Fail or Flying Colors...? The 100k Service for my Porsche 911

My favourite type of Porsche owner - not afraid to rack up the miles. This is what owning a car is all about. I hope you will keep this car for at least 10 years. Would love to hear your report on it.

I'm sure a highly rated body shop would have charged less than half the amount you paid to the dealer to tighten the bolts & line the panels all back up.

I just had a 100k service on my 2013 Porsche Cayenne Turbo and it was a smooth process with very few issues found. Taking care of them properly is the main thing.

991.1 will be a timeless classic. I own a 991.1 targa gts manual and 997 gt3

We all dread those calls from the service department. However, it could have been worse and despite the cost it is always good to get your car back in 100% condition.

Love the video and your 911. Amazing dealership too. Only can we all take a moment to see we live in a world that can charge any person with a lovely car enough money to fund a family household for a month for just 2 days of skilled labour in a beautiful, warm and fully equipped workshop. Nope. Scathed is what you got (at least from my perspective). You have THEE perfect garage for that project. Complete with a perfect lift that would bring it up to waste height so you wouldn’t even have to bend over! You, sir, have a beautiful set up!

That, my friend, is a design flaw. Unfortunately, my 981 Cayman probably has the same issue. I better 'find it' before my CPO expires! If not, I'm turning the wrench myself. However... I LOVE how our cars are designed for race-track maintenance. I pulled the rear wing and back bumper off in 20 minutes just so I could polish the mufflers ;-) I bought my 981 w/ 52k miles on it, it now has 62k miles in 7 months. Puts a grin on my face every day... Porsches are meant to be driven!

Crazy I just picked my 997 4S up from it’s 100k service today too. Mine came to $2000 because the coolant reservoir was cracked.

whenever i hear about these services, for any car really most of it is...inspect, which means look at, and for those who can change their own oil, well look at , tires, fluid levels etc, shouldn't be a stretch. now the hood thing was and unpleasant surprise so no choice there. glad its fixed , keep the videos going

Brings new meaning to the term "getting screwed". I guess the next time someone tells you that you've got a screw loose you can correct them. ;-)

I know that's a lot of labor, but that's just bad design and criminal... $2500 to tighten something that if designed better maybe be a 1 hour task and no removal of body parts. :(

I bought my 2014 991.1 a year ago today, which had 9,900 miles on the clock when I bought it and now has 18,000 on the clock, but I love driving this incredible car. I’ve been tempted with a 2017 GTS, and most recently a 2021 black GT4. I didn’t pull the trigger on either of them and I am still happy with my Racing Yellow 911 here in the Arizona winter (70F). I threw the last comment for my Liverpool fan James...😂😂😂😂😂

Keep on driving James, that's what they're made for. To give you an idea of pricing in Oz; Done 8,000km so far in a little under 5 months. Did a minor (44,000km - 28,000 miles first delivered in Jan 2015) service and general inspection recently in Sydney for A$680 (- USD530) and a pair of new wipers (A$160). Due for some new rear tires (approx A$1,300 for a set of two - USD 1,000) and new back pads and discs soon as well, quoted A$1,870 - USD 1,450). Probably new front tires and brakes with next year's intermediate service. All part of the fun of using it... But USD 2500 stings for some re-adjusting.

$200 for an oil change at dealership. In NJ it was $500 in 2016 haven't been back since now I DIY

The Author of this video has shown, in other videos, that he's a pretty decent shade tree mechanic. I chuckled at some of the inspection items (check that the horn works!?!), as they are items that if you drive the car, you'd notice being off kilter immediately. The hood issue is another question, but again I think this Author could have done that too. I have a 2002 996 Turbo that I got new at the factory in Zuffenhausen. Currently has about 80,000 miles on it. Only serious issue was that I had to have the clutch replaced, about $12K, but while the engine was out, I had the dealer install not just a clutch disk, but also a new flywheel, throwout bearing and pressure plate. I would have done that myself too except I don't have the facilities to get the car high enough to drop the engine and transmission out the bottom. Otherwise, the car has never been back to the local dealer once in 22 years. Oil change, cabin filter and air cleaner changes, etc., are child's play with a little patience and there are numerous RU-vid videos to help you out on almost anything. I'll admit I've built race cars and a Bonneville streamliner, so I probably have a little more knowledge than the average Joe or Jane, but really it isn't rocket science and with a decent set of hand tools and some patience almost anybody can keep a Porsche running barring something major. I replaced the plastic coolant tubes on a Cayenne we had, and that job was more serious, probably a bit too much for somebody not pretty good. FWIF, the Cayenne was basically a piece of junk.

Quick question; what color are those rims? Did you have them painted or powder coated? I have a similar spec and that color combo with the Agate Gray is superb.

I have 198k on my 2000 carrera white on savvanah beige with almost every option at the time...MSRP $101,420 and I get more people on a daily basis ask "what year is your car?" OR "wow, your car looks new, what year is it?" and my car has been driven like a Porsche needs to be driven...regularly, often, daily, consistently and with regular maintenance...I did a chain. tensioner etc service in may and replaced everything required when you pull an engine...now I will ride this until 300k at which time it will go see raby for a performance upgrade build and start all over again...PORSCHE, once its in you, you dont get rid of it!!! cheers!!!

Gotta get out there in it. I'm in SoCal, so no excuses- you're an inspiration, great that you've got 100k+. Well done.

Do you know how to access the front spoiler pump on a 991.1 Turbo S??

My 2012 991 911, has Metal Mesh Screens at BOTH sides, installed at the Front Bumper Air Intakes for the AC Radiators. One radiator got hit on the Highway by either a stone or bolt and leaked, had to replace and they're $379 for Part (Stock)- High Performance $538 at Pelican Parts.

Anyone been bothered to fit mesh grilles in the front bumper to stop leaves and stones? Worth it ? Thanks.

Had my 997.2 C2S PDK with 64500 miles for 1 week. Great so far. I’m nervous about costs as my missus didn’t really want me to get it as we are in a tighter budget. Fuel is already a lot more than my X3 35D! One question to anyone, it feels a bit scary at speed on a straight as the front end feels like it’s gonna take off. Is this normal? i just did the 40000 miles service on my 991.2 cs, and the dealer quoted me $3500 including tax. an indy porsche shop near my house charged me $1050.

did you consider duct tape as alternative to the screw replacement? duct tape is totally underestimated!

I feel you. I went to service yesterday and was told to replace my PCM(nav didn't work, rebooting) and it cost me 3150 + tax.

I live in Minneapolis too. My 997.1 has 63K on it but Ill be taking it to Iamola.

I seriously hope they put some effing thread locker on those bolts to keep them from backing out again!

Thats not that bad. I picked up a 2011 987.2 cayman about 4 months. Right after buying i took it to an independent porsche mechanic and dropped 2k engine oil, pdk service(both oils and filter), coolant, steering and brake flush. Next its new plugs and a set of pilot sport tires

Greetings from the UK. I had a 997 from new 2005-12. Always dreaded the trip to the OPC for servicing. In the UK a 911 with over 100k is almost unheard of unless it is some 25+ year old 1980's Carrera, 964 or 993. Most are weekend cars and owners sh1t themselves they will lose tens of thousands of pounds once they get over 50,000 miles.

Last week I spent £1058 on a 8 year 42k miles service. That was the same as the pre service qoute. But oh no, as luck would have it, the day before the service I got a dreaded yellow cooling system warning on the dash. Long story short a further £1068. We replaced 6 of the 8 changeover valves. Parts were less than 50% of the bill. Why 6 valves? Well 2 were already swapped to a never version by the previous owner, and I didn't want to run the risk of it happening again on any of the remaining original COVs that we know needed to be revised by Porsche after the original parts kept failing early model years. So yeah, 1k turned I to 2k pretty quickly.

I hope to god they put some blue locktite on those bolts.

Is your 991.1 a Base model?

I know it's a little cliche' but I've always told my son: 1. Don't ever go to the dealer, buy the tools and learn how to fix it yourself. 2. If you think you need to go to the dealer, see rule #1 then find a good and fair indy. 3. If you are not able to follow rules #1 and #2, part it out and call the junk yard to pick up the carcass.

Most people don’t realize that these things are assembled like a mechanical watch, and to get to something simple l like this…you have to take parts off to get to the screw’s themselves.

l can understand $1500 if they are replacing everything you mentioned, but why so expensive if they are just checking fluid levels, break pads etc. for example. checking the fluid level in your differential is al lot less expensive than replacing the fluid!

Convinced me to buy a Nissan 400z. $2400 to replace 3 screws is a bit much.

James, 100,000 miles is nothing. My old Honda CR-V has 205,000 miles that a Porsche friend now has and a co-worker where I used to work before retiring had 310,000 miles on his Toyota Camry before it got t-boned at an intersection. Yeah I know, they are reliable Japanese cars and also why I turned down a Macan and bought an Acura RDX. Both my 911s are low mileage as they are sunny day vehicles and toys.

I would say you got away unscathed for a 100k service. Considering and anyone that owns a Porsche would agree. Or any other high end car. These are not Toyota or Honda’s.

A close up view of the 3 problem screws would have been nice. Your photography, editing, narrative, etc. are great, but other owners like me could benefit from seeing the exact problem. Please stop with the music.
