and still be under the British command to this day . They built and gave us the Statue of Liberty as a gift for our freedom . They sold us the Louisiana Territory that was called The Louisiana Purchase in 1803 . But this is way off . I can say this that the French had great inventors and inventions . This include aircraft . To the French it is not just their inventions it's the art they mix in with it . Great pride and care . Everything have to be simple .
@@terencejay8845 No, it was rated as two horse-power under the french taxation system (not the actual hp, but calculated using a formula from the engine size). Other French cars were known by their CV rating, like the Citroen Traction Avant 11CV. British cars were rated similarly - like the Standard 8.
Ah Martin, that has been my wish for the past 40 years! I used to own one in the 1960s and I consider it to be the very best of cars, among the many I have since owned, re comfort, reliability due mostly to the simplicity of the design and so very cheap to run. I just cannot figure out why Citroën does not replicate the 2CV, but possibly with a still small 2-cylinder motor albeit with modern technology. Suspension, simplicity of body, doors etc could be exactly the same... Maybe they could sell the design to India?
@@lautrey6531 I closest I ever came to owning one was in 1976 when my wife and I went to look at a new one on sale in the UK for 2700 pounds. She said she'd rather walk. Here in Australia, the odd 2CV comes up for sale for many times that amount...
@@logotrikes strange coincidence I am in Perth (WA)! I had my 2CV in Mauritius where I was born. Yes re 2CV are expensive on the rare occasions they become available. Cheers Martin from a cold and wet Perth.
That was great fun to watch this. It was like comedy where they turned the cabin over and transported it on the floor. But a great car having wonderful ideas.
I wish it continued production.. It was a very funny and very cute car.. I would be very happy if I owned a CV2. Greetings from Izmir.*** Keşke üretimi devam etseydi.. Çok komik ve çok sevimli bir otomobildi.. İzmir/Türkiye den selamlar.
Moments of note. 1:30 and 6:42 Hanging the rear doors. 5:20 Personal steering wheel and column 7:04 NSR (in France) sidelight fault 9:55 How much greener we would be if cars were still like that.
I think you can make it again for poor countries and countrysides where road safety is not much of concern as due to lack of roads or cheap rural transport vehicle also the van model.....also known as rural egg transporter
