This is good to have NT Wright actually exegetes a passage rather than give his ideas. It's grounded in the words of the text. Tom Wright didn't discover this point , he adopted it from Richard Hays.

I'm inclined to believe that it's both -- like having two creation accounts, we are meant to see both meanings. After all, it is literally the faithfulness of Jesus that saves us and rescues us and brings the Kingdom of God and us into it -- Jesus acted as the perfect representative of Israel, God's chosen nation, and brought God's plan of rescue of Israel to fruition on the Cross, by being obedient, even to death on a Cross. That saving work is appropriated by faith -- trust in the Messiahship of Jesus, trust that Jesus carried out the job of the Messiah on the Cross and in rising bodily from the dead. Dr. Wright is not advocating an "either/or" position, but a balance of two possible readings. We shouldn't be surprised by this kind of complexity and richness from the Bible; Paul was a considerable talent in his own right like a Shakespeare, and the classical position is that Romans and the Pauline letters carry God's authority, on the basis of evidence that Paul was conscious of his apostolic authority; and evangelicals tend to extend 2 Tim. 3:16 to New Testament writings, although that's probably a bit of a stretch.

Belief/faith is simply being convinced something is true. Faith in Christ is being convinced that Jesus is the Christ and His promise of everlasting life for you is true. If you believe that through Jesus’ death and resurrection you will never perish and have everlasting life, you have believed the saving message and are eternally secure.

In answer to Felix I’m not sure I understood faith to be exclusively faith or faithfulness according to NT Wright’s explanation. It can mean either one as translated from the Greek “pistis,” and in context. Perhaps an example of faithfulness on our part would be found in the Fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5. I really appreciate Wright’s view of Christ’s faithfulness in these passages while maintaining our faithful response or human agency.

The covenant relies on the faithfulness of the promise of eternal life, and our faith to keep our promise to obey Christ, we the uncircumcision are justified THROUGH faith. Which is by the means of faith, which in turn is complete trust and the duty to fulfil that trust, which is how we shall live in the covenant.

@@felixmarinjr.66 Apparently from the Greek the root is the same, I think it is how a sentence is constructed why faith or faithful is used. I believe the root of faith, believe and trust is the same, so the sentence dictates the choice of word, as they mean the same. And when we say we believe, that must mean we continue to believe, and are believing. The special thing about BY or THROUGH faith is the context of each. BY is action, and THROUGH is means, or direct and indirect. The means for the uncircumcision is the covenant.

@Scott Speidel without doubt. Faith is to live justly. The just shall live by faith. Faith is belief in action. Patient continuance in well doing (or seek to be justified) according to the truth of God the Father, when we hold the truth in righteousness. Romans 1-2. The covenant of atonement came by the cross, the covenant promise is eternal life for good works. Jesus changed the sacrificial works of the Law, to the law of good works. The obedience of faith.

@@simonskinner1450 Simon I read your saying; “Patient continuance in well doing (or seek to be justified)”. This almost sounds like justification through works, yet you noted the scripture “the just (justified) shall live by faith”, as “we are saved through faith, not of ourselves, nor works” Ephesians 2:8,9. So, I don’t understand your thoughts here. Here is something I have observed about this very challenging scripture; “ Who will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life:…” Romans 3:6,7. Paul, speaking of works (well doing) speaks of it as the “ordained” type, Ephesians 2:10, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus 'unto' good works, which God has before ‘ordained’ that we should walk in them.” I once heard a preacher relate this scripture to a new pair of shoe’s, as when you get them, they come with strings! So, also with true salvation, as good works should follow, as in “unto good works”! Basically saying salvation comes with “no strings (works of our own, Ephesians 2:9) attached” but only those strings (works) ordained! So, as you well mentioned Romans 13, that Love works no ill to his neighbor: and is only accomplished by putting “… on the Lord Jesus Christ,” Romans 13:14, as He is both the “end” of the law and “beginning” of life! John speaks of this same thing in 1 John 3:10, that there is manifest difference between the two children, and it is this, “love”. Thanks

@simonskinner1450 4 года назад
@@petratical of course the text of Romans 2 is written to those baptised who hold the truth in unrighteousness. They will be judged by their deeds and not get eternal life but wrath. And of course Ephesians 2:8 it is the "grace" which is not of ourselves, grace is the gift of God the Father. Faith is conviction in action, so it is our actions in good works we are saved through. "Works" in Ephesians 2:9 are sacrificial works that were crucial in atonement in the old law. And St Paul explains through the passage of Ephesians 2:11-22 that sacrificial works have been replaced by good works. Salvation has 'strings attaced' as the mercy seat is now in heaven and we will be judged as Romans 2:16.
@petratical
@petratical 4 года назад
@@simonskinner1450 Works play no part at all in securing salvation. But afterwards Christians will 'prove' their faith by their works. Bottom line, works will follow those who are saved in Christ and have nothing to do with getting saved. Receiving salvation is by grace through faith, as faith is what save's, not works. As Jesus said in John 6:29; "This is the work of God, that you believe on him whom he has sent." Which goes along with John 3:16. A better way to say James 2:20; "faith without works is dead" is, faith without works never lived or D.O.A (dead on arrival). As James 2:18 say the same; "I will show you my faith by my works." These are the same "works" Paul was speaking of in Ephesians 2:10; the works that follow a believer, as such is ordained of God! No, works wont save, they show! James is not talking about being justified before God by works, but rather about works being evidence of our justification before God. As you well pointed out saying; “ it is the ‘grace’ which is not of ourselves, grace is the gift of God the Father”. Right, so then, "…. if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace." Romans 11:6. Therefore, “For he that is entered into his rest, he also has ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.” Hebrews 4:10,11. Here it does "not" say, let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of not doing works. No, that labor (work) here mentioned is no other than that work of God, the same work that God ceased from doing (Hebrews 4:10) as Jesus said himself, “This is the work of God, that you believe on him whom he has sent.” John 6:29 The children of Israel had this unbelief too and it kept them out of the promised land, “But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?” So we see that (bottom line) those who, because of unbelief, did not enter. Hebrews 3:17-19. Here it is being questioned as to what kept them out of the promised land (with Joshua the son of Nun), today it is the same that keeps us from the promise of eternal life (through Joshua the Son of God), as Joshua son of Nun is predecessor of Joshua Son of God and the conclusion in both case’s was; ”… they could not enter in because of unbelief.”Hebrews 3:19.

@@petratical my friend I see you mention belief and faith, and belief is to hear and obey, and faith is to believe and obey. And you do agree with good works to show faith, but not for salvation, or atonement which is the need of sacrifice. Grace is given in exchange for faith, not works, but this means not sacrificial atonement works. The old law required sacrificial works not good works, so grace is instead of sacrificial works, not instead of good works. Jesus is our propitiation, which means he is our Mercy Seat, and his blood was not taken to the Mercy Seat in the Temple. The Mercy Seat is in heaven, that is why 1 Peter 1:2 has the procedure for salvation or atonement. Sanctification, unto obedience, and afterwards sprinkling of the blood in heaven. That is why we need faith in his blood to redeem us from our past sins. The whole procedure is a technical one where the Temple was a type if Christ, and Leviticus 16 is replaced by Christ, but his judgement and Mercy Seat is in heaven. The Jews lacked obedience so they lacked belief and faith. The law is righteousness, and the obedient keep the law. Revelation 22:14 is clear and so is Romans 2:16.

Look to 4:28 for a summary. Imagine faith like a double-sided coin. One side is Jesus' trust in God's plan, and the other is our trust in Jesus. Jesus followed God's plan faithfully, even if it meant his death. This act was a special part of God's plan to save all people. Now, how does this connect to us? What does our faith look like and how do we benefit? Our faith is in God who acted through Jesus. When we believe this story - the gospel - we accept the good things that were planned for us.

Faith is "trusting God, Who justifies the ungodly". Trusting God in all He says. We are not justified by faith and faithfulness, we are justified by faith. True faith, by definition, has works, but those works do not justify. We are justified by faith alone. We are saved by grace through faith, and if you add anything to grace, it's no longer grace. If the faith that justifies has works, its no the same (grace through) faith that saves. Knowing that N.T. Wright, from what I understand, believes in conventantal nomism, making faith and faithfulness the same fits in well. Conventantal nomism is heresy.

So, Tom comes full circle. It is the faithfulness of Jesus that gives us the cross, but as Tom says regarding Rom. 3:21-23, it is our faith in what Jesus did. Now keep in mind, our faith doesn't generate within us, but is itself a gift of God (Rom 12:3), but still none-the-less is acted upon by us to make the cross' objective gift a subjective reality within us. Faith, while not itself a virtue is simply the means by which we appropriate the gift of salvation. So then we have the larger picture in which to understand Gal 2:16 which in this case is pistis, and not pisteuo.

Mr. Write took one word and translated it as faithfulness when it applied to Chris but only translated the same word as faith when it applied to us. I'm afraid this just doesn't make much sense to me, especially when I try to apply this to other passages in the scriptures. I tried substituting the concept of faithfulness for faith in Hebrews 11 - that classic chapter on faith. Well, you can do it, but It reads like I'm forcing a meaning onto this passage just for the sake of it. It's worth a try, but it just feels like a failed experiment.. It makes so much more sense when we just use the word faith (as in trust/belief) than faithfulness, as NT Wright would have it. Sorry, I'm sticking with faith IN Jesus. (Edited to add the following.) In fact, for myself, I'm absolutely sure that NT Wright is wrong. First note that Wright himself, at the beginning of his explanation, explicitly allows for both formulations: "faithfulness OF" and "faith IN". For me, he's wrong because "the faithfulness OF Jesus" covers a very narrow category compared to "faith IN Jesus". Faithfulness OF Jesus covers, self-evidently, only Jesus's faithfulness, whereas faith IN Jesus encompasses EVERYTHING about the person of Christ, which INCLUDES his faithfulness. When the Lord said to Peter, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?", as he was sinking into the water after beginning to walk on it, he is not saying, why did you doubt my faithfulness. He's fundamentally saying, I, the LORD, just gave you permission, why did you doubt ME? That's why Hebrews 11 reads forced when we try to read into it faithfulness rather than faith. It's not about one aspect of God's character, it's talking about the WHOLE of God's character. The WHOLE of God is slighted when we do not trust him.

@@psalm1197 I don't mind giving Tom Wright a fair hearing. I understand that his work on the resurrection is top notch. However, I'm really struggling, scripturally, to agree with a lot, if any, of the theology his coming up with. The elevation of the 4 gospels to some higher status within the New Testament I find no scriptural warrant for - only his say so. His rediscovery of the Kingdom of God through the lens of the first century I find, in many ways, surprising - as though nobody knew about this before he stumbled onto it. He is a historian. He should know that missionaries, in particular, have known and put this into practice for centuries. I find that Wright has, perhaps unwittingly, denigrated their enormous contribution in bringing about the Kingdom of God and elevated his theology at their expense. It's only that in recent times the church seem to have indulged itself in navel gazing instead of reaching out into the community and the world that we seem to have forgotten this and are buying into his 'rediscovery' of first century Christianity. His work on justification which, if I'm not mistaken, relies heavily on the notion of "faithfulness OF Christ" instead of "faith IN Christ", as with his take on the atonement - I want to be charitable - I find it most unsound.

Yeah it would depend on the context. Definitely don't force it. I mean we are saved by both regardless of what the writers meant in their specific writings, written to specific people, in a specific time. We are saved by Jesus faithfulness to God (and us) but we must also BE faithful to him and his words. Really not hard see in scripture but I understand some Church tradition makes it difficult to see, understand or accept. Also incidentally I think the word faith by definition in their language meant faith and faithfulness.

Ancient civilizations would not have read that passage literally though. The creation story wasn’t written to be taken literally. It was to show that we serve a God who created humans to walk beside and live in harmony with. This story was to show how radically different our God is in comparison to other gods of ancient days. gods who created humans as slaves who serve their needs. Ancient civilizations would have picked up on this metaphor because the way stories were written and told in that day was very different than ours today. Your interpretation and my interpretation are not salvation issues however, and I find it important that we remember that. To often we christians get bogged down on things that don’t matter in the grand scheme of things and let it divide us.

@@SirNunKakes With all due respect, I believe I'm right. Jesus said of the Father, "Your word is truth". There are those things in scripture that are metaphorical, but most of the scriptures are meant to be taken at face value. The parting of the Red Sea, the plagues of Egypt, Elijah's fire from heaven, Jesus resurrection and the creation of the earth in six days. If the creation story is simply metaphorical then so are the rest which would make the scriptures pretty useless, just fables with a lesson, we can get that anywhere. But, if the stories really did happen, then we see the power of God.

Then there is this third thing which is that Israel failed in being a light to the gentiles, so Jesus sent the Apostle Paul with the mystery message of the gospel of Grace and the dispensation of grace began. Yet, God has not cast off Israel. When the Body of Christ church is removed in the rapture, Daniel's 70th week will resume and God will resurrect Israel and they will be saved after much tribulation.

We have faith that the father will fulfill his promises IF we OBEY his word given by the prophets. Which is: REPENT, turn from sin, and the holy spirit will give us power to defeat the devil which is our carnal man. (This is the faithfulness OF christ in us). The holy spirit in us. It has nothing to do with believing a man died to cover all our sins. Didnt happen. Its the faithfulness OF christ. Christ is the spirit of truth which was personified as a man in the gospels.

@Scott Speidel we are not asked physically to die on the cross, but spiritually. Serve sin or serve God. Be harmless and blameless, as sin is harm which you are blamed for, then don't commit sin. Romans 13:8-10. Carnal Christians that are not "in Christ", and hold the truth in unrighteousness, are described in Romans 1:18-32. And as Romans 2:1 they condemn themselves. Ask yourself. Wright is not in line with the Reformation nor with the Letter to Diognetus [c110] which encapsulated the Reformation doctrine of imputed righteousness. You would think on reading it that it had been penned by Calvin. The same can be said of a homily by Polycarp, student of John the apostle, and Chrysostom also whose works Calvin had translated into French. Thi Wright fellow is playing a verbal shell game but we are not fooled.

The works that Paul is referring to in Romans is Jewish nationalism and Jewish possession and knowledge of the law viewed as a badge of salvation by them, it was not some legalism salvation. Paul rebuked them for proclaiming the possession and knowledge of the law as Jews and then not obeying and following the law. Paul never rebuked them for doing many good works to earn salvation, that’s a total misunderstanding of Paul’s writings, it was projected into the Bible by people who were struggling with Catholic Church in medieval times.
