Video requests: I'd kind of like to see how you all fertilize in the winter/early spring. Do you pick up the previous year's mulch layer, or apply fertilizer directly to the old mulch before putting down a new layer (counting on the old stuff to break down faster once covered). Also, I didn't see a follow up this year on the structuring of your espaliered pomegranates. I'd very much like to see how that turns out. Many thanks to the entire team at DWN for these wonderful and highly informative videos. They have been an inspiration to my gardening over the last few years, and I've really gotten to know my local nursery-men/women as a result. Keep up the great work!!!

This really encouraged me to go buy and plant 2 peach trees. Got Red Heaven's as I'm in the deep south and from what I was told do well. I'm excited iv already planted one and will plant the second one in about 2 hours when it gets to 60 degrees. Just thought I would thank you. I like the dwarfing idea and I'm looking forward to going that route. I'm 24 so I'll have many years to care for the tree as this is my family's land 10+acres. My only concern was when I woke up cold I checked the weather forecast and there's a 80% chance of rain for the next 6 days. Iv heard peaches don't like being soaked more then 48 hours but I'm hoping since its has no foliage it will be to busy working on developing roots to drowned. Contemplating throwing the second tree on the back porch for the next week tho.

clinton fisher What the tree likes and needs can sometime be in conflict with what nature and weather provides. Considering 8 potential days of rain I would recommend holding off on the second planting. Also, considering this may be a semi normal weather pattern. Make sure when planting your trees you plant on a rise of 8" to 12" above natural grade. You do not want the excess water to stagnate and cause an anaerobic condition. This will cause a root rot and eventual demise of your trees. Also when choosing grafted fruit trees, make sure they are on a rootstock that will do well with wet feet.

When pruning do you cut a horizontal cut or a slanted cut?
@DaveWilsonTrees

It doesn’t seem to matter, but we prefer a horizontal cut.

Hi Tom! Awesome videos. I just discovered them and feel like I hit the jackpot. Wish I had found them a few months ago. I planted 17 fruit trees in my yard this spring, hard cut to knee height. Unfortunately I didn't know I should do a summer prune to get a vigorous response to the cuts and now am in end of October with some scraggly trees not knowing when to prune next. Live on OR/WA border so no frost yet. Can you help? Saplings were small when planted (1/4"?). Some look lovely but apples and euro pears look the most scraggly. Apples at least have lots of branches but euro pears have essentially one upright branch. Should I winter prune that back down to desired height? So now? Or wait till summer and hope that they won't just grown one branch straight up again??

Dave Watson Wait until full dormancy has set in to winter prune. Cut back to achieve a scaffold structure. So each tree cut back to 3 to 6 scaffold branches off of the main trunk. Look for balance, so structure is evenly spaced around the trunk. Cut these scaffolds back to 12" to 18" off the main trunk. Cut to an outward growing bud. Any trees with less than three scaffold initiations should be cut back to 6" above last season's cut to begin to re-establish new scaffold. So basically you are using first year summer pruning philosophy for second year winter pruning. Second season summer pruning will help to achieve final fruiting structure. Hope this helps

Is it necessary to remove fruit on the ground that has been there since thinning in spring/early summer as well?
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 3 года назад
Not always necessary to remove the thinned fruit. But it is a good idea to pick up ripe fruit that drops.

I got seven DW trees with Armstrong preorder last year, the wonderful and eversweet were dead on pickup. The granny Smith and May Pride had root rot did not make it, The Fugi, Red Baron and Hachiya are alive and growing. I'm not sure when is the best time to exchange them at Armstrong as they will have their 50-90% of fruit tree clearance soon and I don't want any of clearance trees as my replacement. Suggestions?

Armstrong pre-ordered all new trees as replacements for me.

how do you keep the birds from devouring all of that fruit?
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 9 лет назад
dwr44 We have a lot of fruit around here for the birds, don't see much damage from them. You can try bird nets, one good reason to keep your tree small. Sun reflectors, like used CD's might help. No great way to stop them.

I have a 3-year-old parfianca and it's very bushy and 6 feet tall and it receiving plenty of sunlight and water but it does not give any fruit, can you give me some tips for growing trees
@DaveWilsonTrees
@DaveWilsonTrees 7 лет назад
Armando Meza how much water exactly? Pomegranates don't need a lot. If it gets watered more often than every 10 days, you may be over doing it.

I wouldn't recommend it without mixing 50-50 with some other type mulch.

You mic is clearly very good as you get precise, clean sound. However, the clarity of your mic makes the sound of your munching somewhat offputting. You may want to be more mindful of the effect of hearing someone eating on your audience.
