In this episode of the Life After Diets podcast, we're diving into "Overcoming Binge Eating" by Dr. Christopher G. Fairbairn. It's a key book behind a lot of the binge eating treatment programs here in the UK, endorsed by major organizations like the eating disorder charity BEAT. But let's be honest, we both came into this with a bit of skepticism. This book is a big deal in the UK, but it's not something Stef was familiar with stateside, especially not in the day-to-day trenches of eating disorder treatment.
So, who's Dr. Fairbairn? He's the guy who, back in the late '70s or early '80s, started piecing together what we now understand about bulimia and binge eating. He worked out that what was being treated as a weird form of anorexia was actually something else entirely. Teaming up with Cosmopolitan magazine (of all platforms), he managed to get the word out and collect data on bulimia, basically putting binge eating disorders on the map.
Now, let's get into the meat of it. We both had our gripes with the book, mainly how it handles the treatment approach. It's very much steeped in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which, don't get me wrong, has its merits. But it feels like it's missing the emotional depth and complexity of eating disorders. Like, the book suggests that when you feel a binge coming on, you should try exercising or hitting up friends. It sounds a bit too simplistic for something as complicated as an eating disorder, right?
We also picked apart the book's views on regular eating, problem-solving, and its dieting advice. The suggestions seemed a bit out of touch with the reality of dealing with an eating disorder, veering dangerously close to reinforcing diet culture norms. It's like, we get the logic behind it, but it doesn't fully grasp the lived experience of someone battling binge eating.
Throughout our chat, we kept coming back to the need for a more empathetic, nuanced approach to treatment-one that really gets into the nitty-gritty of personal experience. It's not enough to just follow a set of instructions; dealing with binge eating is about tackling the emotional, psychological, and societal tangles that feed into it.
Wrapping up, we acknowledge Dr. Fairbairn's significant contributions to understanding binge eating disorders. Still, we're calling for a broader discussion on treatments that truly address the complexity of these issues.
