With the release of the 3DS in Japan, we take a look at Nintendo's first attempt at 3D gaming almost 25 years ago. (Hint: it's NOT the Virtual Boy!)
SeanOrange and Vinnk review the Famicom 3D System, the seven games that came out for it, and the ones that made it to the US and somehow managed to stay 3D.

The cool thing now is that on the New 3DS you can go on youtube(through your browser and not the app) and look at those games in 3D and experience their 3D.

I actually enjoyed the simplicity of this video, obvious green screen effect and somewhat tasteless humor. I have not been enjoying how EVERYONE does things professionally lately so, oh no offense by the way, it was nice to see something like this. It felt like a home movie and made me feel nostalgic about some old games, too. I imagine four years later you guys do things professionally now, but I did enjoy this video a lot. And, until today, I was not aware that Nintendo had another 3D system before the 3DS came out. I own a Virtual Boy myself and it does have a good selection of games, though only in the small minority. My favorite 3D anything would be the Oculus Rift as I had never seen anything that way before. Though these days, mine just gathers dust; exactly as I anticipated it would. It was such an unforgettable experience though. I truly felt like I was in the game. The 3DS is definitely second best in my book, though. Keep up the good videos!

I have a Famicom 3D system that I bought at a video game convention along with a few of the games that are compatible. The goggles are pretty comfortable and looked epic testing 3D hot rally.

I just recently found out about the Original 3Ds (dont worry it'll catch on) on Ask Iwata. I'm amazed that flicker 3D is that old. i was amazed when we had a field trip to the Imax and they explained why we didn't need the old red and blue glasses. can't wait for the next video. On ask iwata, Miyamoto san said that Yokoi san meant for the virtual boy to be a stand alone toy that wasn't meant to be related to the gameboy or portable. I wonder if it would sold better in that form.

@therealhardrock Or anyone who played it at a friend's house, or rented it, or DID get it second-hand. When we do this stuff, we can't assume that everyone paid attention to every little detail of a game. Heck, that's why we do this show, to amass those details in a surprising perspective, or put into a new light details we all thought we understood.

Which item is more difficult to find; the Virtual Boy, or the Famicom 3D accessories/accessory (with all parts included)?

3D shutter glasses. Same technology used with 3D TVs today, only with some tweaks made to match the refresh rate and resolution of modern TVs. See, we can still make old technology work for us!

@SeanOrange Speaking of things missing when buying loose cartridges, do you know about the game "Star Tropics" and its Immersive letter? I had the number "747" on it which you need to complete the game, and is a real problem for people who only have loose cartridges of it.

@Krosserdog LOL yeah. I was recording these segments at around 1:00am while my wife and daughter were sleeping so I had to be quite so as not to wake them. So which is better? High strung kinda near-shouting Vinnk, or mellow, clear talking but perhaps a bit boring Vinnk? Probably somewhere in the middle.

That is true, however: a) we lacked the ability to split the signal like that, and more importantly b) this feature was not yet available on RU-vid when the episode was posted.

@Billy2600 Don't give up just yet. Try turning your glasses upside-down so that the red and blue are on different eyes than before. I noticed that the red/blue effect is actually backwards on these games compared to most things (like RU-vid) that use the glasses. Also, make sure you're using an old CRT TV; the effect doesn't work very well on HDTVs, flatscreens, etc.

I wonder if you'll ever talk about the Satellaview, that was a weird way of playing games. I remember seeing an article in the Nintendo Power's epic center called "Zelda from Space?" Only being able to play games during a live broadcast meant that you were required to wrap your life around video games even more than Animal Crossing.

@chaofreak8 Well, we didn't forget to cover it so much as didn't mention it. We didn't have one, and the only difference between it and the regular one is that it doesn't say "Nintendo" on it anywhere. Then again, neither does the Twin itself.

Hey, you guys should do an episode for the VRC7 sound chip used in the game Lagrange Point. But as I think of it now...it would be a very short episode. Seeing how that was the only game using it. But it'd still be pretty cool!

On the screen; the glasses only have the job of blocking certain frames so that each eye sees something different from the TV.

5:26: Actually it IS possible to see the 3D effect on an Internet video. People have posted footage of these games by displaying both frames "side by side" which RU-vid can already convert into a wide variety of formats (even good old red/cyan anaglyph which other NES games used such as Rad Racer).

@MisoCrazyCup It might have been possible, but it looks like the other worldwide releases happened as planned. The only delayed releases were for specific game titles (on all platforms), but that was due to content (similar disasters, etc), not supply chain problems.

@SeanOrange Anyone who actually bought the game back in the day when it was new, boxed, and on a shelf. Collectors are so used to buying used copies without the box or manual that they tend to forget what it was like to buy new boxed copies. I saw the game box in Hastings (a rental place) when I was a kid.

@nintendobard The NES Power Glove won't work, but a company called Pax made one for the Famicom. (The one I used in the video was for the NES, but it's largely identical.) What, you don't like the Angry PC Engine Nerd? Awww... There is certainly much more NEC to cover, but I think we'll only talk about the CD system for the rest of Season 2 -- the PC-FX is technically 32-bit.

@therealhardrock Hmm, interesting! For instance, I was playing the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Infocom game on my iPhone, and didn't have access to any of the footnotes. That didn't stop me from playing the game, but I do know some other titles that would require access to the manual as a theft-deterrent. Not too great for collectors, but I doubt they were worried about how things would be 20 years from then when the game was no longer being sold, and the technology outdated.

Rad Racer's "secret" feature wasn't secret, the 3D was advertised on the box.

@JASPEN5964Lila11 I actually tried one for the first time this week. It's actually a pretty good effect! I didn't realize there were several points along the Z axis where you could still see the effect, whether it's up close or farther away. But tilting the screen too much to the side takes you right out of it. So it's not perfect, but it's the only widespread implementation that doesn't require glasses for anyone to use -- BUT it's still a single-user device.

Because of this video, I bought 3D World Runner and Rad Racer as soon as I saw them at the local flea market. Dug up my old red/blue 3D glasses and... turns out 3D doesn't work for me. =(
