Great idea to check the softpoints again out of the shorty. My bet is on the Gold Dot vs. that Black stuff. If you have a 300 BLK that would be also a sweet comparison to the short 5.56. The 150 grain Speer GD 300 BLK would probably let the 5.56s shit their pants in the gel 😂

I bought 6.5 Grendel Hornady Black ammo. It was cheapest I could find at the time. Wasn’t disappointed at all. Great accuracy! Very good inexpensive ammo!

5.56mm / .223 great caliber for all around testing and results. The Black ammo is definitely good ammo. I prefer the longer barrels but, do not have a problem with either barrel lengths all good thanks for sharing and be safe. Good to go here Tools buddy. ⭐️⭐️🇺🇸⭐️⭐️

Thanks for doing this. Each of our vehicle's GHB includes an AR pistol. One has a 7.5-inch barrel. It's mags are loaded with 55gr. V-Max rounds. The other has a 10.5-inch barrel. Its mags are loaded with the Hornaday BLACK SBR round.

Tools, I am so glad you did this test. I have cases of this ammo when I owned a couple of AR pistols but financial problems led me to having to sell them. I kept the ammo and I'm planning on getting a 16inch this week and I was curious as to how the ammo would do. You more than cleared up my concerns. This round is just devastating out of the 16 inch.

That load may very well be one of the better loads for guys who hunt whitetails and hogs with one. Especially from an 18" or a 20" barrel, but the 16" seemed to do just fine as well. Expansion looks like it would still happen reliably even a bit below the impact velocity from your 10.5" tube. Impact velocity from the 16" barrel wood be similar to your 10.5" barrels 28yd velo at just over 100yds. If you stretched it to an 18-20" barrel yoy might gain another 50 yards of reliable expansion and penetration.

Like you said, a $10 box of soft points would do the job too, but man i love the way both of them expanded respective to each barrel length. Idk what it is, but it just seems like those are very well engineered projectiles. Imagine if they used those in a full power load and you shot it out of a 20inch barrel? I mean that would be MEAN bastard of a round. Very cool

Barrel got jammed up on it once but once you get them running right they're well machined tools. I'd have to look to know exact model I can't remember off the top of my head.

I'm liken the 5.56/.223 test Tools. I'm pretty interested in that 10.5" performance. I'd love to see a few standard soft point and maybe some Amax bullets. Love what you do. To be on the safe side I would remove that buffer tube and replace it with a Pistol buffer tube . If you remember in ATF's earlier letter concerning what is an SBR that specially showed a Pistol buffer tube as being legal , as it always was but the buffer tubes with adjustment or attachment points were not . But now they are saying you must destroy or alter the brace so it cannot be reattached even though the Director said you only have to remove it from the firearm . ATF's vague wording will mean that it is up to the agents interpretation of whether it is readily accessible or readily convertible . Take your brace and bury it in the woods not on your property as plastic won't rust .

Short short memories…. Only like 3 models of braces go on the standard carbine tube all of which came out post 2017 the other 10+ are designed to go on that “pistol” tube you speak of. Everyone seems to have forgotten. The rouge banana republic will screw whom ever they chose for whatever they make up. If they can order parts (as a federal agency) that aren’t really available in the wild, then take unlimited resources to fabricate a sleeve and remanufacture a de-milled RPG to convict someone. Why can’t or won’t they change whatever they want. Or drill out your 13.7” or 14.5” pin & weld, spin the muzzle device off and convict you. You all need to wake up to the reality of what you are dealing with.

@@gadsdenjim8785 Then you must remember before the pistol brace was a thing that AR's were sold as a HANDGUN and they all came with a smooth buffer tube and ATF ruled that having a Rifle ( their wording not mine ) buffer tube on it and having an AR stock that could go onto it was considered readily assembly and readily convertible to an SBR . Remember that you could not buy an upper with a barrel length of less than 16" unless the barrel was pinned and welded with an extended flash hider or brake or a Remington 14 " 870 shotgun barrel without submitting a copy of your NFA tax stamp . That all changed when the pistol brace firearms came out , but that can all change back . The Mossberg shockwave and the Remington TAC 14 and their likes will be the next target of ATF to rule on . And by the way , ATF does not make a law but the Att. Gen. can and has been given the authority by Congress , I repeat by Congress , to make amendments to the NFA & GCA and an amendment is considered a law . That is how Donald Trump had the ATF rule on bump stocks and his Att. Gen. signed it to be an amendment to the NFA thus making bump stocks illegal . And this was the exact same procedure used for the pistol braces . It is done under what is called " administrative law " . Now Congress can take away the authority of rule making from all these Federal agencies but I don't see them doing so because then they would have to do some work passing laws and they are lazy and are more concerned with their parties agendas and fund raising .

Great info. I like the Hornady 75 gr 22 cal bullets. Very accurate. Most of the soft point 22 cal bullets are made for varmints. There are some 22 cal made for deer.

Kudos to your opinion on the brace. Just wait till this fiasco gets settled and then you can put a brace on that sweet little rig. I'm with you on the performance. They claimed it's calibrated for a short barrel. Will 10.5 is pretty standard for an AR pistol, so I wanted to see better expansion. I doubt 1 more inch would really change the outcome. Like I said. LOL. Finally an ammo you liked and I am glad to see that. I have run that ammo in my 11.5 SBR and it did perform well. Cost is a big factor of course. Is it worth the cost? Not really.

I found some of the projectiles for sale as factory seconds. I loaded them to 2700 fps with cfe 223 from an 18 inch barrel. They are very accurate from a 1 in 9 twist, and do a better job on hogs than any other bullet I have tried.

I didn't know that the Hornady Black ammo was a series of different loadings. I just bought some of the Black 75gr BTHP, didn't realize they also came with their interlock projectiles! As for the optic, I just recently bought one of the newer 3x PrimaryArms microprisms and absolutely love it. My girlfriend has an astigmatism, so she normally has trouble with most red dot or magnified illuminated optics, but has no problems at all with the prism.

Out of the 16in barrel the Black made the jelly jump as much as the Gold Dot. I agree for the price soft points will do the job for less money. I got caliper out & checked 2 of 223 rounds vs 4 of5.56 for differences & not really any. The drop in fps between muzzle & 100yds on a couple of boxes matches your Lab Radar at apx. 200fps drop. Great info coming from the Lab. 🌟 👍

Nice test. You said with the magnifier the dot looks like a big smear, for anyone looking for a prism optic, MidwayUSA has the 1x Vortex Spitfire on sale for $149 out the door. Amazing deal, saves about $100. I bought one this morning. I've seen videos of people using a magnifier with the Spitfire even though I thought prisms didn't work with magnifiers, but what do I know.

Funny you mention that, I was actually looking at the OG style ring sights for it the other day but looks like they come from the Uk and are pretty pricey. I would be your are correct. A generic PSP from the 10.5" will out expand that round. Will be interesting to see. But Hornady really puts in time to engineer and test their projectiles and ammo-lots. So, I'll give it a reliability factor that maybe others can't.

Out of the longer barrel this load might make a decent med deer load out to 100 yds. The expanded bullets look very good in the longer barrel. Out of the short barrel the velocity is nearly identical to an AK pistol in 7.62X39mm with a 10-12'' barrel but the projectile is 75gr vs 123gr. How about a comparison of the 2 in pistols?

I have some Hornady black in 7.62x39 with the 123gr SST bullet, awesome round and very accurate out of my AR.

Man I'm not so sure about how well this ammo works.. I'm not sure if it's the same but I've got some 10mm ammo that pushes damn near the same energy foot pounds. Thanks for the info. Happy Father's Day yall!!

Thanks TnT.. I think most modern 5.56|.223 ammo would be fine for home defense; with the *possible* exception of the 855. The best in my book is the bonded soft point like this Hornady, the Gold Dots, and the Federal TBBC. Barrier blindness is important. Whether they are worth twice as much as standard rounds is another (personal-budget) question.
