Fallschirmjäger vs. 101st Airborne in Normandy.
In Normandy, the Fallschirmjäger would go head to head with their equals - the 101st Airborne.
After the successful capture of the La Barquette Lock on D-Day, Colonel Johnson and his men from the 501st PIR of the 101st Airborne, would be instrumental in weakening the Fallschirmjäger in the Carentan area.
In the afternoon of June 7th, his forward outposts reported a large number of unknown troops heading their way. It soon became apparent they were Fallschirmjäger, so Johnson rallied his men and lay in wait for them.
The carnage wrought upon the Fallschirmjäger would lead to the area becoming known as 'Hell's Corner' by the men who fought there and for the Germans it would see the destruction of the 1st Battalion of the 6th Fallschirmjäger Regiment!

@@WW2Wayfinder yes, my mother had 4 brother's who served, i remember some of there tales. Yes, it feels like it's slipping away...what we owe them. But thats a bit of a biggie.

I have long wondered where my great uncle 2nd lt Carl Hoobing lost his life. Your mention of the Quincey answered that question. Unfortunately one of their shells landed on him there is a pretty graphic account of his death. I'm going to be 60 this year and thanks to your video I'll have a point of reference. Thanks Mike

When I searched up Hells Corner I was expecting the place outside Caen where the Canadians got stuck at. This was cool too.

I know where you mean! This was a very local name given by the 501st PIR to what happened there that stuck, especially post war with describing the events that day. Thank you for watching!

La Wehrmacht a été vaincue à Stalingrad et non en Normandie ! Vaincus par l'Armée rouge sur les Ardennes de Koursk et à Stalingrad, ainsi qu'en Allemagne et en France, les nazis n'ont pas particulièrement résisté et se sont rendus en divisions ! Les Alliés attendirent jusqu'en 1944 quel camp aurait le dessus ! Si Hitler avait gagné à Stalingrad, la Grande-Bretagne aurait fait la paix avec lui ! Ce serait une honte pour la Bretagne !

Good stuff, mate. The Krauts should have used the Green Devils way more on the East Front at least (obviously without air superiority on the west it was difficult but should’ve been tried more there as well) they got the wrong message from Crete and expended ‘em in holding static line combat in which they were utterly wasted. Cheers

Couldn’t agree more. They were amazing fighters but used in completely the wrong way. Crete is on the list for one day as that operation has always amazed me, how it was such a balls up but ultimately they won the day!

Thanks mate! I always wanted to visit Stalingrad but I guess that won’t happen for very long time of ever now. The Eastern front stuff is definitely an area I need to do way more reading on when I get the chance!

I suspect at this point in the war , the Germans needed quality infantry troupes to bolster the defenses , as 75 % of their strength was in the east , got to use what you have on hand .

La Fiere is a great place to visit and has one of the best memorials in Normandy (in my opinion) there. And the other side of the causeway at Cauquigny also has some great memorials and information boards explaining the battle that took place there, plus the church railings have a bullet lodged in them!

Staying in Carentan now. I think we’ll head up there today. Maybe La Barquette lock as well. Trying to stay out of the other main cities as it’s kind of nuts. Lesson learned - don’t come early June, anniversary year or not!

@@WW2Wayfinder Ah. Great afternoon! Hoping my rambling will help others as well. Basically, if you go the opposite of the crowds(parades) and museums - going to Holdy, Viereville, Angoville, Brecourt Manor, etc. - it’s not bad. Actually, things move smoothly except the lockdowns during ceremonies/parades. Shockingly, though many cars parked at the trail, there was not a soul anywhere near Hell’s Corner. We passed the lock of course. Appreciate all the great info your videos provide. It’s truly bizarre to point and drive and hit about any destination in 5-15min.

Hard to say, I think they were taken by such surprise there wasn’t really any other way to respond. Quite incredible though given they knew the invasion had happened and the area was swarming with Allied soldiers!
