In this falconry video, I compare Aplomado falcons to Lanner falcons. These two species are not closely related, but share a surprising number of traits and habits. Lanner falcons have a rich history of use in falconry and were worshipped by the ancient Egyptians. Aplomado falcons also have a rich history of human interaction including being kept and trained by ancient Aztecs.
Both Lanner falcons and Aplomado falcons offer some great abilities as well as unique challenges when being train, which the video addresses.
Thank you to Hayley Busch for letting me film her Aplomado falcon for several of the shots in this video

I love the content. As a birder with no immediate interest in falconry, these videos are still super informative and a pleasure to watch.

I l love Lanners. Flew them for years. They can be hit or miss as you describe but maybe that is their attraction. Have a pair that enjoy being together. Find they are able to fly well in wide open spaces. They also like hedgerows to hunt. So your video is spot on.

They’re all stunning but that White breasted Sahara locality Lanner looks absolutely incredible. I didn’t even know they existed until now. Great stuff as always Ben. Very informative.

Yes it’s called the Erlangerii. They really are striking looking.

@@benwoodrufffalconry they are indeed. I don’t even do falconry and it’s extremely unlikely I ever will but I’ve loved birds of prey since I was a young boy and I’ve learned LOADS about all different birds of prey a lot of which I didn’t even know existed. I thought I knew a fair bit about peregrines untill I started watching this channel. I was like “wait wait wait! Theres more than one type of peregrine?…🤯 mind blown!” Also I’m enjoying the shorts you’ve started to do. Keep up the great work Ben and I really mean that.

I'm working with my first Aplomado right now. Got her in November and just finished up the season. She was chambered and purchased by another falconer and I got her at the beginning of her second season. This is the only falcon I've worked with other than a couple of kestrels. She's almost the perfect falcon, in my opinion. She's a lot like a HH in that she has a bit of a wider weight range that she'll fly at and can be trusted to get her back. But actually getting her down to business takes more weight control. She's incredibly gamey but really doesn't like to be restrained on the glove. She prefers to hunt from perches while I flush below. The calling her over and then flushing bush sparrows like you mentioned is the most effective hunting strategy I've found with her. I'm having a blast and she's very easy to work with, but doesn't hood for crap, lol!

I wouldn't exactly say that a Lanner is buoyant but it is energetic, it just wants to get up and go. It has much broader wings than a peregrine but not as much as a kestrel. It does not dive after prey like the peregrine does but it is built for level flight close to the ground and those broad wings help make it more efficient at this which is reminiscent of a steppe eagle. However when it flies low it is reminiscent of a sparrowhawk, a goshawk, a hobby.

You should do a comparison between Eurasian Goshawk and Ferruginous Eagle/Hawk (Biggest of their kind) and maybe Lanner Falcon and Ferruginous Eagle/Hawk(Frequently questioned).

I've seen some videos of Aplomados where they show huge tenacity to chase, reminded me of a Goshawk, but not so hair-triggered...

The only lanner I’ve worked with is the most food driven bird I’ve worked with. Can feed him as much as you want but he sees a lure he’ll go insane. Kind of took that as all lanners but I guess not. Nice video Ben.

You should do a video on sparrowhawks (european/asian sparrowhawks) unless if you have done a video on it already.

Hey Ben, Again great job, keep up the good work. Im getting a imprint 5 month old aplomodo, talked to you a week or 2 ago about some tips. Was wondering about telemetry. I wanted to get a Marshall gps for the tail. They have been using a micro leg mount. Her flying weight is 320grams. Would it be to heavyFor the tail or leg, its says transmitter weight is 9 grams. Should i stick with a leg mount gps or go with a micro transmitter system like the one they have already been using.I know of the back pack option but i have no idea how difficult that would be to get on her. What do you think. Thanks again Adam

Great video Ben! Would love to hear your opinion on Forest Falcons. Very accipiter like. Have they been used in falconry?

In my opinion, forest falcons have incredible potential for use as falconry birds. I have never had the good fortune to work with any first hand. Online I have seen random pics over the years of different forest falcon species sporting jesses and leashes and perched on bow perches. So I am sure some people have worked with them. But I have been unable to find any writing on the subject directly.
