The reason they went with Sharp to make the Twin Famicom was because Nintendo had a strong relationship with Sharp, they provided a lot of materials for Nintendo, like the screens for the 3DS, and much more. They even made a television with an NES built in, but that didn't last.

The Famicom and NES have mono audio. Note how there are only 2 AV connectors. Only one connector is for sound and the other is for video. They'd have to duplicate the captured audio in editing if you wanted to hear it in both channels.
@SeanOrange
@SeanOrange 9 лет назад
Yeah, we learned after this video to handle that better: both to spread the audio to both speakers if the source was mono, but also to capture it in stereo (via a splitter) in the first place. I believe we fixed this for the Season 1 DVD.

+That's Orange Both the famicom and NES, while it has the white whose has the left audio channels, the actually use the right one, which is red channels, white is also used on the Famicom Titler. It's the only one supporting S-video. It's rare and That and the Familones are the famicom models left.

Dude, I remember watching this series (specifically this episode) many years ago when I was a young lad, probably below the age of ten. Today at work I watched a video relating to the NES earlier today and this channel popped into my head and I knew I had to go check, and it's excellent to see Famicom Dojo is still uploading today! Keep up the good work mate

We have access to a (non-working?) NES variety. It's also missing the very unique controllers that came with it, but they're standard ports.
@nakamanga5412

In fact, Sharp have the rights for the word "Famicom" even before the Famicom console was released or exist, because they make a product (i think it's a microwave) that was called shortly like Famicom. That's the reason why Nintendo never called Famicom in any advertising or commercial for their products or games, just Family Computer.

That cable on expansion ports C and D actually links the Famicom Disk System's RAM cartridge hardware (which is on the back part of the motherboard) with the disk drive. Removing the cable will make the Twin Famicom think there's a disk in the console, then give a battery error. Expansion port C links straight to the RAM cartridge hardware while expansion port D links to the disk drive. I'm assuming Sharp had plans for extra hardware to connect between the drive and the Disk System hardware.

I actually learned 2 things from this video. I never really payed any attention to my Twin Famicom's disk loading screen. and I had to check the loading screen.. the other thing is that the turbo famicom has cables that are actually long enough to use. I wanted one for a while and that just pushes it from 'want' to 'gotta have' territory.

Depends on the use, I guess. You can still find some that are intact. Yeah, it COMPLETELY depends. As far as I know, the one I have has never been replaced, and it still works fine.

I have a very hard time believing that any HDTV can't go above channel 69; most TVs made in the '90s and later can go up to 125 to support the full analog cable spectrum. Have you seen our Denshimail about how to hook up your Famicom to an HDTV? You may just need a signal that broadcasts at the higher channel, and have your TV scan for it. I'll message you the link. REGARDLESS, the Twin is an excellent choice, though a working one can be expensive. An AV Famicom is also a good option.

That's because the European SNES used the Super Famicom design. I think only North America got the redesigned version. It's something we'll fully research and talk about when we do our Super Famicom/NES video.

@Bolt2600 Nope: it's much too small to fit the plug for the RAM cartridge, and (as we say in the same breath) exists ON the RAM cartridge itself.
@Ace9921
@Ace9921 12 лет назад
It affects my Twin Famicom's operation in Disk System mode. I actually retraced the expansion ports, and they're just cables, one to the motherboard (expansion port C) and one to the disk drive (expansion port D). Like I said, with the cable removed, my Twin Famicom works no problem in cartridge mode, but in disk mode, it thinks there's a disk in the drive, attempts to load a non-existent disk (although the access light is never lit), then gives a battery error.
@Octolicia

Well it makes sense since they need technology to make their product. For example: Sony developped the Super NES sound chip. So in exchange of that, the deal was that Sony could produce a Nintendo CD-ROM console add-on for the Super NES: The Play Station.
@SeanOrange
@SeanOrange 13 лет назад
@chaofreak8 The Famicom 3D System? It plugs into the 3rd controller port in the front (which is too big for the one on the FDS). I coulda sworn we found something once that works with it, but I can't remember.

Come to think of it, I can't really test this because my Twin Famicom's drive has been busted for a while. (Need to repair it, and feel like I should make a video about it!) Thanks for the update. The statement that the US NES 2 only came with RF is incorrect. It's exceedingly rare and expensive to get one now, but they did make some that use the same video cable as the SNES/N64/GameCube much like the AV Famicom. It seems that they only sent these out as replacements to people who complained about the vertical lines and picture quality in general. In addition, they apparently also unloaded their remaining stock at the end of their support lifetime and most of them ended up sold NIB at RadioShack stores in Washington.

Ah, a misunderstanding in the name. The RAM cartridge only holds the data loaded from the disk so that the Famicom doesn't have to constantly read the disk to play the game. (It still does, occasionally, as needed. Although some games are so small they just load once.) Saved data is actually written to the disk itself. Despite being "RAM", the data on that cartridge is more or less "read-only".

I wonder if the hardware may be a bit different with the AN-500B Twin Famicom as compared to the AN-500R (I have an AN-500B model). One thing's for sure: there seems to be no consistency with the audio circuitry. Some AN-500R Twin Famicoms appear to have distorted sound, the on-board FM sound on the disk section is EXTREMELY loud, and my particular Twin Famicom has louder-than-normal FM on the on-board Disk System. The audio is very muffled, too (fixed this by removing a low-pass filter cap).

I've been using Pinnacle Studio 10, mostly because it came free with my video capture device. I got used to it, even though it has a lot of quirky problems and is prone to crashing. I've considered upgrading to version 12, but I could just as readily move to a new, more professional editor. You know, one that has more than two video and audio tracks...

Do you guys recommend getting a Famicom and it's peripherals? Over here in the UK they're a much cheaper alternative to NES's, but I can't read Japanese text so I'm a little on the fence about whether or not it would be worthwhile.

Will the Twin Famicom tune in correctly (since its AV) on a PAL TV?
@SeanOrange
@SeanOrange 7 лет назад
+Akubaru Akub I've heard most PAL TVs can handle an NTSC AV input, but I have no experience to confirm or deny this.
@enginerd80
@enginerd80 7 лет назад
I think that would depend on what era the PAL TV is from. The old CRT-based TV's might have been able to show something, but probably the colors would have been missing and the picture would have been distorted. I didn't use often any NTSC video sources but fiddled with a region-free DVD player's settings sometimes. It was possible to set the player to output everything in PAL, everything in NTSC, or everything in the original format that was used on the disc. On other 2-3 TV's I tried it on, the NTSC was unusable in one way or another, but one of the TV's (a 21-inch Sony from around the year 2000) handled NTSC perfectly. When the video type was switched, the TV went blank for a second, and when the picture came back, the video frequency was actually different, and also the line pitch was different so that the different number of lines would still nicely fill the screen. But that was NOT a common thing; on most TV models thare would have been something left wrong with the picture. The modern flatscreen TV's are a different case. They almost always can double as computer screens, as they have VGA, DVI or HDMI on them, and on computers the video frequency is 60 Hz everywhere. (Though, at least some laptops seem to offer option for 50 Hz when connected to an external screen, but that shouldn't be taken for granted.) Therefore the TV's must have some usable level of support for 60 Hz -- though AV is not usually used for connecting computers, so it's possible that some TV manufacturers have skipped thoroughly testing the AV input with 60 Hz input. But I would say 95~99 % of modern PAL TV's can handle 60 Hz input (including NTSC) just fine (except through the actual TV tuner).
