Everyone saying that this is child abuse should have their head checked. Child abuse is allowing your child to sit in front of a computer/iPad/video game console all day long and fear the outside. These children would’ve learned more in six months then they would six years in school. Teaching your children to succeed, work hard and have fun is never wrong

That. Was. Amazing. My absolute favorite part that made me start crying was when Ben said his favorite part of the entire trip was getting to hear his daughter's heart. That blew my mind thinking about the beautiful scenery they saw, amazing people they met, and even finishing it... yet his favorite part was getting insight into things his daughter cares about. #fatheroftheyear And I also love how you had family meetings and decided things as a group and welcomed input. My family never did that. You gave your kids voices. That was so well edited. I cried. I laughed. There was so much heart in it. And now I want to watch it again. And thank you for showing us the other people finishing too. That was like icing on the cake. You know.... the PCT is not as hard as the AT... I can hear it calling... Please make it a 2 hour video if you do that hike. ❤

IamFrancoisDillinger Here in Ventura, CA., it is regular wear. Patagonia started in one of our old warehouses in the 70s. It was called ThE Great Pacific Iron Works. Bought my first backpacking sleeping bag at their “Garage sale.” $35.00 for -20 degree Camp 7 down sleeping bag. Enough of the stuff can be found used around town. Not a big deal here in Ventura.

*To everyone saying this is child abuse* As an Appalachian native, this trail is somewhat legendary. Every wild-man here sets out to walk it at some point in their lives. At this point, it's basically a ritual. Some people come back from the trail....others do not. I've had friends who have come back in critical condition...and I've had friends who haven't come back at all. That being said, this family took all of the necessary precautions. They went for comfort and safety, not survival (which, with the responsibility of six kids, was definitely the right choice.) They are obviously an active and outdoors-oriented family. If some random man from the suburbs who had never hiked a day in his life decided "yeah imma take my child on this incredibly strenuous and dangerous journey"...that would be a different situation. But, these parents did the proper prep. They put the hours in. At the end of the day, these kids are fine. What's done is done. Who tf cares.

@@garretthikes2034 that's true, but they made many decisions along the way to ensure none of them would get hypothermia. If you watch all of the vlogs, or even read the book they just released, you get a much bigger picture of the different choices they made along the way with regards to their kids safety. It could have been dangerous, but so can a car ride. They all came out stronger in the end.

I get why people are concerned. You mentioned that the family took all the necessary precautions, however, that’s nearly impossible when you are talking about nature. Compile that with human error such as losing the youngest child’s rain pants on day one and the potential for real harm is there. You mentioned yourself that the AT is a very strenuous and dangerous journey (for someone who doesn’t have hiking experience) but in reality it is both of those things for anyone, even seasoned hikers. Add 6 kids to the mix which regardless of your hiking abilities is an added risk times 6. In all reality they very likely could not have done it without all the help they received in the last half. As parents we have to weigh out the benefits of an experience with the potential dangers. They took a calculated risk and very fortunately it worked out. Many parents watching this were obviously aware and concerned. Some overly concerned. To go as far as making hate groups or entire web pages is beyond excessive.

"entire websites were dedicated to hating on us" Get a grip. I thought my parents were tough taking five kids on holiday to Colorado. These two adults are the epitome of dedicated and have to be the best parents I have ever known. CPS should make a video of them for demonstration what 100% commitment looks like. Even as I watch I almost cannot believe it. Had I known this was happening I would have gone ot the trail and cooked/cleaned/whatever I could do to help. Amazing examples of humanity, all eight.

I was taken up glens and mountains across Scotland as a kid, nothing like you've done. My childhood was wonderful, my best memories are the ones when weather was awful and we got to where we were going and we had soup or saw a waterfall or the car brokedown and we had to sit in it, in a storm for hours waiting for assistance. I hated it at the time but looking back it was the best of times. Keep going with the memory making.💖

I’m 13 years old and with four younger siblings (11, 10, 3, 1) I thought we would never be able to adventure on our own again after my stepmother gave birth to the two littles. This gives me hope that we’ll be able to go on hikes and trips like this again. I live and love to see families like this. After all, children are supposed to adventure!

What amazing parents to offer this opportunity of a lifetime to their kids. "Will it be hard, Dad?" "Hell, yeah. But you'll be a better person for it and the journey will shape your life for decades to come." What I love is that (at least from the footage) was that the kids never complained!! (I'm sure they did), but they always had a positive attitude. The people helping along the way with loding, kind words, food, camaraderie makes me believe in America again.

Best part about this video is watching as youngest member of “The Family” is acquiring language. 45 days in his young life is a time of major language development. Too bad he won’t remember the trip, but the rest of those children will have a spectacular adventure to remember for the rest of their lives. To the parents- this is not child abuse. It is making memories for your children to tell their grandchildren. You are amazing parents!

This family sharing their adventures have me beginning my plan to walk or thru hike this 2200 mile track. After fighting cancer over the last 7 months I am back to good health and I want to add this adventure to my bucket list. Thankyou Crawford Family for shearing the ups and downs of your wonderful family adventure that will in time be deeply cherished by your family for a lifetime. It will become a lifelong accomplishment that will ring deeply over the years as one of the most important things that a family can accomplish together. Actually, together is key because family is truly a lifetime endeavor and each memory will strengthen the roots of this wonderful family and offer a better way for each of you to live well, within yourselves. You are truly a adventure family and NEVER allow anyone to kill your dreams. Thanks again for sharing.

I spent a bit buying all new gear along the trail since I had cheap stuff, and I spent a lot of time eating in towns and blowing money on nonsense. To do it without blowing your budget you'd just need to avoid staying in fancy hotels regularly and try to have your gear worked out before starting. Really people called CPS on you for giving your kids the time of their lives? It's not like you had your kids out forging for food instead of bringing food, and planning to do the whole trail with no shelter besides a tent. This is not abuse at all this is parenting done right.

To the haters who called cps shame on them. Call on someone who's actually in need of help dont burden an already overburden system with false reports or unfounded accusations. I wish my parents did this with me when I was a kid! We went camping in the summers usually 3 or 4 times a year and I loved it! Can't wait to take my kids camping this year! Happy trails god bless!

Those moments of struggle, hopelessness, frigid air, being wet and everything else they went through shows their determination and endurance. I am so happy to see you succeed and prove all those haters wrong. I mean... What the heck? I may not always agree with some of your views, but it's your life, these are your kids and you know best what's good for them and what they can handle. Everyone watching these videos for just a minute can tell that they are all very bright, well spoken and adjusted. It's a testimony to your parenting, Ben and Kami. Would a child or a teenager rather hang out at the pool of a motel than hiking through the ice cold smokey mountains? Of course. But in retrospect they all seem to be very proud of what you've accomplished together. So: Bravo! PS: I'll be following in your footsteps starting March, 2!

Prediction: In 30 years people will notice that Rainer never gets sick and has an incredible immune system that fights off every illness. A few years after that, people will finally start putting 2 and 2 together and realize it's because he spent 6 months in the woods as an infant boosting his immune system, thus starting a new trend of parents taking babies on through hikes so much so that every 4th person you see on the trail will have a baby on their back. 20 years after that happens, the country has the healthiest generation it's ever seen.

The boosts to the immune system come from catching bug when you are around groups of people, like in school. When you catch the bug, the immune system builds antibodies. Not sure how being in the woods with the same six people all the time does that.
