When I was growing up in the 80's and 90's those things were celebrated. But over the past 30 years doctors, entrepreneurs, lawyers, engineers, and anyone who moved out of their respective communities stopped coming back to teach kids the importance of finding their place in the world. That left kids to look up to who they see on TV, movies, and videos. Also black churches were prevalent in my community in keeping kids active and off the streets. That stopped as well. We have to get it back somehow.
