Is it better to have a compact tractor or a compact track loader to move your large pile of dirt? Neil and Garrett put the LX3310 and the SVL97-2 to the test to see which is the better option, the fast-moving versatile compact tractor, or the construction-level equipment that costs three times as much.

They both have their place, but as a homeowber I'll take the tractor (versatility, lower cost) anyday. It would have been interesting to see how the two did if you had swapped. Skilled tractor operator vs novice track loader operator. Skill might have been the big difference, as those tractor buckets looked 'less than full' most of the time.
@paullambert2668
@paullambert2668 11 месяцев назад
I was thinking that too. Swap operators could have made a big difference. Garret was prioritising speed over full buckets - but the 20 seconds it would have taken to get a full bucket would have easily paid off in doing half as many trips. My B2601 I can get a pretty consistently full bucket, and I can see the heaped bucket from the operator position. True, it spills a lot if you drive full speed - and that may have been part of the problem, but I think I recall Neil having an accumulator on his which might help. The reality is that they're very different machines, and not a lot of people would be cross-shopping a $90K track loader against a $30K tractor. Fun all the same.

In my option a skid steer is WAY better at moving dirt once you start doing the fine grading. You can see the cutting edge on a skid steer while operating vs a tractor where you have to make an educated guess.

Having moved multiple triple axle loads of driveway mix with a tractor, I can say that having the skill to fill up the bucket all the way with one consistent motion is key to moving material. Half buckets don't cut it. Obviously a skid steer will out perform a tractor any day, but with a skilled operator you can 100% get the job done in either equipment.

This was one of the most entertaining fun videos I’ve seen in a while. Garrets learning some important stuff here. The one piece of advice I was given, and I continue to pass forward is no matter what skill your trying to master, it takes two fundamental things to get it done. 1. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. And 2. Perfect practice makes perfect. If you can do those two things repetitively, your likely to nail it to the wall!

Yeah, the lack of a tooth bar, having to switch to low range to get any push, lack of power and weight and traction, lack of visibility, etc etc is why "construction" equipment has the name it has. But the tractor has just as much versatility for a fraction of the cost...will just take you longer. In construction, time is money.
@wheelerrogers7690

The visibility is different. I volunteered a fair, and the compact tractor was my preferred machine to move stuff since you can see on all sides of you, unlike a tractor.

What the tractor is poor at is being stable over rough ground. So much is lost out of the bucket plus all the bouncing takes its toll on the operator that a skid steer is the optimal choice for this type of work. The skid steer also has a much lower center of gravity so it handles better. The tractor gets the work done, just takes longer and requires a bit more skill and patience.
@kdegraa

Not sure about other operators but whenever I’m doing front end loader work the tractor stays in low range. Of course this would have worked with this video.

@@kdegraa For this model tractor. My L4060 has 6 ranges, and Medium in low works perfect for loader work for filling, then high for transport, but my B2410 is low range only for this work. If I put the L4060 intt low/low it will dig itself a hole trying to fill the bucket.

I have a 50hp tractor, and a skid steer. The skid steer blow the tractor out of the water, and im in the process to change my implement to skid steer stuff. The only 2 advantage the tractor had on the skid steer it the weight/traction to just pull. And the snowblower you can match that 45hp pto power, vs. The ~20 hp hydraulic can be provided on the skid steer.

I'm moving a lot of dirt building a shooting range in my yard and I'm using a larger tractor but wishing I had a track loader. The hydraulics on a track loader are so much faster than on tractors, especially when needing to dump at near full height. However, the tractor will get the job done though it will take more time.

I dug a 120 ft diameter pond to 20 ft deep with a 25 hp hydrostatic tractor roughly equal to the L2501. I did have to give up and hire a dozer when I couldn't get bucket teeth (add on for $180) to break the clay at that depth, needing the clay for sealing the pond.

It wasn't 20ft deep closer to 16 maybe 17ft. You can't dig directly underneath the hoe the entire length of a pond without ending up in the pond so I'm assuming your saying you went 20ft deep with the front bucket with the length of the pond only being 120ft without getting it stuck??? Cool story bro

I haven't seen a loader for that small of a tractor with the dampers. The dampers are expensive. Roughly $300 for the low end ones. 2 needed for the most basic setup. Also, the dampers need to be protected and it's hard to find a good place for them on a small loader.

Although, this was a great, well thought, entertaining out video, it was obviously set up to enhance your company’s ability to sell/rent more construction equipment. The only reason I say that is because you had your son just ramming into the pile. Maybe he would get a full bucket maybe not. Had you showed him how to use his bucket to reach over the top of the pile and bring a bucket of back towards him and then pick it up, he would have gotten a full bucket most of the time. You also didn’t compare fuel usage. I do like your videos and look forward to each one, I don’t like seeing you have your son just beat up a piece of equipment to make a sales point.

Never run your tractor in high gear when doing loader work. He’s putting so much unnecessary stress on the machine at those speeds. Even the manufacturer recommendations in the manual suggest to remain in low doing loader work and suggests only going into medium if you are carrying the load on flat smooth surfaces. I can only imagine how much he was bouncing around with a full bucket load, going full speed.

@@aspitofmud6257 , if his dad didn’t work for Messicks, I doubt he would allow his son to put that much stress on the machine.
