Continuing my series of reviews of plant-based alternative products - today, something that purports to be a substitute for Camembert cheese.
Interestingly, this product is made in France. It's quite expensive £3.50 for 140g compared to real Camembert (which typically ranges between £1 and £2.50 for 250g)

I read an article in New Scientist recently about how this sector of 'fake', vegan alternatives is about to see massive growth in options. Milk, cheese and even eg-white for example cultured from scratch through custom cultures. These will contain the same proteins and amino-acids as the real thing; but no Animals in sight, unless you count custom yeast cultures as animal.

As a lactose intolerant person I am deeply intrigued by vegan dairy. Yes, I am aware that a lot of cheeses are very low in lactose and that there are pills you can take, but if I can avoid lactose entirely that's even better. I hope the science continues to improve. I've had some really good, almost convincing vegan cheeses, and I've had some truly abhorrent vegan cheeses.

I'm lactose intolerance too but man, does vegan cheese suck in the states. I love cheese and butter so much hopefully one day they can make cheese out of the lactose free milk they make nowadays. Pro tip. the harder and more aged a cheese is the less active lactose there is in it. I love a nice aged Irish cheddar.

There are some nasty vegan cheeses. But there are some stunning ones too, mainly nut based, especially cashew. A tiny little home based company in Joburg makes some very nice "cream" cheeses too, which are nut free. And then there is the mindblowing potato, carrot cheese sauce, recipes available on the internet, with and without cashews. This is actually one we have made ourselves, and it's amazing considering the ingredients.

That's a brand we can get on the continent too. I've only had their shredded product and their Gouda product. Both were slightly floury in texture but it wasn't bad. The taste and smell was fine. It said it would be great for pizza but it was really bad. It turned into a slime that was gunking up your mouth. Out of curiosity I then put it in a pan and let the proteins curdle like making a parmesan cracker. The parts that went crispy were bitter and the parts that didn't had a texture almost like those chewable caramel sweets. From that point on I used the rest only in cold sandwiches and it was quite nice.

I've found that fake cheese that doesn't try/pretend to be a real cheese is always better. The ones that just advertise themselves as a vegan alternative to cheese, instead of the ones that advertise themselves to totally taste like the real deal! Edit: I just want to point out that I'm not vegan or vegetarian. I enjoy exploring vegan options of things, and if it turns out a vegan alternative is more than acceptable I stick with it to try and do my part.

@cedarvasara9821
@cedarvasara9821 2 года назад
@@bigguy7353 because everything is marketed as a substitute. As vegan becomes more mainstream it will be easier to find quality products that fit certain segments of the taste pie chart but atm the vegan marketing is focused on the "fad" diet aspect, at least here in Canada. That and the fact that if something is marketed as a substitute then the marketer is expected to hit multiple checkboxes on the product. Sometimes in vegan cooking you mainly want the texture OR the taste, and you can have different substances for each but they rarely go together in the same product. My favourite vegan "cheese" is homemade in liquid form, for example, and that wouldn't fly off the shelves because it doesn't look anything like cheese thus making it harder to get an initial consumer base.
@danielleanderson6371
@danielleanderson6371 2 года назад
@@bigguy7353 Try finding something that melts like cheese but isn't cheese to use in casserole recipes. The big problem is we live in a world full of pre-existing non-vegan recipes. Being able to easily adapt these recipes to be vegan makes the whole thing more approachable than having to learn a new repertoire. I agree, though, that vegan foods taste better when they're not trying to taste like something else, like different foods can definitely fill certain cheese-based niches while still having their own character. A classic example is nutritional yeast, which tastes nothing like cheese but carries a certain savory nuttiness that makes it useful in some situations where you might use parmesan. I like it on toast with margarine. Doesn't taste like cheese toast, but it scratches the same itch.

Well it does has ferment in it so time is only going to make it softer I’d assume?

I like when people aprroach vegan products with an open mind like this :) I am not a vegan either, but I find myself buying more and more vegan products as they become available. Simply because I like them better or equally. For example, I use the same butter as you have there. I can't tell the difference (for most applications), it's cheaper than regluar butter here, and it's much better for the environment :) It is sad to see those people who have a sort of "vegan rasism" and just outright refuse to touch anything that says "vegan" on it.

I wish the "good stuff" was more mainstream - so many pizza places pick the most crap versions, when there are some really nice ones. E.g. I believe Pizza Express uses Mozzarisella, and while it's probably still a tad disappointing to an omnivore, it's so much better than the plastic-like gunk that other pizzas choose (and yet I still eat because of the convenience of takeaway/the price compared to PE...)

I think they’ve pretty much nailed the ‘generic’ processed cheese taste, and I’m perfectly happy to eat vegan mozzarella sticks and vegan cheese on a burger or American-style pizza now. The problem lies in replicating cheeses with very nuanced flavours and that associated sharpness, crunch and aftertaste of, say, an extra mature cheddar or Stilton. I think we are a long way off that.

I'm among those who developed lactose intolerance despite growing up consuming various dairy products. It can be a literal pain to deal with, as taking Lactaid and similar enzyme pills sometimes just isn't enough to combat the unfortunate side effects. There are two big things that I miss being able to eat without issue: cheese and ice cream. As such, I've been trying out various vegan substitutes and lactose-free alternatives. For the most part, I have found some products that are ALMOST there in regards to taste, some products that have the texture down but not the flavor, and some products that wind up tasting like butter despite trying to be a cheese. I'm just glad I don't have a nut allergy, else I'd be out of luck when it comes to ice cream alternatives! Don't get me wrong; sherbet is nice, but it doesn't work as well when you want a lactose-free milkshake.

I've tried it baked. Pretty good alternative. Have some Demi bagguetes baked with some chilli oil and it's class Bake for about 20 minutes on 220c and it should turn out perfect (it does leak some oil but it doesn't affect the quality)

Ppl bake camembert in the box it came in, if I'm not mistaken. Wonder how this one would bake. Mabe the 'unripeness' is there to prevent too much melting then?

Thanks for this review - a good vegan ’cheese’ option. Violife do a smoked ‘cheese’ slice, which is excellent with (vegan) burgers. Just chuck on 5 mins before end of cooking time 😀

As someone who is lactose intolerant, I struggle to find decent cheese. Easy enough if I just want a normal cheddar, the lacto-free cheese from Arla or from cathedral city are pretty good but most other things I have tried have been quite unpleasant. I will give this one a go!
