Haha! Akela was trying to get those waves! I'll be motorcycle camping at Kerr Lake State Recreation Area this coming weekend. That permethrin is good stuff. I usually treat my boots, hiking clothes and sometimes my tent with it. Travel safe!
@GoingNoWhereFast
@GoingNoWhereFast 3 года назад
I'd be a little worried it would effect your tents water proofing, but I guess if you have a good fly, it wouldn't matter. Unlike DEET it doesn't eat synthetics and plastics!

Hi Rick and Alekla. I have never seen pollen like that here in Australia.Maybe it's because it's much dryer here. Watch out for ticks . I give my dog one Broivucto tablet from the Vet's once a month. Which does the trick on a tick. And I use a Ticksafe pendant from the pharmacy which lasts for ages, is battery operated and costs $50.00AUD. Always good to check your furry pal and yourself over after a hike as a precaution. Happy trails, Polly.

Thanks Polly, good information. it was a thick pine forest and they were so happy to have 70deg F days. So they were dumping pollen everywhere. Its just the season ans the down side of living where it is so green most of the time !

Just spent the afternoon pwr washing the pollen off my Chalet A-frame and Tacoma. Really thick here (WA ST) too. Heading to eastern WA next week so pollen won't be as bad. But the ticks will be everywhere. Guess you can't win. Thanks for sharing your trips back east. Will try to make it back there in the next yr or two. Been awhile since I've been home to upstate NY so a long road trip with the Chalet is in the works.

Hi Rick, would you consider having a camping Meet Up next Fall... possibly near the Blue Ridge Parkway? Would be fun to swap tips and tricks, hike, etc... I wasn't able to get to the Aliner rally near me this Spring. BTW, I am not a fan of the new state parks reservation system. Seems like it cost 30% more after they tacked on all of their fees.
@GoingNoWhereFast
@GoingNoWhereFast 3 года назад
Ya, they definitely started charging you for what you use. But if your equipped, it still $20 for a senior. That's not bad. Ya, if the campgrounds every get less crowded, I'd love to do a meet up. Right now I haven't found anyplace that isn't fully booked through July. You name a place and I'll meet you there !

I learned of it when I traveled to the Congo a few years ago. Sprayed all my clothes as prevention from mosquitoes(yellow fever area). Now I sprayed on my screen room as well as clothes.
@GoingNoWhereFast
@GoingNoWhereFast 3 года назад
I've heard you can buy it by the gallon 30% concentration and just add it to water to get the 3% solution and then rinse your cloths and gear in it and hang them to dry and it works great and is much cheaper. And the left over can be put in the spray bottle for other uses.

Hi, Rick! Just got back from a camping trip to Hester's Ferry Campground on the shore of Strom Thurmond lake in Georgia right next to South Carolina. Pollen was ridiculous there too. But it was a very nice, quiet, wooded campground. Had a spot lakeside too. Liked watching Akela trying to bite the waves. Funny watching the ending of your video where the camera was focused in on the pollen rather than you. The pollen down here is absolutely out of control. I'm going to have to power wash my whole house to get rid of it all once the pines stop having their sex orgies. Anyway, still love your vids and keep 'em coming.

Permithirins seem to be the best answer to the problem. We use it on our "hiking Cloths" and haven't seem any ticks. DIdn't get it applied this year for this trip though!!

Sounds like a nice idea. Yes, visited my daughter in Atlanta and yes, that yellow pollen!!! Yikes! Glad to hear that the premetherine works because the ticks are really bad this year. Have been out looking for morel mushrooms and 4 ticks were on me within 5 minutes. I will definately try that tick/mosquito repellent out. I've been thinking about getting an A Frame type camper. Have been wondering about the condensation issue on them. Any suggestions? Or can you do a video about the pros and cons of the A -Liner?
@GoingNoWhereFast
@GoingNoWhereFast 3 года назад
I've got a "Why buy an Aliner" video coming, but probably not until Mid May. Humidity in any camper is an issue. A/C takes care of it very well in the Aliner. When its really cold outside a small electric heater helps a lot. But you may know, I had me and 2 wet German shepherds in mine for many a cold night and it dripped off the aluminum framing no matter what. But it was never a bother, just an observation.

Southern Yellow Pines....I think they call them yellow because of all the yellow Pollen!!

That was a big tick! It didn’t look like a Deer tick, which is common here. Unfortunately me and the pets seem to be tick magnets too! They are awful in my yard but can’t treat as I also have honeybees! I guess I should get chickens again and maybe add some guinea hens too!)
@GoingNoWhereFast
@GoingNoWhereFast 3 года назад
What you really need to add are snakes, hawks and owls. And Mow frequently. The early stages are very dependent on mice and squirrels and birds.
@Abeaness
@Abeaness 3 года назад
We have all the above (snakes, hawks including red tails), vultures, great horned owls, turkeys, tons of song birds & also occasionally bald eagles too - but we also have lots of rodents (mice, voles, squirrels Gray and red, flying; chipmunks, groundhogs) white tailed deer, coyotes, foxes, bears- plus we mow frequently too! We are on the edge of suburbia and decreasing green space due to development/ subdivision pressures - so we have all the wildlife squeezed into the little green spaces remaining. :(
@GoingNoWhereFast
@GoingNoWhereFast 3 года назад
I repeat my prior warning, There are too many people on this tiny little rock. Sad to say, but we need to stop consuming and populating every square inch. Mother nature will probably find a way to fix it. Eventually.

We have a friend that had a tick behind his ear, he didn't notice it for the longest time, my husband looked at it, and yanked it off, it was huge, and white, so you know, full. So gross. That was over 40 years ago 😳.

I high school classmate of mine that suddenly had some serious paralysis of her legs, that moved into her upper body over a week or so, and they thought it was a brain tumor. During the MRI of her head the nurse saw a tick behind her ear and removed it and she got better in about 10 hours. They suspect it somehow anesthetized her vagus nerve???? Very Strange... Evil little buggers!

@@GoingNoWhereFast was it the deer tick? We just really started getting them in the not too distant past. Maybe that's why he didn't get sick? I'm sorry about your classmate, glad she recovered quickly.
@GoingNoWhereFast
@GoingNoWhereFast 3 года назад
All the ticks will bite people. Deer tick is a poor name, since they bite more mice and squirrels than anything. An while the Black Legged Tick (Deer Tick) carries 5 different diseases, they tend to need to be on for over 24 hrs and only grow to be about the size of a small bean, while some of the other ticks, like the dog tick grows to be as big as a grape. And of course Larva are minute... I need to get my Tick Video out...
