Norm's story/sub plot definitely felt more interesting. I don't know if it's because I binged it or not but I had a real issue with main characters tripping over each other in their travels, it felt a little too convenient. I loved seeing the internal workings of power armor put on screen even if the threat they posed fluctuated for story reasons it was still reasonably well done. Maximus was really hit or miss, I understand him having conflicting emotions with everything in his past and what was currently happening but he just didn't seem like he was in the brotherhood that long with the way he acted, some times the actor had some great facial range, other times it's as if he had nothing to work with in the script. Casting was pretty good, I would love to see more Mr.Handys voiced by Matt Berry in season 2. I did find it funny that Cooper, played by Walton Goggins, in his ghoul makeup was a dead ringer for Jeffrey Donovan from Burn Notice.
@guyjperson
@guyjperson 5 месяцев назад
I think Norm's adventure was the most compelling as well. There were answers to be had just a vault door away. But some of the most inexplicable things happened in his thread. I wrote several questions about it, just now, but deleted 'em for, y'know, spoilers.
@pyxeeful
@pyxeeful 5 месяцев назад
I enjoyed the entire thing more or less, but I found the Vault subplot the most compelling as well. I think the biggest reason was the feeling of actual tension and stakes. Up top any situation can flip on its head in a second. Any character can show up anywhere, and the slap stick is high. The vault isn't immune to this, but it's played more surreal and creepy. The characters are able to stick with the tone and the build up that results works well.

I know this sounds maybe a little naive, but I think Writing comedy is incredibly difficult, way harder to do than drama. An audience embracing the drama of a show like this is always going to be more successful than the comedy of it all. Comedy, writing jokes and gags can often fall flat if they're shoehorned in, I feel like adding the truly funny bits and gags would be more sucessful than just peppering the show.
@aytony4090

The "You want me to use my cock?" bit was painfully bad and this type of joke comes up often. Dude is taking about being naive about how ejaculation works when there was a guy cranking it in the bunk next to him at the start drawing no attention from anyone. The show does land some funny moments mind you, but so much feels forced and the characters are inconsistent. Titus for example somehow makes it to being a knight despite being a dumbass who gets killed deviating from his mission (which by pure coincidence leads them to the target). Meh.

I appreciated the fact that they kept the video game logic intact and didn’t attempt to ground Fallout in reality. Characters in a Fallout game and/or TV show should be able to take bullets and use a stimpak to heal up. One point about the wonky gags that can't transfer at all from computer game to TV show is that the games often let you choose how, if at all, you want to interact with the more goofy stuff. Bethesda's Fallout is not post apocalyptic. It is just apocalyptic. They have zero interest in the actual themes of the fallout games. Just the aesthetics. This is why New Vegas will always be the best one. The people felt like they were truly alive, had actual ideas and philosophies that made sense in context.
@tite93
@tite93 5 месяцев назад
Die-hard New Vegas fans truly take the enjoyment out of everything that's not actually NV. As if NV didn't mostly have fun with the aesthetic of the apocalypse and all the moral dilemmas there boil down to a grey flawed faction being opposed by actual evil (mostly due to Caesar interpreting Hegel in such a way that would make a undergrad philosophy student swallow a riot shotgun) with an ayn-randian figure and anarchy being other options. It's not that deep when you think about it for more than a few minutes. And it certainly doesn't diminish Fallout 1 and 2, which were both silly and colorful as hell.
@TakeMeOffYourMailingList
@TakeMeOffYourMailingList 5 месяцев назад
It feels like there's a lot a lot of bad-faith arguing here, but the pre-war civilisation in 1 and 2 (and to a lesser extent NV) wasn't all that important to the setting of the game. It was about how humanity rebuilds after it. In Fallout 2 you see new buildings in new cities (NCR and Vault City to name two), new societies being formed and new technology being created. To me, the key thing Bethesda focussed on, to the detriment of the story, was interrogating the pre-war world. Why does every terminal have a pre-war journal on it? Has nothing happened in the past 200 years? Fallout 4 is especially bad for that; power armour and fusion cores are pretty much key to survival in this world yet you're telling me there are power armour frames and cores littered about the wasteland, untouched for 200 years? That said, 4 is decently-fun action/crafting game and one of the only full-length VR games available.

I would say it seemed most influenced by the Bethesda games rather than the original 2 Interplay games. More specifically Fallout 4. The Bethesda games are great but they have always been 'someone else's interpretation' of the original source material to me. Bethesda massively overplayed the 1950s theme IMO. There was all of a sudden this Jazz music, military music, brass instrumentation everywhere. The world of the original 2 games was much more alien and strange. Checkout how different the F2 soundtrack is ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Rl59KOraG3c.htmlsi=gBsN6asqxpUutxbx. Considering the TV show is therefore an interpretation of another interpretation, it did have some issues for me (that I already find with the 3D games) but overall I think the team did an amazing job recreating the Bethesda-style fallout. I did really enjoy the show and I hope they are successful and make more.

@@theolynch8155 The Brotherhood WAS destroyed down to a handful of survivors in the events preceding New Vegas. The difference is that New Vegas took pains to explain the exact how and why of the faction being so badly crippled, with the attempt to keep the NCR from taking the Helios Station in direct warfare. The very reason the NCR trounced the Brotherhood in that battle was for the same reason it is unfeasible for the NCR to have collapsed as described in the show: the NCR is expansive and holds immense territory with inexhaustible amounts of soldiers while the Brotherhood is extremely insular and elitest. I really wanted to like this adaptation, but the writing and tone were just so inconsistent. I didn't like most of the people we were supposed to care about, and it had the most contrived and hackneyed "romance" ever. I mean were we supposed to care what happens to Maxiumus? I sure didn't. I hated that character. The characters in general don't act with much logic, and for people having lived in this reality their whole lives are somehow ignorant to how it operates. For instance, how does Maximus not know squat about the armor, when that's all he ever wanted, and the chubby guy knew everything about it, despite being coded as inept? It just opened a lot questions and not the good kind. This show just wanted to eat its cake and have it too. The effects were neat though, and Wally Goggins gives an amazing performance (as usual).

I haven finished the show and it likely have its mistakes and lore retcons but the armor bit makes sense. I havent seen the chubby guy yet but maximus order (The Brotherhood of Steel) is very secretive and careful with what they know of the technology they praise, even more so with firepower like the power armors and flying vehicles- it sounds very very Brotherhood of Steel to not teach or train mere squires in what are their most valuable treasures... meanwhile in the games universe having enough repair skill would likely deduce what to do with a power armor, on Fallout 1 that was one of the ways of getting one (fixing it)... so maybe the chubby guy is a better engineer/tinkerer But of course its a flaw of the show not making things like these clear.

I want to watch it, but I'm really.. I don't trust modern writers to write characters with the proper vibe of the 50's gone wrong. I know that is kind of stupid, because even in game that doesn't really hold up most of the time, but I've really lost just about any goodwill I have in modern writers.
@olwiz
@olwiz 5 месяцев назад
Well Fallout originally wasnt just '50s gone wrong', bethesda turned fallout way more 50s feeling, but its the future- retro future (future like they couldve imagined back then). In the first 2 games it felt more like the past and things like propaganda and suburbs being very 50s, but the actual wasteland isnt 50s, at most some post-modern 60s-70s grim dirty apocalipse (also with 80s undertones given the mad max inspiration). Even inside the vaults where generations have gone isolated the vibes were more bleak then a bunch of people with the american dream. If anything i wanted the show to feel less 50s gone wrong then it does, but it takes more after the bethesda games so its there and Vault 33 is overly optimistic to my taste.

It just felt a little too woke at times. While not outright leaning into it there were a few moments that were very contradictory. The black guy gets shoved away when he wants to enter the shelter (oh my I wonder what they want to convey with this?) but nobody bats an eye at the mixed race couple and their daughter? People with 1950s sensibilities in the one scene and in the next the typical current day Californians the next. Very inconsistent. And the only one who can more or less act is the Ghoul.

@@theolynch8155 Given the fact that he let's the other guy in but not specifically the black guy and given Hollywood's track record I would say they are definitely going for the racism angle. But even if you ifnored that... These are people supposed to be the essence of the 50s when Jim Crow was still a thing. Having made myself experinces with racism well into the 2000s I would say having a black wife and mixed race daughter would at least draw some weird looks. You don't need to include some racist remarks I get that sometimes you don't want to be too overt but a little bit more realistic (real racism is often silent) but the series doesn't address that at all. I mean sure there were surely more progressive people back then too. Reality isn't how it is depicted in movies after all. But I would bet my ass that it would at least draw weird looks. No was this is not going to be referred to at all.

I'm a bit put off by the amount of lens flare and how photogenic everyone is. I feel like it's fair to say that the games aren't exactly great from a visual standpoint, but I believe the idea that the uncanny looking goggle eyed freaks from the games are living in the post apocalypse much more than the jarringly beautiful people who are featured in the show. The protagonist is meant to have lived in a hole with no natural light for her entire life, with the only clothing available being a blue jumpsuit with a number on it, but her hair and makeup are impeccable. Where are they manufacturing cosmetic products? Do they have a stockpile of the stuff large enough to keep people going for two centuries? It's such a weird stylistic choice for a setting that begs for something grungier.

The Fallout show, like its tone is a mixed bag. While some parts are thoroughly enjoyable others are puzzling or baffling. A total roller coaster of quality. Luckily it did seem to find its footing a little towards the second half. I think the early episodes were some of the weakest as you could tell they struggled with finding the tonality. It has potential though as I felt like once the show started to find itself the episodes got better. I hope they can build off that for the next season and don’t regress to the flat and frustrating elements of the early episodes.

I will throw a guess here that you only played the Bethesda Fallouts. Was i correct? Fallout 1 and 2 are both full of humor (2 even more so, but near half of it is explicity non-canon like the easter eggs) but 9 out of 10 darker and incidental humour surrounded by very serious ambience (even in the music). Dramatic moments were downplayed and more infered because of tech- no voice acting for most dialogue, its hard to make elaborate scenes/moments looking so far away and the few npcs with closeup heads cant really interact with other npcs like in a cutscene... my point is fallout 1-2 had their wackiness and insane moments but were more dense and the humor wasnt quite the bethesdas tone. It feels like bethesda applied the type of jokes/humor from the Pip-boy in the menus as the kind of humor for the whole world... only pipboy would ever appear holding or throwing a nuke yet in bethesda land they made a handgun nuke launcher canon... Original Fallout used that kind of humor and drawings like the vault and pip boy to CONTRAST with the bleak world and just some of the npcs were funny crazy wackos while in bethesda theyre like 80% of the population... All that just to say why i didnt feel the same way- if anything i was very glad the show wasnt just wacky comedy - heck i wanted a bit more sobriety btw, a slim hope the show would take some more from the 2 first titles

I'm glad to see it wasn't a total flop in your eyes. I'm not surprised the humor was played up. It was very dark and limited in the first 2 games, then the over the top humor was limited to Easter eggs. I suppose they had to lighten it up for a more general audience. I guess the market segment of serious post apocalyptic scenarios is currently taken up by mad max (which could make a good series if they wanted actually).

With the current state of the series I see no reason why the NCR would be destroyed, even if their capital got nuked - I hope they will expand on this seeing that apparently Mojave regions were also affected. Also I do not buy the goofy BoS depiction, it seems many are idiots and cowards, and apparently do not know they have a f*king flashlight on their helmet in case lights go out.

Also, Ella just breezing through everything with plot power armor is kind of lame.
